Toms River Set for Rivalry ClashTOMS RIVER— The 2012 season has seen both the Toms River North and Toms River East football teams get better as the season has gone on. Now everyone will get to see who has improved the most when they face each other on Thanksgiving weekend. TR North returned to the postseason in the South Jersey Group V bracket after a 5-4 campaign, which included some big wins. The Mariners lost 41-38 to Eastern in the opening round of the playoffs, but were very competitive with the 2nd seed. Eastern only took the lead for good in the final two minutes on a touchdown run by Tom Flacco, the younger brother of Baltimore Ravens quarterback, Joe Flacco. TR North quarterback, Carmen Sclafini, rushed for two scores and threw for another in the effort. The Mariners also have some key players in wide received, Joey Fields, and their strong-legged kicker, Chris Gulla, who can hit field goals from 40+ yards.

Toms River East is 2-7 on the season, but they are fresh off a 63-24 pounding of Woodrow Wilson in

a NJSIAA consolation game. Junior running back, Matt Gudzak, is the force behind the Raiders’ ground game. He has carried for over 800 yards on the year and had seven touchdowns prior to last week. Jerry Caporale also sees significant time in the backfield and has rushed for nearly 500 yards with four scores. Senior linebacker, Patrick Gallagher, leads the defense in tackles and also has a team-high five sacks.

“It’s big playing any of our sister schools, but espsecially North. That’s a special game for our players, especially our seniors,” says TR East coach, Charles Diskin. “We always talk to the kids about how you’re always going to remember the last game so play every play like it’s your last because at some point, it is. Getting the win last week was big for us so hopefully we can just keep it rolling.”

Prediction: TR North 31 - TR East 20

Watching the Monmouth Falcons run through the Highland park team like a knife through butter, with a final score of 47 to 8, I wondered if Coach Morrell of the now 2 and 7 Falcons would rather end the season on clearly a winning note or play the upcoming traditional Thanksgiving game against Ocean, a perennial power-house playoff team, a team that Monmouth has only beaten once in the last fifteen years. Ocean is a team that is fighting in the playoffs this year. Monmouth is a small program on the rise, but it competes in the toughest division in the Shore Conference and, therefore, it hasn’t seen a winning re-cord in some time. It also hasn’t beaten the Ocean Spartans in recent memory. So why keep playing the Thanksgiving game?

I asked the coach and this is what he said,” The Thanksgiving game isn’t just a game. It is much bigger than that. First, it sym-bolizes tradition. It is a time when alumni, family and friends gather together to say hello and it kind of kicks off the holi-day season. Then there is the rivalry. We

haven’t won in a long time, but my seniors go into ev-ery Thanks-giving game p r e p a r e d to give one h u n d r e d and ten per-cent to beat Ocean and, win or lose, each year they leave everything on the field. Even if we were playing a state game the following week, I would not change a thing. For my boys this is like their Super Bowl.”I spoke with the four senior team captains, Sheldon McCue, Jeff Farrah, Lydell Wil-son and Alec Gaurino. I asked them if they would rather end the season on a win-ning note or play the tough Ocean team on Thanksgiving. Each one echoed the other. “This is the game we wait for, this is the rivalry, and this is the one game we have to play. Our chances of winning don’t matter. All our friends will be there and every year we believe we have a chance to win. Who knows, this could be our year!”

They believe it and they would be heart-broken if the Thanksgiving game tradition ended. There is something to be said for this tradition, and if it gets in the way of few teams chasing a state title, so be it. The Monmouth Falcon team believes in Thanksgiving football and who knows, maybe it is their year!Score: Monmouth Falcons-27 - Ocean Spartans -24

The Matawan football team will travel to St. John Vianney on November 24th hoping to avenge last year’s 35-8 loss against the Lancers.

Matawan came into this season with high expectations under first-year head coach, John Kaye, after stunning Rumson-Fair Haven (3-0) in last year’s Central Jersey Group II championship game.

The Huskies started off this season with a bang by winning their first three games against Bishop Ahr, Freehold Boro and Ocean Township.

