Is it just me or does it seem like the summer is zooming right past us? For most of us, our kids just got out of school at the end of June (stupid snow days) and there it is… July, already.

We’ve had so much fun working on the July issue and we’re really excited about it. It may be no surprise, but July at the Jersey Shore is jam-packed with lots of family friendly activities. In fact, the Jersey Shore Family Calendar that starts on page 8 is by far the biggest we’ve ever compiled. We had to group reoccurring events by day just so we could try to fit in as much as we could (and we still had to leave some events out). If you haven’t yet, join us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/JerseyShoreFamily and we’ll try to post extra stuff that we couldn’t fit in this month.

We had a lot of fun working on the feature article this month “A Day at the Beach” on pages 18 and 19. In addition to some must-have beach items, be sure to check out the summer snack ideas with some great alternatives to the junk food that we all grab for the kids when we’re in a hurry.

Also, a special thanks to AtlantiCare for providing us with the Summer of Family Fun article on pages 22 and 23. There are a lot of great ideas here for keeping you and your family safe this summer.

I hope you enjoy the July issue of Jersey Shore Family and thanks again for your kind words from our June issue. Keep telling your friends about us and don’t forget to tell our advertisers and events that you saw them in our publication.

Yours,

Matt Griffith

editor’s noteThe Forth of July is historically a celebration of

our independence. A holiday unique to our country. A time for us to celebrate our great nation but, for many of us, The Forth of July is synonymous with fireworks.

I hate fireworks. oK, so I don’t hate fireworks. They are pretty to

look at—a nice distraction maybe, but not something to base a day’s worth of planning around. They are like whipped cream without the red and blue Jello.

I would give up on the holiday entirely, but I feel obligated to create Forth of July, fireworks-related memories for my kids—but I can’t bring myself to make the Jello.

I remember a time when the Fourth of July was as big as halloween or Christmas. Well, not quite. But it was a full fledged holiday, a celebration of our independence, with parades, traditions, food, family, parties, excitement, and anticipation of the grand event—FIReWoRKS!

I remember actually counting down the days to the big celebration. Much of the excitement was owed to the yearly traditions my family practiced. I remember big family cook-outs at my grandparent’s house which included watermelon wedges, too much food, and a huge selection of garishly decorated desserts.

And Sparklers. Glorious, dangerous, glowing, beautiful, bright, scary sparklers.

Sparklers. The kiddy version of the grown-up firecrackers that my grandfather secretly—and I guess illegally—purchased each year. As we waited for the professional fireworks display to commence, my grandfather and a few other male relatives would gather in the yard and ban women and children from coming within 10 feet of their foolishness. The men would laugh like school boys waiting for the next bang to erupt, while my grandma told stories of the little boy who blew his hand off by picking up a firecracker. It was exciting, scary, and wonderful all at once.

As an adult, the Forth of July has lost all of its magic for me. Although everything is always brighter, more vibrant, more intense in childhood memories, I have lost more than just a child’s perception of the holiday.

For me, family traditions have died off and the purpose of the celebration all but lost. only the fireworks remain. There are no more family cook-outs, garish desserts, illegal firecrackers, and I haven’t seen a sparkler in ages. every year I search for an excuse to put the kids to bed early, turn on the Tv and ignore the soft pops and booms of the distant fireworks. After all, that’s what they are right? Soft echoes of a distant memory. A fading puff of whipped cream in an empty Jello-less bowl.

I’m not sure what any parent can do to try to recreate happy childhood memories for their own children. But I feel responsible to at least try to give my kids some of the same great experiences I had as a child.

of course, the 4th of July memories I cherish have very little to do with fireworks. The fireworks were just a colorful decoration on top of a big-old bowl of family traditions and love, sprinkled with a dash of American pride.

So this year, maybe we’ll stay home and watch the Richland fireworks from our own backyard. We’ll avoid the crowds and have a nice, quite, family cook-out with too much food. I’ll invite my mother to tell the kids stories about our ancestors who fought at valley Forge. We can play music, sing corny, patriotic songs, and make really bad desserts. Traditions have to start somewhere, right?

Anybody know where I can pick-up a big box of sparklers?

* If your family has a really great 4th of July tradition or if you have a new way to celebrate our nation’s independence please let us know. Join us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/JerseyShoreFamily

A Day At The BeachWe all know, sometimes a day at the beach

with kids can be no “Day at the Beach.” A beautiful, fun-filled, family outing by the

seaside can quickly turn to mass chaos if just a few necessary items are forgotten, lost, or ruined by the sand we all love to hate.

