STEM Lit-to-Go encompasses hands-on learning in the STEM field and incorporates fiction and non-fiction reading. Plan and conduct popcorn
experiments. Investigate the physics, including force and motion, of rollercoasters. Examine the properties of UV rays and discover ways to be safe
in the sun. Investigate friction and design their own Super Sled. Explore the fascinating facts of trees and learn about the important roles trees play in our
lives. Discover the power of wind and conduct wind experiments.

This class will teach youth about the chemistry behind candy and sports. Did you
know that sports are not just for fun, but also include lots of science? Discover
how our bodies break down foods to power through physical activities, the ways
your body regulates temperature, the science of electrolytes and more!
Participants will also learn about The Sweet Side of Chemistry through hands-on
experiments to discover the chemical properties of candy and what makes
chewing gum so sticky. Participants will experiment with floating letters on
M&M’s and Skittles. Who knew chemistry could be so FUN?
FUNDMENTALS OF
CHEMISTRY Grades 4-8 | July 23

Build a LEGO racecar and design a coding program to complete the racetrack
challenge while learning about the properties of speed. Explore the science of
earthquakes and identify the best building construction to withstand
earthquakes. Participants will do this by building LEGO structures and designing
an earthquake simulation.
FLEx is a mobile learning program for advanced design technology benefiting
students in a 21st century paradigm. Structured around STEM, design thinking
and 21st Century skills, this environment delivers full-scale augmented and virtual
visualization, digital to real prototyping, circuit bending and visual programming.

Join us to think like a scientist, communicate like an engineer and build like a technician. This class will cover the technicalities of robotic arms, hands and

Do you have what it takes to be a Crime Spy Investigator? In this class, Jefferson
County Law Enforcement will teach the skills necessary to become top detectives
and solve mysteries. Make top secret spy kits, learn how to open and reseal
letters without a trace, discover the secrets behind writing invisible messages,
practice dusting for fingerprints, analyze chemical reactions to identify a mystery
substance, extract DNA, and more!
CRIME SPY SCIENCE Grades 4-8 | July 24
9:00am - 4:00pm
This class will feature designing and building simple inventions. Youth will learn
how to build simple electronic switches using household materials. These
switches can be connected to a computer using a Makey Makey input device and
programmed for specific tasks. Participants will be challenged to use what they
learn to solve real-world problems.
What comes to your mind when you think of the word energy? Do you think of the
food that powers you through the day? Do you imagine the great big power lines
along the highway? In this class, we will discover the power of light, motion, and
heat energy. Make your own solar oven, explore the nature of sunlight, investigate
water molecules, become a human conductor of electricity and more. This class is
sure to energize your mental power!

Participants will learn about how to enjoy the outdoors in a safe manner by
learning basic first aid, identifying harmful plants and pests, and how to prepare
a “Healthy Hike Kit.” We will provide transportation to the Jefferson County Park
to put our learning into action! Youth will also have the chance to expand their
archery knowledge and skills while learning about archery safety.

MATH GAMES:
PROBLEM SOLVED Grades 4-8 | July 25-26

Discover how fun math can be with puzzles, games, tricks and bricks! Can you solve this math riddle?
I am an odd number; take away an alphabet and I become even. What number am I?
Learn about gardening from start to finish. Youth will have the chance to plant and harvest (and even eat) produce from our on-site garden. Plant your own garden to take home and use the tools you gain from
this class to successfully grow your own food!
LEARN, EAT, GROW Grades 4-8| July 25-26
9:00am - 12:30pm
Work directly with Indian Hills Culinary Arts Program Director and current
culinary students to create yummy concoctions in the kitchen! Learn the
basics of being in the kitchen, how to safely use kitchen tools and
equipment, and enjoy the tasting of creations made by the class.
Participants will also become familiar with making icing, how to use
pastry bags and practice the art of cake decorating.
COOKING UP
CREATIONS Grades 4-8 | July 26

Students will learn about higher power rockets powered by engines/motors from D-E-F range, how to design a rocket using rocket design software, how to

Camp Information
It is $10/participant, regardless of how many classes your child attends. This fee includes a t-shirt for every participant!
Lunch is provided for participants every day by the Fairfield CSD Summer Feeding Program.
Please carefully consider the date, time and grade for each camp. *Based on grade completed in Spring 2018* Classes may be half day, full day and/or more than one session. Please consider this when registering for classes.
STEM Lit-to-Go Part 1 and Part 2 are two separate classes covering different material. You may sign up for both sections or just one if you prefer.