After a tough loss against Neptune, the Huskies rebounded with hard fought wins against Wall and RBR before suffering a heart breaking 24-21 loss against Long Branch. After a tie against New Brunswick because New Brunswick couldn’t field a competitive team due to super storm Sandy, Matawan had a rematch with Long Branch on November 16th in an NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III first round game. The Huskies ended up losing 26-3 to fall to 5-3-1 on the season.

Key players to keep an eye on for Matawan are cornerback/quarterback, Kashaun Barnes; halfback/middle linebacker, Dan Incle; halfback/weakside linebacker, John Alston; placekicker/punter, Mike Creamer; and running back/strong safety, Glenn Cross.

The Lancers will rely on quarterback, Billy DeMato, and wide receiver, Ishmael Hyman. DeMato’s top performance this season was when he threw for over 300 yards and six touchdowns in a come-from-behind 39-35 win against Manasquan earlier in the season. Hyman is considered to be one of the top wide receivers in the state and has received several scholarship offers. Other players to watch for the Lancers are defensive ends, Justin Gille and Chris Green, and outside linebacker/running back, Chris Colapinto. The Lancers defense will be without Clay Kemp, who had to have season-ending surgery for a broken left hand suffered during a thrilling 19-13 overtime win against Raritan.

SJV ended up losing to powerhouse Delbarton, 55-14, in the first round of the Non-Public III playoffs. DeMato entered that game as the top quarterback in the Shore Conference with 1,860 passing yards and 17 touchdown passes. The Lancers overall record now stands at 5-4 and they will be looking to end their season on a high note with a win over the Huskies.

POINT PLEASANT BEACH – Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day game between Shore Regional and Point Pleasant Beach has a little more at stake this year than just bragging rights. The Shore Conference Class B Central crown will be awarded to the winner, and for the Gulls this has added significance.

The last time they won a Central Jersey Group 1 title was in 1949, when the NJSIAA used to award titles before the playoffs were created. Last year the Gulls won their first playoff game since reaching the finals in 1982, and they also won their first Thanksgiving Day game since 1996 defeating Shore 14-12.

This is the third year of the current Shore-Point Pleasant Beach Thanksgiving Day game match up, with each team winning one game, and if the playoffs go as expected, these two teams could meet again in the Central Jersey Group 1 finals.

The Garnett Gulls, 9-0, and ranked sixth in the Shore Conference, trounced South River 44-6 Friday night in first round playoff action and will face Florence (8-1), the West Jersey Football Leagues Liberty Division Champions this weekend.

Shore, 8-1, and ranked tenth in the Shore Conference, demolished division rival Keansburg 48-12 Friday night in their first round playoff action and will face conference foe Asbury Park (6-2-1) this weekend in a rematch of an early season game won by Shore 37-12.

Shore runs a wing tee offense and possesses multiple running threats. Seniors Jack Kelly (108-765-10TD), Mark Costantino (62-520- 12 TTD), Kevin Masica (37-285-7TD) and junior Brian Miller (29-244-3TD) can all carry the load when called upon. Junior QB, Matthew Muh (37-87-721-19TD), and senior wide out,

Tyler Vivian (11-223- 4TD), pose a threat to score from anywhere on the field when opponents attempt to take away the run.

Defensively, the Blue Devils are led up-front by senior DE, Louis Bernardes (3.5 Sacks 2 FF), junior DT Matthew Proto (2.5 sacks, 1 FF), and Dennis Vaccaro (2 sacks, 1 FR, and INT for TD). Junior OLB, Connor Rogers (2 FF, 2 INT), and senior MLB, Dan Bellie, man the middle. Senior DB’s, Tyler Vivian and Derek Joyce, each have 1 interception, while Masica (1INT) and Costantino (1INT) pull double duty in the backfield.

As a team the Blue Devil defense has given up a total of 89 points on the season for an average of 9.9 P/G, first in the Class B Central Division.

Point Pleasant Beach also runs the wing tee offense and has multiple running threats, and like Shore, has a quarterback that will hurt you if concentrate on the run.

Offensively the Gulls boast the Shore Conference leading rusher in senior Danny Tighe (92-1441-21TD), who averages an incredible 15.7 yards per carry. He is joined in the backfield by senior, Kyle Samaritano (62-795-13TD), also with an amazing per carry average of 12.8. And last but not least, rounding out this three prong attack is senior, Andre Cochran (80-693-9). With the rushing statistics these guys have compiled, I hope they take their offensive linemen out to dinner once in a while!

