Be a Good Samaritan …the Feast & Celebration Continue! The Rev. Caroline Vogel

I am thrilled to be back at Good Sam in this new capacity serving as your Associate Rector! It felt extra special to “comeback” preach and feast on the same day. What a fun day for a return home- our feast day of the Good Samaritan! I said it in my sermon and it bears repeating… I’m in awe of this parish and how you continue to find new ways to live into your name.

As many of you know, the cash plate offerings every Sunday are going to a different outreach mission. Our vestry outreach representatives Margaret Slattery and Jan Travins are doing an incredible job researching ministries and bringing them to the parish. Each week we are being educated on needs in our community and then having the opportunity to respond to those needs.

I keep wondering what the Holy Spirit is revealing to us through this growing weekly awareness of missions. It kind of feels like we’re opening little windows in an Advent Calendar every Sunday. You know the ones that each day you get to see a little more of the picture? Then at the end you can finally see the full picture.

It is one thing to be educated on one or a few missions; we have the good fortune to keep learning about lots of missions. Over time we are going to have such a fuller picture of the needs in our community.

And, I just keep wondering what the Holy Spirit is up to. How is the Spirit moving us as we learn and become aware? What will the picture look like? And, what might we feel called to do once we gain a better understanding of what the needs are in our community?

This is deeply spiritual work- this awareness building we are doing. We must be firmly grounded while continuing to grow in our faith and living in God’s hope if we are going to share God’s love with others. Recently a Thomas Merton quote reminded me of this very point:

What is the relation of [contemplation] to action? Simply this. He who attempts to act and do things for others or for the world without deepening his own self-understanding, freedom, integrity, and capacity to love, will not have anything to give others. He will communicate to them nothing but the contagion of his own obsessions, his aggressiveness, his ego-centered ambitions, his delusions about ends and means, his doctrinaire prejudices and ideas. There is nothing more tragic in the modern world than the misuse of power and action.

We must be diligent in

seeking the will of God, not

following our own will. We

must be willing to sit still and listen for the breath of the

Holy Spirit to guide us.

2 Our calling, our mission, our blessing is to BE GOOD SAMARITANS, and part of carrying out this blessed mission is to check ourselves. We must be diligent in seeking the will of God, not following our own will. We must be willing to sit still and listen for the breath of the Holy Spirit to guide us.

It takes courage and an openness of heart to allow ourselves to see the reality of need around us. It can be overwhelming and disheartening at times. All the more reason why we need to come together- be a container where we can talk about what we are seeing, what these missions are making us think about, grow in understanding of how our passions connect with these missions.

Given that our Feast Day only comes around once every three years, Cal and I have decided to extend the celebration. We are planning an Adult Christian Education class for the Fall that will allow us to spend time together discussing the things above.

So, please mark your calendars for the Sundays of Sept. 11-Oct. 2! We want your passion, your thoughts, your heart in the mix as we discern our missional calling as Good Samaritans. Peace + Gratitude, Caroline+

Book Group Tuesday, August 16 at 6:00 pm

he Good Samaritan Book Group will meet on Tuesday, August 16th at Newk’s Café at 6:00 PM. The book selection for the month of August is Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. The novel concerns the

building of a cathedral in the fictional town of Kingsbridge. The ambitions of three men merge, conflict and collide through 40 years of social and political upheaval as internal church politics affect the progress of the cathedral and the fortunes of the protagonists. A spellbinding epic tale of ambition, anarchy, and absolute power set against the sprawling medieval canvas of twelfth-century England, this is Ken Follett’s historical masterpiece. Due to the length of the novel (733 pgs) this is the 2nd gathering to discuss the book. Settle in to a good summer read and we look forward to seeing you for great discussion. Upcoming Selections: September: South of Broad by Pat Conroy. October: A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. – Mary Embler

We Need Your Input Holy Conversations Sunday, August 21 at 3:00 pm Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, Knoxville

ou are cordially invited to attend and participate in a holy conversation hosted by the Search & Nominating Committee (SNC). As we begin the

formal process of searching for our fifth Diocesan Bishop, the SNC needs your input on where we are as a diocese (our strengths and challenges, our assessment of our recent history, our hopes and dreams for the future) and what qualities we would like to see in our next bishop. Members of the SNC will be present to update you on the work of the Committee and what the process looks like going forward through the next year.

~~~ The Knoxville area (middle east region)
conversation is on August 21 at 3:00 pm at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church,
5337 Jacksboro Pike, Knoxville, 37928. Childcare will be provided.
~~~ The upper east region (Tri-Cities area) and the lower east region (Chattanooga area) will have similar conversations in August. In addition, all the clergy in our diocese will gather together, by region, in August to have holy conversations. PLEASE NOTE: Later in the month, information about a Search & Nominating Committee Survey will be published. We’ll need your input once again! We thank you for assisting the SNC.

