    Jesus Paid It All

    (Isaiah 53:4-9)

    Introduction:

    (1) On May 10, 1940, after Winston Churchill became Prime Minister, he made an importantfirst speech to his Cabinet. When he met his Cabinet on May 13 he told them that "I havenothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat."

    (2) Memorial Day a day to honor are fallen soldiers. They are the ones who offered blood, toil, tears and sweat.

    (3) Jesus beat out Prime Minister Churchill by almost 2000 years as the One Who Authored blood, toil, tears, and sweat.

    Body:

    I. Jesus Offered His Blood.

    A. 1 Peter 1:18-19:

    18. knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited

    from your forefathers,

    19. but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.

    B. Jesus was 100% Divine, but also 100% Human. When He was nailed to the cross, Hesuffered as a human. Read 1 John 1:1 The Spirit that denies Jesus came in the flesh in theAntichrist (1 John 4:2-3).

    C. John 19:32-35

    32. So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him;

    33. but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.

    34. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

    35. And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that

    you also may believe.

The blood being shed, like the bones not being broken, is a fulfillment of OT prophecy (perhaps

John had in mind Exodus 12:1-14, that Jesus shed His blood as our Passover Lamb).D. Hebrews 9:22 without shedding of blood there is no remission of sins.

    II. Jesus Offered His Toil.

    A. John 9:4 I must work the works of Him Who sent Me

    B. Acts 1:1 all that Jesus began to do and teach

    C. He had a mission:

    1. Matt. 4:11-17.

    11. Then the devil *left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him.

    12. Now when Jesus heard that John had been taken into custody, He withdrew into Galilee;

    13. and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and

    Naphtali.

    14. This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet:

15."THE LAND OF ZEBULUN AND THE LAND OF NAPHTALI,BY THE WAY OF THE SEA, BEYOND THE JORDAN, GALILEE OF THE GENTILES --

    16. "THE PEOPLE WHO WERE SITTING IN DARKNESS SAW A GREAT LIGHT,AND THOSE WHO WERE SITTING IN THE LAND AND SHADOW OF DEATH,UPON THEM A LIGHT DAWNED."

    17. From that time Jesus began to preach and say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

    2. Matt. 10:5ff.

    5. These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them: "Do not go in the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter any

city of the Samaritans;6. but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

    7. "And as you go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'

    8. "Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give.

    9. "Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts,

    10. or a bag for your journey, or even two coats, or sandals, or a staff; for the worker is worthy of his support.

    3. Matt. 28:18-20.

    18. And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

    19. "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and

    the Holy Spirit,

    20. teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

    III. Jesus Offered His Tears.

    A. Matt. 23:27-29.

    37. "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to

gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.

    38. "Behold, your house is being left to you desolate!

    39. "For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, `BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME

    OF THE LORD !' "

    B. Luke 23:27-31.

    27. And following Him was a large crowd of the people, and of women who were mourning and lamenting Him.

    28. But Jesus turning to them said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, stop weeping for Me, but weep for yourselves and for

    your children.

    29. "For behold, the days are coming when they will say, `Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore,

and the breasts that never nursed.'

    30. "Then they will begin TO SAY TO THE MOUNTAINS, `FALL ON US,' AND TO THE HILLS, `COVER US.'

    31. "For if they do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?"

    C. John 11:35, 38

    35. Jesus wept.

    36. So the Jews were saying, "See how He loved him!"

    37. But some of them said, "Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind man, have kept this man also

    from dying?"

    38. So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, *came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying

    against it.

    IV. Jesus Offered His Sweat.

    A. Luke 22:44.

    44. And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon

    the ground.

    B. Imagine the ordeal on the cross, caused our Lord to sweat (if he had any fluid left in him bythen).

    Conclusion:

    (1) The song, Jesus paid it all.

    (2) He truly gave it all so that we might one day live with Him in heaven.

    (3) What does He require of us? Luke 9:23 take up our cross daily and follow Him. He doesntexpect anything of us that He wasnt willing to do Himself.

    (4) When the man asked Jesus in Matthew 22 what was the greatest commandment of the law,

our Lord replied to love God with all heart, soul, and mind. That requires our blood, toil, tears, and sweat. We may be required to pay with our life one day. But the promise for us is thatcrown of righteousness (2 Timothy 4:8).