Sophomore quarterback, Jake Fioretti (25-45-565-10TD), has shown the poise of a veteran and has the ability to put the ball in the air for a quick strike as he did Friday night, hitting junior Noah Yates for a 50 yard bomb. Yates and junior TE, Bill Barry (6-190-4TD), are his favorite targets.

Defensively, Point Pleasant Beach is spearheaded by senior DE, Lucas Jordy, third in the Shore Conference with eight sacks to go along with his 38 Tackles. Senior ML, Quinn Kusma, leads the team in tackles with 40 and has accumulated five sacks. Cochran goes both ways and at DE he has contributed 37 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Barry OLB (24 T, 1.5 S), Tighe CB (2 INT) and Yates FS (2 INT) also play defense, and play it exceptionally well.

As a team the Gulls defense has surrendered 107 points on the season for an average of 11.9 P/G, second to Shore in the Class B Central Division.

Kickoff for the Thanksgiving Day game is 10:30 AM @ Point Pleasant Beach.

Prediction: Point Beach 24 - Shore 20

Long Branch High School and Red Bank Re-gional will renew one of the oldest Thanksgiv-ing Day high school football rivalries when they meet for the 90th time. Long Branch leads the series 57-29-3 and won the game last season by the score of 19 to 7. The Green Wave (8-1) are having a very successful season and, after winning their first round game of the NJ-SIAA Group III playoffs, they are now in the semifinals. In the first round, they defeated Matawan by the score of 26 to 3 and have now won 6 games in a row. Red Bank Regional has a 3-5 record, but they have won 3 of their last

4 games including an upset over the number 7 ranked Neptune Fliers (7-2) by the score of 21 to 19. Long Branch is having a great season and has won 6 games in a row. Their latest victory was in the first round of the NJSIAA Group III Play-offs against Matawan with the Green Wave winning 26 to 3. Quarterback, Avery Griffen, ran for a touchdown and threw for a touch-down. Griffen scored on a 68 yard bootleg run and also threw a 35 yard touchdown pass to Deon Williams. Defensive end, Hunter Bruce, put the game away early in the fourth quarter when returned an interception for a touchdown making the score 26 to 3 and securing the game for the Green Wave. Long Branch also got a lift with the return of Dwight Clarke from in-jury. Clarke has missed the entire season with an ankle injury and rushed for 20 yards on 8 carries. The last two seasons he has rushed for over 1000 yards. Red Bank Regional has also been playing well lately winning 3 of their last 4 games, which includes the 21 to 19 upset over Neptune. In their last two games the Buccs have recorded shutouts. They defeated Freehold Boro by the score of 21 to 0. Quarterback, Ross Gisondi, rushed for 37 yards and a touchdown and also

threw for a touchdown. Red Bank Regional also shutout Barnegat by the score of 13 to 0. Tahji Tomaino scored on a 4 yard touchdown run while Jahimere Hinton also had a 37 yard touchdown run. With these two teams playing their best foot-ball of the season, the 90th edition of this ri-valry should be a great game. Even though the Buccs should make the game close I still think the Green Wave has too much offense for the Buccs especially with the return of Clake. I see Red Bank Regional keeping it close, but Long Branch will prevail by the score of 17 to 13.

By Michael RogersLONG BRANCH — The LongBranch high school footballteam started this season by los-ing their first five games.Rather than giving up, theGreen Wave kept playing hardand has now won four straightgames. Red Bank Regional(RBR) had high expectationsfor this season as well and haveworked their way to a 5- 4record against an extremelytough schedule. The two teamswill renew their ThanksgivingDay rivalry at Long BranchHigh School.