Please do all you can to see that we have a good representation from Good Samaritan on August 21 at 3:00 pm at Good Shepherd. Every voice is important as we seek God’s wisdom and guidance. Rally Day Aug. 28 – After the 8:30 & 11 am services

ust try one thing new...it could change your life!"

Our annual Rally Day is coming up on Sunday morning August 28. This is the chance to find your

place to fit in at Good Sam. All of our ministries will have sign up sheets and people there to help you understand what each does. There will be printed booklets available prior to and on Rally Day to better explain what each group does. We hope that each person will find three places to fit in. There are openings in worship, education, outreach, pastoral care and fellowship. Our theme says it

all; "Just try one thing new...it could change your life." Our theme this year is still being planned; there will be more information about that coming soon. (Look for more information about Rally Day in weekly e-newsletters and in church bulletin announcements.)

If you have questions come to the Picnic on the Porch on Wednesday, July 27 to get a head start. Someone there can help you to understand what each ministry does. (You may also contact the church office at [email protected]). Good Sam is special because of the people. Find your niche, but do not be afraid to try something new. It WILL change your life. – The Shared Ministry Discernment Team

Outreach for August 2016 Cash Plate Offerings

or 2016, the vestry voted to dedicate 100% of the cash offerings each Sunday to Outreach, and the response has been spectacular. We are so grateful for the

generosity of Good Samaritans.

August 7 - Compassion Coalition A group of our parishioners have completed ten weeks of training with Compassion Coalition as a Circle of Support team, to mentor a person who has recently moved into housing through VMC. They have agreed to a one-year mentoring visitation--meeting with the resident once a week. This mentoring team will visit and participate in activities and outings with the resident. A donation today will help support this ministry.

August 14 - Diocese of South Dakota The Diocese of South Dakota is our companion diocese. The Native American reservations of North and South Dakota are in some of the poorest counties in the US. Over half the Episcopal Churches in the Diocese of South Dakota are on reservations. There is great need in the diocese and yet there is great work going on in the churches of the Native Americans. Our contribution today will be sent to

August 21 - Random Acts of Flowers Random Acts of Flowers recycles and repurposes flowers by engaging dedicated volunteer teams to deliver beautiful bouquets and moments of kindness to individuals in healthcare facilities across Knoxville. As a recycling “green” nonprofit organization run almost entirely by volunteers, Random Acts of Flowers is committed to nourishing the health of the environment, individuals, and the community.

August 28 - Sertoma Center Sertoma Center’s Mission is to provide programs and services to empower adults with intellectual disabilities to achieve their fullest potential. Donations help provide everyday living experiences not covered by government funding. Our donation will help to support scholarship programs for individuals in the community who receive no services; provide job and life skills training; fund art, dance and recreation therapy; help send individuals to camp; and ensure that people with intellectual disabilities have the tools they need to be contributing, valued members of the community.

News From Our Seminarian Liz Embler

s I enter into my final year of seminary at The School of Theology at the University of the South, I am in awe of the swift passage of time and I am so incredibly

grateful for the experiences I’ve had thus far. God has called many wonderful people to serve the church and I am blessed to have spent time with a few on this holy mountain. These people have helped me understand community in a new and beautiful way. From sharing every study guide to helping move out a classmate’s home that was flooding, while he and his wife were both out of town, my seminary community has proven to be an amazing group of people. I am definitely excited to move on to the next part of this journey. I’m eager to start putting to practice the many things I’ve learned and studied in the classroom, but I will miss this place and these people. This year will be very busy, and I hope to make the most of the time I have left here.

This spring I was granted a fellowship and thus had the opportunity to travel to Haiti with the Outreach Office at Sewanee. They have a long-standing relationship with the diocese of Haiti and several communities and take multiple trips per year to continue work on existing projects. My boyfriend, Robert, and I will travel to Haiti again in August to visit the seminary in Port Au Prince and attend a national youth gathering. We are both really excited about helping to create relationships between the Haitian seminary and The School of Theology. As soon as we return from Haiti, my school year will be begin. I’m grateful that we’ll start with a Quiet Day at St. Mary’s Convent. Traditionally we have a

