Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Jesus declares in Luke 6:47-48, “I will show you what someone is like who

comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them. That one is like a man

building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock, when the flood arose, the river

burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built.”

These powerful words from Luke’s Gospel, the 6th

chapter, are some of my favorite when

officiating a wedding ceremony. The building of a healthy marriage upon the foundation of Christ,

in word and action, is vital to a marriage, especially when the “floods arise”… when the storms of

life come. These words are vital when building a community of faith as well… for the developing

years of a congregation in mission for Christ.

Our congregational development and growth has been a rather steady process during this

foundational time, certainly not without some “rising water”. I believe we have been “digging

deeply” in order to lay a foundation on the “Rock”- which is the Living Word, Jesus Christ. Our

goal is to be a “well built” congregation, one built on God’s Word that will hold up against the

storms of a culture and society that are looking to “flood” us… to overtake us and wash us away.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, I believe the next few months will be both a very exciting and very

challenging time for us, so I urge you to continue to hear Jesus’ words and act on them! “Dig

deeply” through continued prayer… through continued Bible study… through continued

commitment… through continued listening to the voice of God… through continued acting in the

way of service and faithfulness… and through the continued “building up” of one another…

encouraging and supporting one another.

It may appear that…the river is within its banks… but we can be quite sure that it will continue to

rise and will come flooding in our direction- looking to take our children and families on a

dangerous ride. But with our firm foundation, built on the Rock, what a wonderful opportunity this

will be for us to witness to the Living Word, Jesus Christ!

Thank you Lord and fellow servants of Christ! Pastor A.J.

Confirmation Instruction 2012

The Living Word Lutheran Confirmation Youth are

currently in Section Four of their study of Lutheran

Identity. The subject matter for this section is

Luther’s doctrines of Vocation, Left and Right

Hand Kingdom, and Common Heresies of the

Church. This is the final section for this year’s

instruction. There will be a review session on May

2nd

, a final quiz on May 9th

, and a “party time”

celebration on May 16th

.

The goals of this year’s instruction are:

1. Understand God’s activity and purpose in

the Bible-story as a whole.

2. Grow in your trusting relationship with

Jesus Christ.

3. Learn about the Lutheran perspective and

identity.

4. Support and encourage each other in faith

and Christian life.

Living Word Sunday School

The Living Word Sunday School year is quickly

coming to a close. The final regular class session

will be held on May 6th

, with an end of the year

celebration scheduled for May 13th

. On the 13th

parents are invited to join their children for a time

of singing, crafts, and snacks. This will be no

longer than 30 minutes in length, so you can take

Mom out to lunch for Mother’s Day (or go

fishing)!! The children will also be sharing the Gift

of Music with the congregation during the service

on May 13th

. Worship that Sunday is at the Barn.

We have all learned a great deal this year,

including:

- Bible Stories from the Old and New Testament

- new songs that help us praise Jesus (THANK

YOU MUSIC LEADERS!)

- that our teachers come ready EVERY Sunday

to share their love of Jesus! (THANK YOU

TEACHERS!)

- that our parents help when needed, share their

children with us on Sundays, and do a

GREAT job of teaching the WORD at

home! (THANK YOU PARENTS!)

- that our Living Word kids bring us incredible

joy AND can rise to the occasion when

sharing the Christmas Story with the

congregation! (THANK YOU

STUDENTS!)

Page 3: Jesus declares - s3.amazonaws.com€¦ · 2nd, a final quiz on May 9th, and a “party time” celebration on May 16th The goals of this year’s instruction are: 1. Understand God’s

- that being a part of Sunday School means

building amazing relationships - with God

the Father, Son and Holy Spirit - and with

each other!

