Winter 2016. . . . . . . . .

THIS Sunday, December 11, 1:00 PM at Shore Winds

Annual Christmas Caroling

Put on your best holiday smile while bringing joy into this Holy Season for some very special residents at Shore Winds. Wear something Christmas-sy(but remember it’s warm in there. We will meet all tweens & teens at the nursing home at 1:00 PM and parents may pick up their tween/teen at 2:00 PM. Parents are welcome to stay and sing with us too. The feeling that comes from this is what this season is all about. Any questions call 621-8133.

Please fill out the permission slip below and have your child bring it with them the night of the caroling.

______________________________________________________ Child’s Name ______________________________________________________ Phone Number where you can be reached while activity is taking place ______________________________________________________ Emergency Phone Number and Name of someone other than yourself ______________________________________________________ Medical Insurance Company and Policy Number ______________________________________________________ Doctor’s Name and Phone Number

I have explained to my child the importance of spreading joy to those who can’t get out to see all the holiday decorations or who don’t have family to visit with them. I have shared with my child that the light in the eyes of the residents and the smiles that come when they realize that someone cares is the best gift they can receive.

They have my permission to attend the caroling at Shore Winds Nursing Home on Dec 11, 2016. I will not hold Holy Cross or its agents liable for any injury that may happen while this activity is taking place. My child may be transported to a medical facility in case of an emergency. I understand every attempt will be made to contact me in case of an emergency.

My child understands that behavior needs to be fantastic as we only have an hour to spread the love and hope with song.

Novena de Aguinaldos Tuesday, December 20

and Thursday, December 22 at 7:00 PM

From December 16 through December 24, families usually gather together at night around Nativity scenes to pray and sing carols in the Novena de Aguinaldos. On Christmas Eve, family members and

neighbors gather to eat and dance. Traditional Colombian foods include: ajiaco (a soup with potatoes), turkey, pork or chicken and natilla (a corn-based dessert) and buñuelos. Everyone waits until midnight to wish each other Merry Christmas and to exchange gifts on Christmas Eve.

Traditionally, El Niño Jesus, the Christ Child, is the one who would bring you the gifts. But recently Santa Claus has been introduced as a gift-giver as well. Children get up on Christmas morning and find gifts at the foot of their beds.

Because Christmas Novena are actually 9 days, the Colombian Community will pray the novena in different houses. Fr. George will host two days of novena (December 20 & 22). Come, enjoy and experience the celebration of Christmas novena with the Spanish Community at Holy Cross Church at 7:00 PM during these days.

ATTENTION: Have you lost a ring in church in the last few weeks? It was found in a pew on a Monday morning. Please call Nicky in the parish office to describe it and make arrangements to pick it up.

John the Baptist is truly an intriguing figure of history. He lived differently, and he stood out among the status quo. How do you stand out? What separates you from the crowd? God has created each of us completely unique and with a combination of gifts like no one else. How can you uncover and understand your unique gifts? First, reflect on

what makes you happiest in life. We are happiest when we are using the talents God gave us.

Next, think about what comes naturally to you, whether it is a skill, task, or emotion. Recurring patterns in our behavior and experiences provide clues to our giftedness. Finally, what do other people see in you? The communi-ties we live in, whether it is our family, parish, school, or workplace are filled with people who can provide clues to us by their observations. After these steps, can you say what makes you special? Now, let's start to grow that, lean on it, and stand out in a way that brings glory to God.

Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Can you say what

makes you special?

Holy Cross School is a vital part of our Parish and carries out our mission to teach our young about Christ. I am asking you to consider a gift at Christmas to our school. You might help with one of the following projects.

The first is a donation to our Tuition Aid for Holy Cross School families. We have pretty much used up the money we had for aid this year, but many times during the year family situations change and there is need for extra help.

The second is a donation to the General Operating Budget of the school. Expenses keep rising even though we do our best to keep costs down. Any help we could have here would be a help to the parents and to the school.

The third is a very special project. We are we taking refugee families who are seeking a Catholic Education. We started this project with children that came to us from Mary’s Place, a Refugee Outreach center in Rochester. Under the direction of Mrs. Catherine Dougherty, our first principle, we began with one family. We now have 14 students from 10 different families that have settled recently in the Northwest section of

Rochester. They try to pay a little towards what would be the cost of tuition for their child, but they have very little financial resources. This project is so special and so important that Bishop Salvatore Matano personally donated last year and this year to help these very worthy students. The

cathedral community, from which a number of these students come, also makes a gift each year. We have two people each year donate to this fund. To keep this program going, we need more out-side help. This is a very important and worthy project. The cost of tuition for one child is $4,100 and goes up to $7,935 for a family with 3 children.

Any gift, what every the size, would be a great blessing.

If you wish to give a Christmas gift to any one of these areas of Holy Cross School, just put your gift in an envelope indicating with the name of the project you’d like to support and please include your name and address. Send this envelope to Holy Cross Parish or drop it in the collection. This will help Holy Cross School continue to teach our young ones about the gift of the Christ Child.

Thank you

Father Wheeland

Christmas on Sunday This is something that happens only once every 5 to 11 years that the 25th of December (Christmas) falls on a Sunday. This creates the situation where we celebrate the Holy Day and the Sunday obligation by attending just one Mass. But this can be a challenge to our budgeted income unless everyone uses both envelopes, one

for Sunday and one for Christmas. We budget for both each year and look forward to a special generous Christmas collection of $20,000. We also need the ordinary weekly Sacrificial Offering of $13,625. So please, if you are able, consider giving us a generous Christmas gift along with your regular weekly offering that weekend.
