Scenario Diplomat tweet Strategist tweet Explanation. How to approach a worker who has been loyal to the company for a long time, but lately has been underperforming.

Don't want 2 hurt her feelings, so guess we'll see how this next year goes.

Let's create an improvement plan.. protect the company but give her the chance 2 succeed.

Being assertive and breaking tough news to others is extremely challenging for Diplomat leaders. Diplomats are known for being too often “overly polite and friendly” and initiating change seems impossible. (Rooke & Torber,68). Rather than initiating change, diplomats will choose to ignore it, which inhibits progress for the business. In contrast, Strategists thrive on finding opportunity in things, especially when faced with challenges. They see weaknesses within the company as “discussable and transformable” and seek to find solutions over avoidance (Rooke & Thorton, 71). Therefore, a Strategist in this situation would most likely want to figure out a long term plan in a way that treats the worker ethically but also serves the company in a positive manner.

Scenario Opportunist tweet Diplomat tweet Explanation

New hire experiences tremendous amount of success within first 6 months.

Too bad this guy's success would never have happened without me... looks like I'll put my name on that last project!

This guy is going to rise up the ranks fast... time to suck up now!

When others find success, Opportunist leaders feel threatened. Since Opportunists view others, especially those experience great successful, as “out for themselves,” they would feel out of control with the situation and rather than learn from the person would position themselves in competition with him.(Rooke &

Thorton, 68). The diplomat wouldn't feel threatened, since diplomats like harmony within the group, but will begin to see and treat this person as a superior and make efforts to please him.

Scenario The Opportunist Strategist Explanation

Sales have significantly dipped in the last year due to a soft economy.

Time to cut costs ASAP. No need to go through HR for help. I smell lay-offs! #you're cut

Time 2 do something different. Need to invest in company & focus on local and global trends. #b the change

The opportunist would demonstrate their authority by executing a plan that would benefit themselves and wouldn't seek advice from others. Since Opportunists care more about “personal wins” than the well being of others in the company, so they would likely go with a slash-and- burn approach if financial times got tough. (Rooke & Thorton, 68). They don't avoid calling the shots and will make tough decisions when necessary, making them “good in emergencies Opportunists “see others as objects” and instead of reflecting on his own business practices as the demise of the company, would point fingers.(69). While this mentality may lead to short term gains by cutting costs, it would be risky for the future of the company. The strategist would spend time reflecting and seeking input from others within the team for new solutions to prosper. For Strategists, “business ideas are carried out in a highly collaborative manner.” with this approach, they'd be making an investment in the company and positioning themselves for success. (71). While they may experience short term sacrifice, they'll likely bounce back after

some time, having the support and strength of its workers.

Scenario The Expert The Individualist Explanation

School receives extra Title 1 money and needs to decide the best way to use the extra funding.

Good thing I have the best insight on Title 1 funding... my ideas will rock!

Forget what the organization thinks..this is an opportunity to do something totally new and different.

Determining what is best for the company is something an Expert leader, being a “great individual contributor” would do well. Experts pursue “continuous improvement, efficiency, and perfection” and therefore they would want to contribute their expertise to such a scenario. (70). Rather than hearing from others on the team, they would want to take action and follow their vision. An opportunity to do something new like this would likely excite an Individualist. Being great communicators with others, even those who are not like them, would want to hear the ideas of others, but would likely express their own ideas about doing something very unique and innovative with the money.

Scenario Achiever tweet Strategist tweet Explanation

Was just awarded “Top 10” companies by Forbes magazine.

Top 10! Need to contact promo team and get the word out. This will totally boost sales.

Honored 2 be recognized. Now we can use our success to influence others to do the same.

The achiever would turn this newfound recognition as an opportunity to strengthen their image; since they often “use influence to successfully promote their own company.” Strategists would perceive this recognition as a way to inspire and lead others, as they “Work to create ethical principles and practices beyond the interests of herself and her organization.” (72). For example, a Strategist may see their success as a way to promote the principles that

may help other companies develop their own principle and ethical business practices. They might also use their influence to sponsor local events or other community fundraisers.

Scenario Achiever Alchemist Explanation

City where company is located is experiencing abandonment as many people are fleeing to the suburbs.

We can't run the way we used to...there's no solution. #time2go

Times like these call for real change. It takes a village, and we're ready to lead it. #inspire

While achievers are “action and goal-oriented” it is also tough for them to “think outside of the box.” This would especially be difficult if all of their surroundings were changing. (70). The Alchemist would see the same situation as indicative of time for “reinvention.” In doing so, they would deal with the new challenges of a declining clientele and figure out ways to connect with what is left as well as bring new people in. They would seek a “societal transformation” and realize the solution is bigger than themselves. (69).