As fellow beach lovers we’re sure you’re constantly on the hunt for new products to make those family beach trips less painful. Check out a few of our favorite family friendly beach products... and ask yourself “What will they think of next?”

Sun Smarties Family Beach Cabana TentBetter than an umbrella, easier to set up than a traditional beach tent, this light weight, but sturdy shelter from the sun provides UPF 50+ protection and blocks 98% of dangerous rays. This gem is exactly what you need to protect all that precious baby skin. It’s super easy to set up but a bit difficult to pack up alone without

practice. Zipperd flaps roll up and down to adjust shade for napping or privacy. Twists into an easy to carry 25” matching mesh bag. Overall it’s the best of it’s kind and at $79 it’s more than worth the price.

Available at OneStepAhead.com

Radio Flyer Odyssey Ultimate Comfort WagonTruly the Cadilac of wagons, this is the most versatile wagon on the market. Flip & fold seats, padded cushions, seatbelts, and tons of storage are just a few of the perks. The UV canopy added a tent-like feel to the ride that the kids loved. Easy to pull and extra wide wheels make this a must have for beach trips.Available at most stores where toys are sold ($160-$180) by RadioFlyer

Almost perfect, this cart holds up to 4 chairs, a mid-sized cooler, sand toys, and the kitchen sink. But, it’s thin wheels making it difficult to pull over soft sand—difficult, but not impossible, overall, still a good find. ($49-$59)

A Day At The Beach

It’s a cooler... it’s a docking station... Wait, and it’s solar powered too? Finally a solution to dead cell phones and warm beverages at the beach. Too good to be true? Maybe. It’s a bit cumbersome, it doesn’t keep things ice cold, and it’s a tad pricey. But hey, it’s solar powered and so cool.

Picnic Plus Cooladio Solar Cooler

An umbrella holder AND beach table all in one. These hand-made, light-weight, self contained and sturdy, a must-have for beach umbrella lovers.

Available at beachtable.com ($22.50-$30)

The Beach Table

Available at Amazon.com ($85-$66)

Perfection! This large (7’ x 7’) blanket made from strong parachute nylon has sand pockets to keep it in place. Sand resistant, quick to dry, machine washable, weighs less than 1 pound and it folds into a built in stuff-stack. Gotta love it!

Preparing summer snacks for their children, may seem a daunting task for many parents. Not because snacks are difficult to make, but because good snacks must be nutritious, healthy and most importantly, attractive. Getting a snack to contain this trifecta is not easy.

Add the summer season and days at the beach, pool, or lake, where ice cream and other less nutritious foods seem abundant, and the challenge grows exponentially.

Some planning, healthy-living tips, and kid friendly recipes, can help your family on their way to healthy summer eating.

Dips can be the 'go to' food when trying to get your kids to eat healthy. A yogurt based dip is easy to make and versatile. Add paprika, garlic powder and fresh herbs to yogurt to make a nice vegetable dip. For a fruit dip, add honey and cinnamon to yogurt. You can add the fruit directly to the yogurt and have the whole thing as a snack. Add salsa and low fat shredded cheese to plain yogurt and eat with multi-grain tortilla chips or multi-grain pita chips.

Yogurt is a great choice for the beach—the container is already chosen for you. Plus yogurt, in general, travels and holds well in a cooler.

More beach friendly snacks:Combine crackers, almonds, dried cranberries • or raisins for a beach friendly trail mix. Plain air-popped popcorn sprinkled with • cheese is a healthy alternative to chips. Fruit and cheese kabobs: alternate cubes of • cheese and chunks of apples on a skewer for a fun snack on the go.Fruit wands: alternate apples, pears, • pineapples, grapes or any other fruits you like on skewers for a sweet treat.Instead of using mayonnaise for sandwiches, • substitute hummus. It tastes good with ham, turkey, and roast beef and hummus can with-stand the heat of the sun better than mayonnaise and is less risky when it comes to spoilage. All of these snacks can be put in Ziploc bags and will travel well in either a cooler or an insulated bag.

Where’s the party?

Imagine a place where kids can go to have hours of safe, energetic fun, without running out of tokens or fighting over the best toys, and without ever getting bored.

Now, imagine being able to actually enjoy you child’s birthday. No planning. No cooking. No entertaining. No clean up! Just a few hours to actually have fun with your guests and watch your little birthday boy or girl have a great time.

Sound to good to be true? Sandra May, owner of BounceU, located on Delilah Road in Pleasantville, invites you to come in and see for yourself.

