Jenna Hawkswell: Making Reading Enjoyable

Pamela Lawrence: Ways to Read at HomeSloane Castleman: High-Interest Books

Reading is a fundamental need. As concerned

parents, we are doing our best to help our children become independent readers. You might be asking yourself, what exactly should I be doing?

Making Reading Enjoyable and Successful for your Child

INSTEAD: Be patient and try not to interrupt

the momentum. Remember the three P’s (Pause, Prompt, and Praise). Wait 10-20 seconds to give your child a chance to use

strategies independently. Ask: What would look right? What would sound right?

What would make sense? “Well done! You made it look and sound right!”

DON’T stress! Getting visibly frustrated about resistance will only make matters

worse.

INSTEAD, model how a sentence or paragraph sounds

with good fluency and have the child “echo read” to match your intonation, expression, and phrasing.

Don’t say, “Read faster” or “Read slower”.

INSTEAD, have him or her refer to the Beanie Baby

Strategy bookmark and choose a reading strategy to solve the word. If they are still having trouble, tell them the word so that they don’t lose track of meaning in the story.

Don’t say, “You know that word” or cover the pictures as your child is reading.

INSTEAD, allow your child to choose topics and

books that interest him or her. Mix it up every so often and make it authentic.

Read craft books and do a craft. Read a recipe book and try out a new recipe.

Don’t choose books for your child.

INSTEAD, have an enjoyable book talk with

them. Don’t forget to share your own thoughts and opinions about the book. Why do you think the character acted the way he or she did? What would you do if you were the character in the book? Did this book remind you of anything? Why do you think the author wrote this book?

Don’t quiz your child after reading.

Choose a book you think you will enjoy. Read the second page. Hold up a finger for each word you are not

sure of, or do not know. If there are five or more words you did not

know, you should choose an easier book.

DOES IT MAKE SENSE?