Long Branch is really playingwell coming into this game andeven though they are 5-4 on the

season, they have been in somereally close games. In their lastgame, the Green Wave dominat-ed Hightstown by the score of41- 14 and before that LongBranch easily defeated Raritanby the score of 38 - 7. Runningback Dwight Clark has rushedfor over 1500 yards this seasonand has scored 13 touchdowns.Joscil Jackson has also beenproductive this season scoringsix touchdowns and rushing for432 yards. He ran for 110 yardsin the win over Raritan .Quarterback Avery Griffin hasrun the offense efficiently, rushing for 269

Wall-Squan Clash on Thanksgiving

By Kevin Davis

Manasquan (4-5) and Wall (2-6-1) will each look to end their respective sea-sons on a positive note at the expense of a rival when the schools meet at Manasquan High School for their an-nual Thanksgiving Day rivalry game.

Wall prevailed in last year’s game, 16-6. The Crimson Knights were led by then-senior tailback, Jim Guiliano, who rushed for 89 yards and a touch-down on 19 carries, and then-senior kicker, Tyler Block, who accounted for ten points with three field goals and an extra point. Wall also stifled the Big Blue offense, keeping a Manasquan offense that lost then-starting quarter-back, Tyler Saito, to injury in the third quarter of the scoreboard until late in the fourth quarter, when then-senior running back, Kodie McNamara, found the end zone.

After a period of dominance by Manasquan from 2005 to 2008, the winner of the Thanksgiving game has alternated, with Wall claiming wins in 2009’s game, as well as last year’s, and the Warriors victorious in the 2010 meeting. Those alternating victories have coincided with the location of the game -- a road team has not won in the series since Manasquan in 2007. With this year’s game in Manasquan, Wall will not only be looking to buck that trend, but another one that has devel-oped this season – the Crimson Knights are winless in five 2012 road games.

“It’s one of those games -- like Army-Navy,” said Manasquan head coach Jay Price of the upcoming meeting. “Both teams want to win their final game. You throw the records out the door and have at it.”

TOMS RIVER— The oldest Thanksgiving Day rivalry in the Shore Conference had lost a little luster over the past few years in the eyes of some fans. With both Lakewood and Toms River South struggling to win even a few regular season games and far from reaching the postseason, interest in the matchup had waned. This year, thanks to revivals at both programs, the contest is a must-watch. Both Lakewood and Toms River South qualified for the playoffs after strong regular seasons.

The Piners made their first playoff appearance since 2002 and earned the 5th seed in the Central Jersey Group III bracket. They faced defending sectional champion Neptune in the opening round, but lost a tight 14-7 game. Senior Marquise Oliver scored Lakewood’s touchdown on a 59-yard interception return. Neptune held down the Lakewood offense and keyed on quarterback, Tyrice Beverette. Keep an eye on Beverette against TR South

because he can make big, highlight reel plays.

“It’s the longest rivalry in the Shore Conference and me being a Lakewood person it means a lot,” explains Piners coach L.J. Clark. “As a player I never beat them on Thanksgiving. Our players know that and they want to go out on a winning note. TR South is a very good team this year and they’ve got a rich tradition so a win would mean a lot.”

The Indians also returned to the postseason for the first time since 2006. They lost 45-31 to undefeated Lacey, but the game was tied 31-31 with just over two minutes left in the fourth quarter. Junior, Otis Kearney, scored three times out of the backfield to pace the TR South offense. The loss dropped the Indians to 4-5 overall so they will be looking for a win to finish the season at .500.

M A R L B O R O — As the second ranked team in the Shore Conference, Manalapan probably views this year’s T h a n k s g i v i n g weekend contest with Marlboro as little more than an annoyance. The Braves have owned the series in recent years and are currently focused on the Central Jersey Group V playoffs. Manalapan is top seed in the bracket and moved to 9-0 after defeating Monroe 39-7 last Friday. It is a season of unfinished business to attend to after the Braves lost in the CJ Group IV final last year.

Leading rusher Tyler Leonetti and top wide receiver Saeed Blacknall were tied for the team lead in touchdowns with 11 apiece heading into the Monroe game. Leonetti will eclipse 1,000 rushing yards on the season against Marlboro. Blacknall had seven receiving touchdowns heading into last weekend. Fellow wide receiver senior Anthony Firkser had six scores and led the team in receiving yards with nearly 650 on the season. Quarterback Mike Isabella has been more than

steady with 17 touchdowns and over 1,400 yards through the air. Defensively, Manalapan is led by senior, John Appice, who has 9.5 sacks and defensive back, Matt McCann, returned an interception for a touchdown against Monroe.