bishop who leads us through guided meditations or a series of prayer-provoking talks that we use to prepare our hearts and minds for the days, weeks, and semester ahead. In addition to my required classes this fall semester, I have the amazing opportunity to do an independent study that explores how photography can be used to communicate the Gospels. I’ll attend a Documentary Photography class at the College of Arts and Sciences that focuses on basic photography skills as well as the ethics of photography and will also incorporate additional readings assignments with one of my seminary professors. This fall, I’ll finish my yearlong field education/ church internship at St. Thomas in Huntsville, AL and I’ll begin looking towards a new church to begin my career with. In the new year, I will also be taking General Ordination Exams, a series of comprehensive written exams administered by the Board of Examining Chaplains of The Episcopal Church. The exams will take place on January 3, 4, and 6, 2017. I will definitely need your prayers and well wishes for that stressful time. The exams are pass/fail, but stressful nonetheless. Grover Cleveland, my much beloved (and much spoiled) Basset Hound/Labrador mix, and I will be taking long walks at every opportunity. This spring, I was made a Candidate for Ordination to the Diaconate and will be ordained as a deacon at Diocesan Convention on February 11, 2017, God willing and the people consenting of course. And then I’ll be working hard to finish my final semester of seminary. Graduation is set for May 12, 2017 and I know that day will come much sooner than I’m ready for.

I am continuously grateful to be a member at Good Sam. Thank you for creating a healthy, safe, and vibrant church for me to grow up in. Thank you for the many opportunities I’ve had in my life to practice ministry have helped to prepare me for seminary and the years of ministry ahead. Thank you for continuing to be a safe and welcoming place to come home to. Thank you for supporting me financially. You’ve helped me pay rent, buy groceries, purchase textbooks, and have made it so that, with careful budgeting, I’ve been able to go on trips and have experiences that I would not otherwise have been able to do. Thank you all for your continued prayers, love and support, on this journey. I would not have been able to do this without you all. – Liz Embler

Coordinators Needed! Would you Help?

e have a few ministries at Good Sam that need leadership. The Women’s Group, The Men’s Group and the late service Cookie Sunday

ministry are looking for coordinators to help get these groups organized.

The coordinators for the Men’s Group and the Women’s Group are responsible for getting an initial meeting organized and enlisting help from others to plan activities (as many as the group wants to have) for the program year. The coordinators of these groups would also be responsible for getting information to Jennifer Dunn, our

A

5 communications director ([email protected]) so she can put news of the group’s activities in LOGOS, the weekly e-newsletter and the Sunday service bulletins.

Once a month, (during most but not all months) we have Cookie Sunday after each service. Maryanne Hoemann coordinates Cookie Sunday after the early service, but the late service is looking for someone to take that role. The coordinator’s responsibilities are limited to scheduling folks who sign up on Rally Day to plan one of the monthly Cookie Sundays after the late service. The coordinator would also be responsible for reminding those folks each month of their duties. If you are interested in coordinating one of these three ministries, please contact the office at [email protected].

VBS Wrap-up – A FUN Week!

e had an awesome week of learning about and experiencing Miracles! We ate, sang, crafted and played our way through miracles of healing,

miracles on the water and every miracle we could think of. The children amazed us with their insight and knowledge.

Here are some of the things they decided a miracle is: it leads you to God, cannot happen without faith, gives you hope, they happen to ordinary people. Brainstorming, they said the following were miracles: birth of a baby, butterflies, getting your teeth, and then they got many of Jesus’ miracles. Their enthusiasm and energy is infectious.

We ended up with 53 children, 19 junior & senior high helpers and 22 adults. There are so many people to thank who did things behind the scenes, I couldn’t possibly remember them all, but I do want to mention our teachers, many of whom do not have any children in the program and took the time to give this gift to our family. Special thanks to storytellers: Jennifer Doherty, Sinead Doherty & Glen Graber. Special area teachers: Nancy DeNovo, Michelle Bales & Linda Meyer. Recreation: Lora Doherty, Registration: Janna Werner & Sheri Kilbey, and Snacks: Betsy Leach. Thanks to Katherine Smithwick for her unforgettable FISH skit and Carie Mackey & Freddie Brabson who came to our rescue at the last minute to do a video montage.

We couldn’t do VBS without our Junior & Senior high helpers. I am convinced they are who make it fun for the children. Listed here are those youth who gave of their time to make our week so successful: (High Schoolers) Meg Mitchell, Molly Calhoun, Julia Kilbey, Kelly Hudson, Lala Hilizah, Ellon Hilizah, & Mason Werner. Middle Schoolers: Josie Bales, Bobby Slattery, Tess Martin, Maddie Bell, & Whitney Repine.

VBS Outreach

ur outreach for Vacation Bible School was FISH. We set a goal of 500 cans or dollars and the children were asked to bring canned goods or monetary donations

every day and place them in the basket. We were so thrilled to have surpassed our goal by over 300 dollars or cans!!! Our total cans and dollars was 803, which was divided between Good Sam and Peace Lutheran! We talked a lot about giving and sharing and we even had a song about it…when he calls on me, I will give my all! So proud of this effort!

I don’t think I have any more articles, although would like you to rerun the request for leaders for Children’s Church and to help make shelves in the nursery and to sew cushions. Thanks.

