Introduction
• This Tuesday, our nation will elect its 44th President.
• The purpose of this lesson is not to tell you how to vote.
• I will attempt to show you some Biblical principles that we should all agree on.
David Lipscomb
• Was a famous preacher from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.
• He was not an Apostle nor was he inspired.
David Lipscomb
• His theory was that since God is in control of nations, He alone will determine the outcome of political changes.
David Lipscomb
• If God wants a particular ruler in place, He will raise him up.
• Or, He might take a ruler down.
• All for God’s own reasons
David Lipscomb
• God might raise an ungodly man to high office, such as Pharaoh, Nebuchadnezzar or Herod.
• Such ungodly men out-number the godly leaders God has raised.
David Lipscomb
• When a Christian votes for one he thinks is the right man, he may select a man different from the one God wants.
David Lipscomb
• After all, God may want an evil man in power for some reason.
David Lipscomb
• Not knowing God’s will in advance, the Christian then is voting against God’s will.
• How to avoid this?
• DO NOT VOTE AT ALL.
The Problem
• The kingdoms of Jesus’ day did not use a democratic system.
• Only one existed in all the years that the Bible covers.
The Problem
• The typical government of those times was a monarchy.
• There were Empires in the later years of the O.T. and during the N.T. times.
The Problem
• People did not vote for their rulers.
• This concept is NEVER addressed anywhere in the entire Bible.
• So, now what?
The U.S.A.
• Before becoming a nation in 1776 the people of America rejected the concept of a Monarchy.
• It was a hard fought battle that was won!
The U.S.A.
• The USA became a nation governed by the people and for the people.
• Democracy was established and still is the desire of most of the world today.
The U.S.A.
• All that being said, what is the role of a Christian when it comes to being a citizen of the USA?
• Certainly there is not Scripture for voting.
The U.S.A.
• Who do we vote for?
• Should we as a Christian even vote? (David Lipscomb suggested that we do not vote).
• ¿Que votemos para?
• ¿Debemos como cristianos incluso votar? (David Lipscomb sugirió que no votamos).
This Is What I Do Know . . .
• Christians are to support their government:
• I Tim. 2:1-2 – pray.• Rom. 13:1-2 – be
subject to them.• Rom. 13:5-6 – pay
taxes and give respect.
• Los cristianos deben apoyar su Gobierno:
• I Tim. 2:1-2 – orar. • ROM. 13:1-2 –
someterse a ellos. • ROM. 13:5-6 –
pagar impuestos y dar respeto.
This Is What I Do Know . . .
• We can express our thoughts regarding the leaders:
• Matt. 14:3-4 – John the Baptist did.
• 2 Sam. 12:7-10 – Nathan the prophet did.
• Acts 24:24-25 – Paul caused Felix to fear.
• Hechos 24:24-25 – Paul causado Felix a temer.
This Is What I Do Know . . .
• God allows us to appeal for our rights:
• Esther 7:1-6 – made an appeal to change the law.
• Acts 16:35-39 – Paul demanded an apology.
• Acts 25:10-12 – Paul appealed to Caesar.
• Hechos 25:10-12 – Pablo apeló a César.
This Is What I Do Know . . .
• Our government requests the input of its citizens by voting:
• Titus 3:1-2 – by voting we are obeying that request.
• I Pet. 2:13-17 – by voting we are submitting to the ordinances of men to do good.
• Tito 3:1-2 – votando estamos obedeciendo a esa petición.
What About God’s Will?
• We must always acknowledge that God’s will is always done.
• We cannot thwart the will of God in any way, except how we stand individually before God.
What About God’s Will?
(Mt. 26:39).
• Was Paul wrong to pray for his thorn to be removed three times because God told him “no”? (2 Cor. 12:7-10).
• Was it wrong for Jesus to pray, “Let this cup pass from Me”? (Mt. 26:39).
What If I Don’t Know the Will of God?
• 3 John 2 – do I pray for health and prosperity?
• Matt. 6:11 – we are to pray for our food.
• But I still have to go out and work to provide my food (2 Thess. 3:10).
What If I Don’t Know the Will of God?
• What is the difference to pray for our rulers and then vote for the best we know how and accept the result as God’s will?
What Is Our First Loyalty?
• Jesus Christ is King of Kings!
• I Timothy 6:15• Revelation 17:14• Daniel 4:32• Isaiah 40:15
• Jesús Cristo es rey de Reyes!
• I Timoteo 6:15 • Apocalipsis 17:14 • Daniel 4:32 • Isaías les
