Registration due July 9th: bit.ly/2018jeffersoncountystem *Based on school grade completed in Spring 2018*

This class will teach youth about the chemistry behind candy and sports. Did you

know that sports are not just for fun, but also include lots of science? Discover

how our bodies break down foods to power through physical activities, the ways

your body regulates temperature, the science of electrolytes and more!

Participants will also learn about The Sweet Side of Chemistry through hands-on

experiments to discover the chemical properties of candy and what makes

chewing gum so sticky. Participants will experiment with floating letters on

M&M’s and Skittles. Who knew chemistry could be so FUN?

FUNDMENTALS OF

CHEMISTRY Grades 4-8 | July 23

9:00am - 4:00pm

Build a LEGO racecar and design a coding program to complete the racetrack

challenge while learning about the properties of speed. Explore the science of

earthquakes and identify the best building construction to withstand

earthquakes. Participants will do this by building LEGO structures and designing

an earthquake simulation.

FLEx is a mobile learning program for advanced design technology benefiting

students in a 21st century paradigm. Structured around STEM, design thinking

and 21st Century skills, this environment delivers full-scale augmented and virtual

visualization, digital to real prototyping, circuit bending and visual programming.

9:00am - 4:00pm

This class will feature designing and building simple inventions. Youth will learn

how to build simple electronic switches using household materials. These

switches can be connected to a computer using a Makey Makey input device and

programmed for specific tasks. Participants will be challenged to use what they

learn to solve real-world problems.

What comes to your mind when you think of the word energy? Do you think of the

food that powers you through the day? Do you imagine the great big power lines

along the highway? In this class, we will discover the power of light, motion, and

heat energy. Make your own solar oven, explore the nature of sunlight, investigate

water molecules, become a human conductor of electricity and more. This class is

sure to energize your mental power!
