Implicit/Unconscious Bias in Practice

Anchoring or Anchor Bias - Seeing the case for what it is.

Confirmation Bias - of course that’s true.

“Like Me” Bias - And in some cases not like me bias.

Intersectionality in PracticeAvoid Assumptions.

“People with intellectual disabilities are the victims of sexual assaults at rates more than seven times those for people without disabilities.” (NPR, 2018)

Systemic Concerns.

“In the 2013–14 academic year, 4.2 percent of Colgate’s students were black. According to the university’s records, in that year black male students were accused of 50 percent of the sexual violations reported to the university, and they made up 40 percent of the students formally adjudicated.” (The Atlantic, 2017).

Cultural SensitivityCultural sensitivity is being aware that cultural differences and similarities between people exist without assigning them a value – positive or negative, better or worse, right or wrong.

Integration: People who are at this stage of cultural sensitivity are able to shift easily from one cultural frame of reference to another. They develop empathy for other cultures.

“In general, the more ethnocentric orientations can be seen as ways of avoiding cultural difference, either by denying its existence, by raising defenses against it, or by minimizing its importance. The more ethnorelative worldviews are ways of seeking cultural difference, either by accepting its importance, by adapting perspective to take it into account, or by integrating the whole concept into a definition of identity.”
