jennings county 2 anniversary th edition

A Message from the
President and Executive Director
Happy Anniversary to Us! 2014 was a banner year for Jennings County Community Foundation. The year started with the recognition that the Foundation was reaching a milestone…20 years of serving Jennings County. Twenty years of making a difference in the community we love. Looking back, it seems that the years went by fast. Our community owes a lot to those early pio-neers of the Foundation who had the foresight to recognize the good a community foundation could achieve. The first Board of Directors of the Foundation consisted of John Hall, Lester Tracy, Dan Baugh, Joan Bentz, Cindy Hatfield, Phyllis Amick, Dawn Black, Larry Cunningham, Marie Elsner (Shephard), Barbara King, Doug Pittman, and Vince Rettig. With-out their dedication and hard work there would be no “looking back” celebration today. Thankfully, those earlier community servants established a legacy paving the road for boards of the future and the Foun-dation has benefited from their leadership. Through the years the Foundation has historically been in the forefront of pos-itive change in our community. Early on, examples of some of the ways the Foundation used grants from Lilly Endow-ment include helping the Park Theatre, Vinegar Mill, and the Senior Citizens Center. The Calli Nature Preserve, a jewel in Jennings County, is an area that the Foundation is proud to have played a part in preserving. The Preserve offers such natural beauty to our community. Ways that the Foundation have specifically and positively impacted the Community this year include: Grants— The Foundation awarded this year over $10,000 in grants to 14 different organizations to help them do great things in our community. Scholarships—This was a record year for the number and amount of scholarships awarded to our Jennings High School students. Including the Lilly Scholarship and Snider Scholarships, over $38,000 was given out to 93 deserving students. Partnerships—Jennings County Community Foundation partnered with Hayden Museum to help with the raising of funds for the museum’s expansion; The Historical Society, where the Foundation supported the efforts of the Society to raise funds for $100,000; Ed Whitcomb Monument Group, helping them raise funds to honor our Jennings favorite son, Ed Whitcomb; Airport Days, MUTC, etc. Celebrations—The GALA Event heralds spring like no other fun gathering. Designed to raise awareness about the Foun-dation and to raise funds for the operation of the Foundation, the GALA is always a signature event and this year’s Wild, Wild West event was no exception. Then, this fall the 20th Anniversary Celebration was part fun-focused, part fund-raising, part reminiscing, and was all about honoring those who have done so much for the Foundation. The event brought old friends together around all the good that the Foundation has achieved and offered a challenge to the future for the next 20 years of Foundation emphasis and focus. The year also saw a significant opportunity come to the Foundation by way of the Lilly Challenge. The Lilly Challenge Initiative dared the Foundation to dream big and match $500,000 with newly raised community funds. The Foundation Board of Directors has taken up the 21 month challenge and is busy letting the community know what a grand opportuni-ty exists to give and have donations matched at anywhere from 50% to 100% based on the donation. By the end of 2014 almost half the money has been matched, but a significant challenge remains. This year has been a memorable year. Join us in making 2015 even better! Your gift matters and can still be matched. What better way to celebrate our last 20 years than by “investing” in the next 20 years of what will be an exciting and remarkable future. Help us do more! Don’t miss the fun!

Ways You Can Give... Cash – your donation can be directed toward a specific charity or used at the discretion of
the Foundation.
Through a Bequest – the value of a bequest is not subject to estate taxes.
Life Insurance – your charitable tax deduction would be less the cost of the cash value of
the policy. If you continue to pay annual premiums, these too are tax deductible. The future
benefit to the Foundation would be equal to the face value of the policy.
Charitable Lead Trust – you give your assets to the Foundation for a designated period
of time. Income from the assets is available for grants. After the designated period, the property and trust can be returned to you or your estate. You pay no income or capital
gains tax during the period the Foundation manages the assets.
Stocks and Bonds – you receive a charitable tax deduction equal to the fair market value
of any marketable securities that have appreciated in value since purchased. You pay no
capital gains tax.
Giving
Giving… Why should I give to the
Community Foundation?
The Foundation provides permanence for your
gifts.
The Foundation provides flexibility. Gifts can
be cash, shares of stock, life insurance or real estate.
Gifts to the Foundation can reduce your tax
burden.
The Foundation’s Board, Finance Committee, professional staff and investment managers provide prudent stewardship of donor funds.

Ways to Give 10 Easy Ways to Gift through the Jennings County Community Foundation.
The Foundation provides numerous ways for donors to show their care and
concern for family and friends of Jennings County. Gifts of all sizes are
welcome and needed.
1. While at the funeral home, a memorial gift to an existing fund in honor of
the family or as a memorial provides the family with the endearing gift yet
allows funding to stay in Jennings County to serve other Jennings County
residents.
2. Give to an existing fund or establish a named fund through a gift of cash
or securities.
3. Give an honorary or memorial gift to honor, acknowledge or perpetuate
the name of a friend, relative, family pet, or to award as an honor to a co-
worker or associate.
4. Establish a corporate giving program. Businesses find it advantageous to
use the Foundation as a vehicle for community giving by establishing their
own funds.
5. Set up an annuity, charitable remainder trust or other planned giving in-
struments to suit your financial needs and benefit your favorite charity. This
allows a continual stream of income for the donor and an attractive tax-
break.
6. Transfer an existing private foundation or charitable trust. Administrators
may find it practical and economical to transfer assets to a named fund with-
in the Jennings County Community Foundation, assuring the intent of the
fund in Perpetuity.
7. Give a gift of Life Insurance, creating a major gift at a relatively low cost
to the donor. A tax receipt is issued for the premiums paid by the donor
when the Foundation is named owner and beneficiary of a new or existing
policy.
8. Arrangements can be made to present, as a gift or an award, to co-
workers, an associate, or to honor friends for a specific occasion: 25th or
50th Wedding Anniversary.
9. Include the Foundation in your will or estate plan. A bequest may be for a
specific amount or for the residue or any portion of an estate.
10. Make a pledge over a specific period of time.
