This is a fictional narrative that
presents a sequence of events.
What is a Short Story?
The methods a writer uses to develop
characters.
What is Characterization?
The problem in the story, or the struggle
between two opposing forces.
What is Conflict?
Major events that develop the plot and lead to the climax.
What is Rising Action?
Events after the climax but before the
resolution.
What is Falling Action?
This is a word that describes or modifies verbs; the suffix –ly is
often added to the word.
What are Adverbs?
This is the main message of a story.
What is Theme?
This is imaginative language, such as
metaphors and similes, that is not
meant to be interpreted literally.
What is Figurative Language?
Words that describe nouns.
What are Adjectives?
These words take the place of nouns.
What are Pronouns?
The past tense of this verb is formed by adding –d or -ed.
What are Regular Verbs?
This part of a sentence contains a verb and tells what the subject is doing.
What is the Predicate?
The past tense of this verb is formed in
different ways than by adding –d or -ed.
What are Irregular Verbs?
This is the part of the sentence that is a
noun or pronoun that the sentence is
about. (Answers who or what the sentence
is about)
What is the Subject?
This is used in a list to indicate that
similar words could follow.
What is Etc.?
This is the type of personal pronoun
that uses I and We.
What are First Person Pronouns?
Type of personal pronoun that uses
you.
What is Second Person Pronoun?
This is the type of personal pronoun
that uses he, she, it, they, and them.
What are Third Person Pronouns?
This has three characteristics:
begins with a capital letter, includes an
end mark, and contains a subject
and predicate.
What is a Complete Sentence?
A group of words with only one subject and
a predicate that contains a complete
thought.
