  • Epitaxy is the process by which a crystalline structure of a particular composition grows ontop of an existing composition, directly influencing the composition of the new crystal.

Businesses, ideas, projects and people grow because of a connection that naturally develops and leads to collaboration. Much like the epitaxial phase of crystallization, the growth of a business is defined by the space surrounding it, so the layout must effectively breed collaboration. An overlap of private and public spaces is necessary for collaboration to occur because these in-between spaces allow for spontaneous personal connections to develop.

The space accommodates 30+ members of a coworking lab, providing individual workspace, open office space, private offices, project rooms, videoconference space, a forum space, a work caf, a model studio, presentation space and a resource library. There is a variety of open, public spaces with in-between spaces and private spaces mixed in to provide flexibility for all users.

The use and purpose of this space is defined by implied and actual borders, proximity to other spaces, and accessibility to the space. Layered planes and implied borders suggest movement and use, and support collaboration within the space.

  • The entrance on the Northwest side naturally became the main entry point where NEXTers and newcomers meet.

Two project roomsfeaturing distinct, contrasting seating and meeting stylesimmediately to the left and right of the entrance are an extension of the existing shell relative to the curvature of the building as well as the storefront glass walls to achieve a semi-private open work space, similarly to the growth of a new crystalline structure that is defined by the base structure.

  • To offer a variety of work spaces, private enclaves enclosed with the V.I.A. System are coupled with enclosed private offices. The offices radiate around existing shafts, taking on almost fractal, crystalline properties.

The private offices are more established areas with more work space, storage and overall footprint. The private enclaves have space for more temporary, focused work for one or two people at a time.

One can find small solo spaces in between the enclaves to take a private phone call or have a quick conversation that is protected with the help of acoustic side panels.

  • 6 is a central hub for a network of designers and the surrounding community by providing space that encourages people to learn and collaborate together. Many of the spaces within the studio overlap and have multipurpose, modular furniture that will allow the user to make both public and private connections.

The concept that drove the studio was the idea of six degrees of separation, which states that everyone and everything in the world can be connected in six steps or less. This idea applies to the design of the studios communal spaceswith hexagonal furniture that provides a setting for people to connect across all planes. The goal of 6 is to provide a space where potential low-income homeowners can come and receive design help from a team of students and professionals. The collective will work on designing modular houses that address the needs and budgets of low-income families.

  • LAP JOINT CONNECTIONTwo components will slide together and latch on to the other to form a connection that cannot be pulled apart. The two components can still be slid apart so they will need additional support.

The lap joint represents the designers of 6 forming a connection to community members in need of financial and housing assistance.

TONGUE + GROOVE CONNECTIONSimilar to tongue and groove connections, a second set of components pull together with a sheet holding the two together so the pair can be pulled apart but they cannot be slid apart. Again, additional support is needed to establish a whole concept.

This pair of connections represents the problem faced by the community members of Richmond (the Section 8 Housing issue, lack of knowledge of housing upkeep and maintenance, and general lack of support) with potential solutions, like more affordable housing or educational opportunities provided by designers and advisors.

PEG + HOLE CONNECTIONThe two pairs of connections fit together like a peg to its hole. With the support of the tongue and groove connection, the lap joint that could not be pulled apart can no longer be slid apart either. However, the tongue and groove connection is still in need of additional support.

The two components forming a connection represents the team of designers and advisors acting as a support system for the community in need, but it also shows that they are only halfway to the solution at this point.

PUZZLE CONNECTIONA structure that supports all types of connections is the final step in the equation. Each type of connection must have its support system in order to remain secure in its position. This way, the lap joint cannot pull apart within the tongue and groove connection, which also cannot pull apart within the structure so all the pieces are fully supported.

The supportive structure represents the studio space as a whole. The space must provide support to a team of designers and advisors who can in turn provide support to members of the community. Without this supportive space, all of the pieces could pull apart at any time.

  • Using innovative tactics, 6 will address this issue by designing and building homes with quality and care while still maintaining affordability. In addition, the space will also serve to educate prospective homeowners on how to care for a home and properly manage their finances. Rather than paying for temporary rental living in a Section 8 house, these families will affordable homes designed by 6 and will own a home in the end, which would serve as a stepping stone to a higher quality of living.

  • The building housing the studio has an almost industrial aesthetic because of the existing aged brick walls, exposed beam structure and concrete flooring. All furniture and spaces within the studio are composed of reclaimed wood, steel and concrete. In order to provide ease of circulation, 6 provides accessible paths wide enough for turnaround at every point and utilizes the existing elevator to gain access to the second floor.

  • SPRAY is the manifestation of a do what you want project that embodies the ideals of 3AJEEB. 3AJEEB (ahhjheeb) is a playful Arabizi word meaning strange in a strange way, cool in a cool way, and slightly weird in a slightly weird way.

The objective was to design a twelve foot by twelve foot area that contained space for two people to work and rest and space for an animal.

The space is an underwater spray paint studio, so the work being performed by the two people is cutting stencils and spray painting, while the rest is sleeping with the fishes.

SPRAY was a four-part project that involved designing the space, researching the lighting for the space, constructing a model and building a human-scale version of the seating found in the rest area from cardboard

  • A total of eight tubes occupy the roof of the studio: four solar tubes and four air filtration tubes. Every other tube is a solar tube and the remaining are air tubes for equal coverage.

The solar tubes utilize the reflection of natural light from the sun to bring in extra lighting to the portion of the studio that is below water to create a different ambiance in the work space.

    < SOLAR TUBES

SPRAY IN RELATION TO COAST LINE

The air tubes work to ventilate the work space as a majority of the work being done here is spray painting. Stacks of fans cycle to push wasted air out and pull clean air in.

  • 2120 is a Boutique Design Firm centrally located in Richmond, Virginia. The goal of 2120 is to provide a workspace for four to five designers, house their material library and provide a meeting + waiting area for clients. Because the firm is so small, the whole space must foster connections between the designers and between their clients.

The firm has aspects to it that are unique and help drive the brand and forge connectivity. The hexagon is a prevalent shape among the space because it allows for many people to gather and connect across a multitude of planes. The brand is carried through the meeting area, the custom mural and the custom partition separating the work space from the private kitchen area.

  • The task is to design a 50,000 squarefoot store that is both connected to the urban Washington, D.C. environment as well as nature itself. In order to forge connections with the space and the equipment, all of the applied materials are muted in comparison to the products with natural materials to allow the products to stand out and be the center of attention.

The space must accommodate space for bike equipment, camp equipment, aquatics, climbing equipment, ski, footwear, fitness equipment, apparel, outdoorwear, restrooms, offices, warehouse space, a garage, checkout area, a common area and test zones to try out equipment.

  • I am a local Richmond artist, studying Interior Design in the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University. I have been developing my fine art portfolio for almost five years now. I did a lot of experimenting with different media for the first year or so: wax, ink, paint, spray paint, wood burning... You name it. I instantly fell in love with the idea of controlled chaos and being able to completely manipulate the application of the spray paint to make anything I wanted. I am most concerned with the technicality of a piece--the goal is to create a seamless finish with as few imperfections as possible.

Everything that is worth anything to me started with a connection. Knowing a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy really has been the biggest impact in any success I have had. While in college, I have realized the value of friendships and connections, leading me to become president of VCUs Chapter of the American Society of Interior Design, as well as a member of VCUs Chapter of Kappa Pi Honorary Art Fraternity.