Although we are ending Sunday School for the

year, we still have opportunities over the summer

to learn, love and laugh together! Watch the

church calendar and newsletters for upcoming

Living Word Lutheran Church Alexandria, MN

From the Stewardship Committee:

2012 Benevolence recipients as determined by the Committee and approved by the Church Council: 1. Augustana District: the district in LCMC to which Living Word Lutheran Church belongs, emphasizing classic Lutheran theology and providing services to congregations and pastors. $2000 2. China Ventures: Its mission is to build relationships between Christian communities in the United States and in China. This is accomplished through much prayer as well as the implementation of the projects and efforts described in their website. $1000 3. Eastern European Mission Network: They serve to mobilize congregations for missions involvement, to send out career and short-term missionaries, and renew and equip the body of Christ in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. $1000 4. Institute of Lutheran Theology: is an independent, pan-Lutheran theological school, holding that God in Jesus Christ brings sinners to repentance and new life. This seminary will provide pastors to the LCMC $3000 5. CCM-Jamaica: an organization seeking to share the gospel of Jesus Christ and disciple new Jamaican believers through many diverse forms of ministry. $1000 6. Life Right: serves the needs in this area of those who are committed to making a possible life change, teaching them “to do the next right thing” using Christ centered principles. $1000 7. LOVE Inc. of Douglas County: The mission of Love in the Name of Christ is to mobilize local churches to transform lives and communities In the Name of Christ. $1500 8. LCMC Headquarters: This is the head office of the association of congregations who are free in Christ, accountable to one another and rooted in the Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions. We are members of the LCMC. $2500 9. Lutheran World Relief: Mission: Affirming God’s love for all people, we work with Lutherans and partners around the world

to end poverty, injustice and human suffering. Vision: Empowered by God’s unconditional love in Jesus Christ, we envision a world in which each person, every community and all generations live in justice, dignity and peace. $1000 10. Mount Carmel Ministries: is a non-profit, Christ-centered corporation. Areas within the ministry are: Mount Carmel Conference Center, Mount Carmel Summer Family Camp, Daily Texts, Walk Thru the Bible seminars, and Campus Ministry Community. $1000 11. The Shalom Ministry Team: will listen, advise, and offer help and understanding in seeking God’s direction for congregations in conflict with internal problems in the LCMC. All are volunteers who serve because of their love for Christ. A congregation in crisis or without a pastor is hurting. $1000 12. The World Mission Prayer League: is a Lutheran community in the mission of God. They are committed to some very simple ideas: the power of Christian community, the essential ministry of prayer, the adventure of pursuing a simplified lifestyle…and the urgent challenge of sharing the wonderful news about Jesus in the world. LWLC supports the Fernandez family in Bolivia. $6000 13. Youth Encounter: a Christian non-profit organization has been offering relational youth ministry resources to Christian communities for over 45 years. Rooted in the Christian Scriptures and shaped by the Lutheran tradition, Youth Encounter partners with Christian communities. $1000 14. LCMC Congregations: These monies help to establish and support new LCMC congregations. This continues a process that helped LWLC during our church infancy. The amount will probably be divided between four churches which will be determined throughout the year. $2000 15. An additional amount is available for benevolences if the projected annual receipts are met. $1500 Total Benevolence Giving $26,500

COUNCIL REPORT

LWLC building committee chairman,

Doyle Polson, reports that the architects and

general contractor have been asked to consider a

revised sequence of construction for our new

church. As reported earlier the funds raised to this

point fall short of the amount needed to begin

construction on phase one of the approved building

plan. The committee is cautiously optimistic that

this change will result in a recommendation to the

congregation to begin construction. As soon as

more information is available it will be shared with

the congregation.

The Library Committee has recently been

populated. The chair is Dodie Sorbel and the

secretary is Jane Osterberg . Other members

include Connie Berghuis, Cheryl Biggin, Sue

Christopher, Cindy Forbrook, Joyce Peterson and

Pat Shogren.

The congregation is reminded that in

January of each year there will be two openings on

most every committee because of the rotation

system adopted by the church council. This

provides many opportunities for members to get

involved. Time and talent sheets will be mailed to

every family in October and are always available

Sundays at the information table.

The Personnel Committee is pleased to

report that Roberta Rach has been hired to join the

LWLC Staff as the Financial Data Controller.

Roberta will be a valuable addition to our staff.

Saturday, April 28 marks the date of the

Augustana District Convention. Attendees from

LWLC will be Pastor A.J., Gaylen Lerohl, Paul and

Lynne Lommen and delegates Brad Forbrook and

Keith Redfield. Reports on this convention will be

made in May.