URGENT: Children’s Church Helpers Needed

hank you to Kristen Sanders, Lauren Passarello and Laurie Smith who have served as Children’s Church leaders for the last few years. They have decided to step

down at the end of the school year that leaves us with 2 openings to fill for summer and next year. Children’s Church is the group that follows the cross out after the gospel lesson and returns at the Peace. There are 4 teams of 2 teachers each, rotating every 4 weeks, which gives you a lot of flexibility with trading to accommodate busy schedules. Children participate in a simple children’s church service. You do not need to have children in the class to lead. Please let me know ([email protected]) if you might be able or interested helping in this class. Thanks. – Ann Backus

Youth News!

t has been a wonderful summer, and the youth of Good Samaritan have been up to all sorts of amazing things. Many participated in the mission trip to St. Louis, MO at

the end of May, and put in some hard work and deep discussion (as well as lots of fun!). We had lots of youth who attended Grace Point Camp, and many worked hard as counselors, serving as awesome role models to the younger campers. Vacation Bible School could not have been as fun and easy as it was without assistance from many Jr. and Sr. Helpers, who put in lots of work to give the younger children a wonderful experience. Good Sam has impressive youth, and I am so fortunate to get to work with them!

As we look toward fall, and another school year, I am excited for all the possibilities that lie ahead with this group of young people, and the experiences we will have together. I encourage you each to take advantage of the many opportunities available to young people.

Middle schoolers, we have Knoxville Episcopal Youth (KEY) events monthly, Sam’s Saints (your youth group) will meet twice a month, and there are Diocesan activities like Diocesan Youth Service Day and New Beginnings, targeted specifically at getting you connected with the larger church! You should

High schoolers, we have EY and KEY, as well as pilgrimages, retreats and mission opportunities. Happening is a wonderful event for youth in 10th grade or higher to really explore their faith, and who they are as individuals. You also get the chance to staff middle school events like New Beginnings, offering leadership experience and fun!

I hope all of our youth will select some new activities to participate in this fall, as there are many exciting opportunities out there for you!

And to our graduating seniors, stay in touch and know that we are here whenever you need a community to fall back on! We are so excited for the many great things you all are doing! I look forward to another faith-filled, fun year with you all - Sinead Doherty

New Youth Opportunity! Club 45!

o you have a child who is a rising 4th or 5th grader this fall? If so, they are invited to join an exciting new ministry at Good Samaritan, Club 45! This is a

mini youth group that will meet once a month, to help bridge the gap between children's ministries and official youth programming. It is a chance to build relationships with other children in the parish, as well as to grow in faith. We will participate in a variety of activities including fun things like bowling, service projects to help the community and worship related events. More information is coming soon, and our kickoff event will be in August!! If you have a child this age, please RSVP to Sinead Doherty at [email protected] to receive more information.

A Prayer for the Bishop Search

Most gracious God, who gave your only Son to be our Good Shepherd: Look favorably upon your Church, and guide the hearts and minds of those who shall choose a bishop to be a pastor to this Diocese, that we may receive a faithful leader, who will go with us out in the world, making disciples who make a difference; and nurture in your servants who wrestle with this call a spirit of wisdom and confidence, joy and humility; through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

We Need Your Input Holy Conversations Lay Focus Group Gatherings

You are cordially invited to attend and participate in a holy conversation hosted by the Search & Nominating Committee (SNC). As we begin the formal process of searching for our fifth Diocesan Bishop, the SNC needs your input on where we are as a diocese (our strengths and challenges, our assessment of our recent history, our hopes and dreams for the future) and what qualities we would like to see in our next bishop. Members of the SNC will be present to update you on the work of the Committee and what the process looks like going forward through the next year. Please do all you can to see that we have a good representation from every parish. Every voice is important as we seek God’s wisdom and guidance.

Our Clergy Are Meeting Too:

Watch for News On Our Upcoming Survey! Information about this important survey will be published soon! We’ll need your input once again! Thank you for assisting the Search & Nominating Committee.

We Need Your Photos!

The Bishop Search Committee is looking for a variety of photographs to use on the bishop search website. To this end, we invite you to submit your favorite photographs that capture life in our diocese.

They may be of parish events, photos taken during services or ordinations, or around your church property. Photos of children (and adults too!) at church, camp, Vacation Bible School, or Grace Point would also be great. Photos of our beautiful mountains, lakes, streams, city or rural life - anything showing the beauty and diversity of the landscape in East Tennessee are also welcome.

Photos need to be of high resolution. By submitting photos to the committee, you are giving permission for their use. You may send them to our email address at [email protected] or add them to our dropbox photo file at the following link www.dropbox.com/request/7gpAcR6GQBEuw3Vey90m.