Marlboro will be a heavy underdog but they are improved from last season. The Mustangs are 4-6 overall with their most recent win in late October, a 21-7 victory over Perth Amboy. They have played hard for head coach, Derek Sininsky, and hope to keep this game interesting into the second half. The offense struggles with consistency, but the defense can be strong led by Thomas Vetrano who leads the team with 4.5 sacks.

Prediction: Manalapan 34 - Marlboro 7

J A C K S O N — Since the school opened in 2006, Jackson Liberty has been in the shadow over its older crosstown rival Jackson Memorial. But things are changing on the gridiron. For the first time in school history Jackson Liberty qualified for the playoffs and clinched their first winning season with a 6-3 record heading into Thanksgiving weekend. Meanwhile, Jackson Memorial enters the game with a 2-7 record, but looking to prove they still have what it takes to topple their rival.

Liberty may be disappointed after last week’s 28-14 loss to Colonia in the first round of the Central Jersey Group IV playoffs. Still, any disappointment should be short lived with the prospect of a 7th

victory coming at the expense of the Jaguars. A key moment for the Lions came on October 20th when the team faced a two-game losing skid as they hosted Pinelands for Homecoming. Quarterback, Matt Castronuova, rushed for 180 yards and running back, Dom Regina, had three touchdowns as Liberty routed

Pinelands 63-28 to snap the losing streak.

Jackson Memorial will be fired up to end the season on a note for the seniors. They lost a lot of talent to graduation after an 8-2 mark in 2011. Khani Glover leads the Jags with 11 touchdowns and has over 600 rushing yards. Quarterback, Joe Demaio, has been steady

with five touchdowns. The defense is led by linebacker, Ken Bradley, who has a team-high 77 tackles.

Prediction: Jackson Liberty 23 - Jackson Memorial 13

HAZLET - Although Raritan is winless this season, its record (0-9) is being disregarded by Holmdel football coach, Frank Papalia, as he gets his team ready to face the Rockets Thanksgiving Day in a 10 a.m. matchup

“Records don’t mean anything in this game,” said Papalia. “They are better than their record and don’t deserve to be 0-9. They’ve had our number the past six years and we’ve beaten them just once since 2006.”

Holmdel started off strongly by winning its first two games, but it was beaten by Rumson, 27-6, and then dropped a tough 14-13 overtime decision to Shore. Then it was routed by unbeaten Red Bank Catholic, 43-12.

Holmdel then received a tough break in a loss to Manasquan when

quarterback Rob Cantelli, the leading scorer with seven touchdowns, broke an arm and missed the rest of the season. He had completed 86 passes for 801 yards and nine touchdowns.

“We should have beaten Shore,” said Papalia, “but RBC was just awesome.”Raritan, with a relatively inexperienced team, wasn’t helped by its schedule in losing it first four games to Neptune, RBC, Manasquan and Carteret.

“We expected to be better this season,” said Raritan coach Anthony Petruzzi, in his third season, “Holmdel runs the ball very well and stopping the run has been a problem for us this year. We also are having trouble scoring inside the Red Zone (inside the 20) this season.

“Hopefully, we’ll be able to do that (stop the run) Thursday,” he said.”We have a lot of underclassmen and the experiece should help them next season.”

Raritan has one of the area’s top placekickers in CJ Pulcane, who has kicked four field goals this year. Its top lineman is two-way tackle, Pat Toal.

“He’s got good size (6-3, 290) and athletic ability,” sad Petruzzi “He’s aggresive and makes some ferocious hits on defense.”

Prediction: Holmdel 28 - Raritan 21

According to RFH Head CoachShane Fallon the loss of 26 seniorsfrom last year’s class and Roberto’sleadership has been invaluable. “It’snot just on the stat sheet, it’s the wayhe works with the kids in practice andthe way he picks them up after they’vemade a mistake; his patience isremarkable. Having Roberto is likehaving an extra coach out there. He’s avery special player and person for us,”explained Fallon.

