MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Bonnie Householder
Our 50th Anniversary Year is going really well, and hope you had an opportunity to see one of our most
fun events of the year – the Retrospective Art Exhibit of our first 50 years has so many wonderful items many
from folks who are no longer with us, but are represented by their artwork provided by those who currently
own the works. It will remain up until May 31. If you have pieces in the exhibit and are not available to pick
them up or do not have a friend who can pick yours up for you, please let either Mary Stock or me know as
soon as possible. With more than 90 pieces in the exhibit, we need to get them all out in a timely manner that
evening so we can set up the June exhibit the next morning.
As you have no doubt heard, JIAA is planning to have a Summer Art Camp for Kids – information is on
our website, and in the current edition of the Golden Islander – the Jekyll Island newspaper. The Brunswick
News did a piece on it a couple weeks ago, and we hope to have enough elementary students who want to
learn some new art techniques.
The photo on the following page is of an exhibit of Athos Menaboni art work in the Georgia Governor’s
mansion currently. If you look closely, you’ll see the two items with red covers – if they look familiar, they
should…the one on the bottom shelf is our program from our February program – A Valentine from Athos
Menaboni and the one on the top shelf is our Gallery Guide from the March Menaboni exhibit. The Gover-
nor’s wife, Mrs. Deal, is an Athos Menaboni admirer. The exhibit also includes first and revised editions of
Menaboni’s Birds, a menu cover (1944) from Rich’s Department Store featuring Cotton Blossoms and Butter-
flies,. Visitors are welcome each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The exhibit
is located in the foyer on the State Floor. If your schedule allows you to spend time in Atlanta this month, be
sure to visit this exhibit in the Governor’s Mansion.
This will be the last Newsletter until the fall, but make no mistake – we will be busy all summer, planning
classes, as well as our remaining two months of programs for our 50th Anniversary in September and October, Continued on page 2…

plus the Merry Artists Show and Sale, which starts the day after Thanksgiving and runs through December. If
you have not already started working on the items you will include for sale, this is a great opportunity to show-
case your arts!
And while we’re not doing anything else, your Board is revisiting how we publicize our events and market
our activities. If you have a PR background and are interested in helping, please let us know. So stay tuned,
and have a great summer!

Athos Menaboni Exhibit in the Georgia Governor’s Mansion
A Note from D. Russell Clayton, Curator of our March 2017 Menaboni exhibit Dear Menaboni Friend, I am excited to let you know the Governor’s Mansion has a new exhibit honoring Athos Menaboni. First Lady Sandra Deal is an admirer of Athos and his work, and she has created a nice tribute to one of Georgia’s most prominent artists. Thank you, Mrs. Deal The exhibit includes first and revised editions of Menaboni’s Birds, a menu cover (1944) from Rich’s Depart-ment Store featuring Cotton Blossoms and Butterflies, and a program and gallery guide from the most recent exhibition at Jekyll Island. Visitors are welcome each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The exhibit is locat-ed in the foyer on the State Floor. I appreciate the Mansion’s chief manager for providing the attached photographs. Take care! Russ

The JIAA Festival Committee of 2018 invites you to summon your creative spirit to produce a graphic
design for marketing your 2018 Arts Festival.
Selection criteria checklist:
● Bold graphic shapes
● Bright colors
● Six color maximum
● Art as the theme
● 16” x 20”
● Vertical Format
The design must be suitable for reproduction on posters, T-shirts and other promotional items to be sold dur-
ing the festival.
Other requirements: All artists must be members in good standing of the JIAA.
Only one entry is allowed per artist. All entries must be the original work of the submitting artist.
The words “JIAA ART FESTIVAL 2018” will be added after design selection is made.
Please note: Bold and graphic designs do better on fabric than small sketchy designs. Watercolors lose
some of their integrity on fabric.
Photographs and paintings will be accepted. Other creative art that the artist feels can express the theme
and advertise the Festival, but is not poster ready, may be submitted as photograph.
Entry process: Deadline for submitting – September 30, 2017
Email a photo of the entry to: [email protected]
Selection process: The Festival committee will review and select the top 5 entries
Representatives of the JIAA Board and the Festival Committee will select the winner and runners-up.
Prizes: 1. Winning entry - $500.
2. First runner-up – Annual Jekyll Parking pass
3. Second runner-up – Annual Jekyll parking pass
The JIAA will retain all rights to the original design without any further compensation to the artist. The
w i n n i n g original artwork will be retained by the JIAA and will not be returned to the artist.
