SCRIPTURE READINGS

First Reading: Acts 10:34a, 37‑43 This is part of an early sermon preached by St. Peter in which he proclaims the risen Jesus to be the Savior of those who believe in him, and Judge of the living and the dead. Second Reading: Colossians 3:1‑4 Through our Baptism, we already share in the risen of Christ, though in a hidden and mysterious way. Gospel: John 20:1‑9 On their finding Jesus’ tomb empty, the truth of his resurrection begins to dawn on his disciples.

A Message from Fr. Tim, Holy Week 2020

Sister Theresa Rickard, President and Executive Director of World RENEW writes: “Kathleen Norris, a noted author on spirituality writes: “We human beings learn best how to love when we’re a bit broken, when our plans fall apart, when our myths of self-sufficiency and safety are shattered.” This past month as the COVID – 19 virus has ravaged our communities, we as a nation and a world our experiencing our brokenness and vulnerability in a frightening way. The spread of this virus heightens our awareness of what little control we have over our lives. The suffering of those infected with the virus, the fatigue of the healthcare workers, and the rising anxiety that can be crippling also challenges our certitudes. It makes us look more deeply for meaning and the suffering. I firmly believe that the Covid-19 virus is not God’s will, but God can enter this time of illness, death and economic instability with redemptive love. As we enter into Holy Week amid the pandemic, we unite the suffering of the world with Jesus’ suffering, trusting in the promise of the resurrection.” Support from our parish family at this time of uncertainty continues to be strong and we are inspired and humbled. Since the 17th of March, we mourn the physical presence of our parishioners. We thank God for the gift of the Internet and Facebook as we are able to celebrate spiritual communion. We would like to express our deep appreciation for the efforts of those reaching out to us on a daily basis to check on our welfare, and those who dropped off meals and gave Fr. Michal a break from cooking. The German theologian Karl Rahner was once asked what book to read to strengthen one’s faith and he replied, “No book”. He said “Go out into your community and help someone in need.” We are blessed at Good Shepherd to have parishioners who have accepted the challenge of Fr. Karl Rahner. Individuals have reached out to our older population to check on their welfare and others have gone grocery shopping for those who are unable. Additionally, there are also those parishioners in the medical field who put themselves on the line to assist others. We also are astounded by parishioners who continue to mail in their offering, as well as the fifty percent increase of new registrants for online giving, even though the COVID-19 virus has put a strain on families’ financial budgets. The goodness of people is very much evident, and we are truly a resurrected people all working together as one family. This year, Holy Week is different and there is a mourning for tradition. How does what we are going through as a nation and the Church’s response affect us? How can we make Holy Week meaningful? We cannot be together physically, but we are together spiritually during Holy Week. Pray as a family to be inspired by the liturgies, the Scriptures and especially the Passion of Christ. For it is only through our love for one another that we connect with the unconditional love of God, giving us all the strength to cope. You are encouraged to celebrate the Triduum, the gift of Jesus from the Eucharist, the gift of Jesus from the cross and the gift of the resurrected Jesus who changes our lives to be inspired and uplifted in the promise of new life. Nature is alive – birds are singing, grass is growing. New life is coming. May our tombs of fear, hopelessness, and anxiety be emptied to follow the resurrected Jesus who brings hope and light. Family Connection

In the Easter Gospel we hear about how the disciples found the tomb empty three days after Jesus' death. We are also told that they do not yet understand the Scriptures or that Jesus had been raised from the dead. That understanding gradually unfolded for the disciples as they began to experience the risen Lord. Similarly, our understanding of Jesus' Resurrection unfolds for us throughout our lives. In the weeks ahead, we will hear how the first disciples moved from confusion, doubt, and skepticism to faith. Their experience can teach us how we too might receive this gift of faith from God.

Gather your family members and ask them to share what they know about the events that happened in the days after Jesus' crucifixion. Invite your family to imagine that they are among Jesus' first disciples. Read together today's Gospel, John 20:1-9. Reflect together on the Gospel with questions such as these: If you had been among the first disciples who heard that the stone had been removed from Jesus' tomb and that Jesus' body was no longer here, what would you think? What did Mary of Magdala, Simon Peter, and the disciple whom Jesus loved think had happened? Recall that this experience is the first indication Jesus' disciples have that He is risen. Throughout the Easter season, we will learn more about how the disciples came to believe that Jesus had been raised from the dead. (Loyola Press)

ASK A FRANCISCAN…

At the conclusion of the penitential rite at Mass, the celebrant says, “May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.” In the Gloria, we pray, “You take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.” Which is it? Is God merciful or not? Is God forgiving or not? God is always merciful and forgiving but refuses to force these on us. These prayers express our willingness to receive these gifts and avoid whatever in the future would interfere with them (for example, holding a grudge against someone).

Perfect contrition is sorrow for one’s sins based upon love for God, which includes the firm resolution not to commit them any more.

When contrition arises from “a love by which God is loved above all else, contrition is called “perfect” the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches.

There are two things a Catholic must do:

1. Pray an act of contrition out of love for God. “My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against You, whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with Your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.”

2. Make a firm commitment to go to confession when that becomes possible.

Pope Francis encouraged Catholics confined to their homes to ask God for forgiveness and then to go to confession when they are able.