Neptune and Asbury Park Renew Thanksgiving Day RivalryBy Michael Rogers

Neptune and Asbury Park will renew their Thanksgiving Day rivalry when the 6-2-1 Blue Bishops take on the 7-2 Fliers for the 80th time. Neptune holds a slight lead in the series that is 40-36-4. Both teams are having successful seasons and are coming off of wins in the first round of their sectional playoffs. Asbury Park has won the state title in 4 of the last 5 seasons and took the first step toward having another shot at a title as they defeated South Hunterdon (6-3) by the score of 21 to 14 in the first round of the NJSIAA Group I

state playoffs. Quarterback, Robert Barks-dale, completed 9 of 12 passes for 110 yards and a 14 yard touchdown pass to TyQuis Davis. He also rushed for 53 yards. Running back, Shaheem Tillman, had 125 yards on 19 carries and ran for a touchdown. He also had 2 catches for 40 yards and a touchdown catch. Neptune is also having a successful season and they are the defending Central Jersey Group III Champions. They defeated Lake-wood in the first round of the NJSIAA Group III State Playoffs by the score of 14 to 7. Running back, Myles Martin, scored on a 5 yard touchdown run while quarterback, Ajee Patterson, scored on a 9 yard touchdown run. The Flier defense was outstanding as they held the Piners offense to just 71 total yards of offense. The defense also helped set up the first score when Shakeem Richardson's inter-ception set up Neptune in great field position before Patterson's touchdown run. Lake-wood's only score came on a 59-yard inter-ception return for a score by Marquise Oliver. Both teams are moving into the semi finals in their respective playoff sectionals with Asbury Park moving on to play Sore Re-

gional (8-1), who is the number one seed in their group. Neptune will move on to play the number one seed also in Allentown. As for the Thanksgiving Day game, both teams have explosive offenses and both are playing good football right now so the Thanksgiving Day game should be a battle. In my opinion, though, Neptune just has too many weapons for Asbury Park to stop and they will win a high scoring affair by the score of 28 to 20.

RUMSON – After absorbing a crushing 13-10 first round playoff loss to Weequahic Friday night at Borden Stadium, Rumson Fair Haven Regional (RFH) would like nothing more than to end their ten game Thanksgiving game losing streak to undefeated and top ranked Red Bank Catholic (9-0).

On the opposite side of the spectrum, after overwhelming Monsignor Donovan 54-0 in their first round playoff game Friday night at Count Basie Stadium, the Caseys, ranked #1 in the shore and #12 in the state, must try to avoid falling in the trap of overlooking the Bulldogs and looking ahead to their second round matchup against St. Joseph (Mont.), ranked #5 in the state.

RBC owns a 29-24-6 Thanksgiving game advantage over the Bulldogs, with RFH last win coming in 2002. It will take a herculean effort for the Bulldogs to end their losing streak against this extremely talented Casey football team.

The Caseys like to run the ball to set up the situational pass and have been very successful employing this offensive strategy. They have a balance running attack led by junior, Larry Redaelli (119-772 Yrds, 10 Td), sophomore, Michael Cordova (67-476 Yrds, 5 Td), and senior Jesse Flaherty (8 Td).

Junior quarterback, Patrick Toomey (48-76,692 Yrds, 5TD, 4RTD), has been consistently solid at the position and comes up with the big play when needed. He has a tandem of reliable receivers in seniors, Chris Whitlock and James Taylor. Both Whitlock and Taylor excel in all phases of the game (offense, defense and special teams) as exhibited Friday night when Taylor ran back punts of 45 and 68 yards for touchdowns, while Whitlock leads the team with four interceptions.

Defensively, RBC has posted four shutouts and has given up only 53 points all season, for an average of 5.9 points/game.

Up front they are led by Rutgers recruit senior DT, Josh Kklecko, senior DE, Richie Curran, and FBS (D1A) prospect junior DT, Quenton Nelson. The Caseys boast a trio of ferocious linebackers in senior, Dylan Hroncich (64 T), junior, Ryan Schoer (65 T), and sophomore, James Gordinier. Whitlock and Taylor anchor the defensive backfield.

The Bulldogs (7-2) lost senior standout RB/DB, Connor Walsh, for the season in game one and have been plagued with injuries throughout the season. Senior captain and leading rusher and tackler, RB/LB, Travis Clark, was injured on the Bulldogs second series of downs in Friday’s loss and his status for Wednesday’s game is uncertain.