The main facility encompass over 10,000 square feet and includes 2 bounce rooms and 2 party rooms. Although BounceU is open to the public and has many “Open Bounce” opportunities there is nothing like a BounceU Birthday Party.

After years of planning birthday

parties for her own children, Sandra May,

owner of BounceU in Pleasantville, decided to bring the ultimate stress-free party venue to Atlantic County. She

opened the doors to the Pleasantville facility in

2007 and has been helping busy parents plan perfect parties

ever since.“The parents can just show up with the

guest of honor and sit back and have the party pros take over,” says May. “They can have time to mingle and enjoy their family and friends without having to worry about the prep work and the clean up.”

“All of the equipment is big enough for adults to participate and play along,” says May. “So parent’s can actually get in on the fun.”

Birthday packages are available for almost any budget and start at just $149 for the new Val-U Private Birthday Party Package for smaller groups. Parties include at least an hour of private playtime in both bounce stadiums and at least 30 minutes of private party room time, but packages can be upgraded to fit your needs.

One of the best thing about BounceU Parties is their overall effect on the guests. After over an hour of non-stop bouncing, playing, boxing, running, jumping and screaming, even big kids are ready for some rest.

“There is nothing better than seeing the looks on their faces when they first arrive,” says May. “And nothing beats leaving with the feeling that your big day has been a truly special event.”

Incredible kids’ birthday parties are only the beginning at BounceU. From Programs and classes, to fund raisers and team parties, BounceU can host just about any group that wants to get its bounce on.

Did you know bouncing is a great form of stimulation for children with sensory disorders. At BounceU, children can get a fun-filled workout, bounce and socialize with other families in a supportive environment during our Sensory Rebound sessions. A special Sensory Rebound session for children with Autism and their families is held the first Tuesday of every month a from 6:10 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

If you can’t wait until your next BounceU party or if you just want to come in and see what all the fuss is about, call to reserve a spot at one of the popular Open Bounce sessions or join the fun on Family Bounce Night every Wednesday from 5 pm - 8 pm.

There is still time to sign up for the Create and Bounce Summer Camp. The unique, upbeat Create and Bounce program gives kids a daily balance of playtime and creative time – the perfect combination for any aspiring artist.

Kids Invited To Dive Into Summer Reading

Summer break offers kids time to enjoy the things they like without the constant challenges of school projects and assignments. That does not mean learning has to also take a break. Summer reading helps kids maintain and build their vocabularies, but simply telling kids to read or do vocabulary exercises often doesn’t work.

Finding programs to keep your kids active in learning and stimulated throughout the summer has never been easier. The Atlantic County Library system has so many programs and workshops available this summer that every child can’t help but find at least a few that appeal to their own unique set of interests.

Over 300 events are planned this summer at the Atlantic County Library System. This year’s Summer Reading theme is “Make A Splash.” The program includes all things water related. There are great activities planned: water games, pizza parties, movies: there’s lots to do at the library. There are programs on everything from swimming and beach fun to sailing and piracy to gardening and ecology. Kids are invited to enjoy story times, crafts, special performers, and even hermit crab races!

Plus, kids can win prizes just for reading! Registration is required for some programs and schedules and offering vary by library branch. (See the Jersey Shore Family Calendar on pages 8 and 9 for a sampling of events listed by days of the week.)

It’s easy to register for the Summer Reading Program. Stop by your favorite branch of the library to sign up and get in on the excitement. Kids keep track of every book they read. The more books they read the more times they can enter for fun prizes.

Backyard AND Beach Fun

10 Piece Water Park Starter SetThe Water Park was a huge hit on Brigantine beach. We’ve

never seen a toy attracted so much attention. Not only did it keep our Jersey Shore kids busy for hours, but there was actually a line of beach buddies lined up for their chance to build the next mini-water park.

The double-sided shovel was by all reports one of the best sand shovels of all time. Capable of digging huge holes by even the the 3 year olds. It’s lightweight, has a sturdy aluminum handle and the perfect size for little hands.

The set can also be used for backyard play and worked well with both sandboxes and rock-piles. Children used along with toy trucks and constructed a mini-construction site!

We liked the versatility and were please to find a toy that inspires creativity and proved to be a great tool for teaching cause and effect and fostered learning through play, a trait rarely found in many of today’s popular toys.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Recommended for ages 3 and up–but we found the individual track pieces were large enough for toddlers to play with and they actually turned out to be great stacking toys for the little guys. Designed by HABA® of Germany. Available at www.MagicCabin.com ($79.98)
