Who are we?

Ø  Jefferson Parish Dept. of Environmental Affairs is the Local Environmental Regulatory Agency.

Ø  We work hand in hand with State and Federal officials to enforce environmental compliance on various issues including: Ø  Stormwater Management Ø Pretreatment (Sewage) Ø Solid Waste Ø Coastal Management

Pre-Inspection

Ø  When plans are submitted for new construction, you are required to fill out an:

Ø  Environmental Affairs Permit Plan Review Form: Ø Project Description Ø Construction type (1-5 acres or >5 acres) Ø Treatment devices (grease trap, septic tank, etc.) Ø BMPs used during construction (silt fence, hay bales,

etc.) Ø  We review and determine if site will require an inspection from

our Stormwater Division.

Guess What…

Ø  We also perform: Ø Complaint Based Construction Site Inspections Ø Random Construction Site Inspections

Inspection Process

Ø  Upon arrival for an inspection we speak with the contractor regarding who we are & why we are there.

Ø  We review project plans, permit information, and stormwater pollution prevention plans.

Ø  Once all paper work has been reviewed, we perform a visual inspection of the entire site.

Ø  When inspection is completed we review any problems found with the contractor and discuss corrective actions that need to be taken.

Ø  If corrective actions are not taken in the allotted amount of time, a court date will be set, and you could be responsible for fines up to $5,000 per violation, per day.

BROOMS TO BASINS

STORM    DRAIN    SAFETY  INFORMATION

• TRAFFIC :    Always  work  in  groups  of  two  or  more.    Since  most  of  the  storm  drains  are  in  the  street,  one  person  should  always  be  watching  for  oncoming  vehicles  while  another  is  marking  drain.

 • There  may  be  hazards  hidden  in  debris  and  leaves  blocking  storm  grates  and  grills.    Never  reach  barehanded  into  storm

grates  or  grills  until  you’ve  used  a  rake,  stick  or  broom  to  survey  the  debris.

• RED  ANTS:    Please  be  careful  when  clearing  storm  drain  grills  and  grates;  sometimes  red  ant  piles  are  hidden  in  the  debris  blocking  the  drain.    If  bitten,  ask  your  team  leader  for  anti-‐itch  medication.

 • SHARPS:    Broken  glass,  sharp  metal  or  used  hypodermic  needles  are  hazards  that  can  be  found  in  front  or  in  the  vicinity  of

storm  drains.    Please  be  careful  handling  glass  and  sharp  objects.    Hypodermic  needles  and  other  medical  waste  should  never  be  handled  by  workers.    Please  notify  your  team  leader  if  you  encounter  these  materials,  so  that  they  can  be  flagged  for  removal  and  proper  disposal  by  Parish  workers.