Offensively, RFH is led by senior quarterback, Danny Roberto (109-174-1404 Yds. 17 TD), and his dynamic set of receivers, senior, John Ryan (45-567 Yds. 8 TD), junior, San Shaud, and junior, Melquan Reevey. If Clark is unable to start at RB in Wednesday’s Thanksgiving game, junior, Jamie Reeves, will get the nod.

On the defensive side, the Bulldogs have only surrendered a total of 83 points this season for an average of 9.2 points per game, second to RBC in Class A Central Division.

Senior DT, John Greely, anchors a veteran defensive line while Clark and junior JT Jennings are standout linebackers for the Bulldogs. Senior defensive backs, Michael Clark and Davis Nitto, provide shutdown coverage in the backfield for RFH, allowing penetration from defensive line and linebackers.

Junior place kicker, Jake D’Amelio (23 extra pts. 9 FG, 50 pts), is weapon in both scoring and field position for the Bulldogs.

Starting time for the Thanksgiving rivalry game is 7:00PM Wednesday at RFH’s Borden Stadium. Prediction: RBC 30 - RFH 13

Middletown North Hopes to Surprise SouthBy Jim Hintelmann

MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP - On Thanksgiving Day in 2000, Middletown North running back, Billy Lyons, scored a pair of touchdowns to lead the Lions to a stunning 12-7 upset win over rival Middletown South.

No one knew it then, but that was to be the last time that North defeated South in football. The Eagles currntly have an 11-game win streak over their rivals, and will be favored to make it 12 when the two meet in their annual game Thursday; however, upsets have happened in this rivalry and North fans are hoping for a repeat of 2000.

“Middletown South is so tested that nothing bothers them,” said North coach, Joe Trezza. “They had lost two in a row (RBC and Colts Neck), but those are very good teams and South has been in the state playoffs every year. If you don’t give them your ‘A’ game, you will have problems.”

South snapped its brief two-game losing streak with an impressive 40-8 win over West Windsor South in its opening NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV playoff game Friday with running back, Jake Ripnick, having a big day with four touchdowns. He now has 13 touchdowns for the season.

“South offense revolves around the run, and Ripnick is a very good runner,” said Trezza.Quarterback Howie Brey is another key player for the Eagles both running and passing. He has completed 85 of 147 passes for 1100 yards and 10 touchdowns.

North has had a rough season at 3-6 due in part to a very strong schedule, but the Lions have one of the better quarterbacks in the area in senior, Cody Thompson. He has completed 97 of 158 passes for 1050 yards and 10 touchdowns not including North’s 42-29 loss to Freehold in Friday’s NJSIAA consolation playoff game.“Cody has had an excellent year,” said Trezza. “He has close to 1,500 yards in total offense and scored 15 touchdowns combined, passing and running.”

Prediction: Midd. South 35 - Midd. North 14

HOWELL— Before attending to further state playoff business, Colts Neck has a date with Howell for some Thanksgiving football. The Cougars have overcome heavy graduation losses from 2011 with a senior class that has played poised and confident on the field. Colts Neck is 8-1, tying a school record for wins, after a 34-20 victory over Steinert in the first round of the Central Jersey Group IV playoffs. The 3rd seeded Cougars will face 7th

seed Middletown South next week in a rematch of their early November 28-9 meeting won by Colts Neck.

The big play combination for the Cougars is quarterback, Mike Campbell, and wide receiver, Tim Vangelas. Campbell has over 1,400 yards passing with 13 touchdowns prior to the Steinert game. Vangelas has caught 12 of those scores and has 39 receptions for 777

yards. The running game has been productive too. Running back, Anthony Gargiulo, has 890 rush yards with eight touchdowns. He also stars on defense where he has a team-high 100 tackles. Junior linebacker, Nick Volpe, is second on the team with 94 tackles and five sacks on the season.

Howell has struggled to keep the offense going this season under new head coach, Derek Reichenbecher, on their way to a 1-8 record. However, the Rebels are trending in the right direction and showing improvement. In a NJSIAA consolation game, the offense ignited for 42 points in a 42-7 victory.
