The Central Truth of the Christian Life Romans 1:16-17

Part Three An Essential Definition: The Gospel is the good news that God has made it possible for you to be forgiven of your sins and have an eternal relationship with God. This happens as we:

• Understand that you have sinned (Romans 3:23). • Believe that the penalty of sin is death (Romans 6:23). • Accept that Jesus died to pay the penalty for your sins (Romans 5:8). • Responds to these facts by repenting of your sins and trusting Jesus as your Lord

(Acts 20:21; Romans 10:9-10).

I. There is no reason to be ashamed of the gospel (16).

II. The gospel reveals the righteousness of God. (17a). A. Reveals means to attribute, ascribe, reckon or impute. B. The righteousness of God gives the idea righteousness from God. C. Therefore, the righteousness of God is imputed to us through the gospel.

III. Those who are righteous by faith shall live (17b).

A. A first step to understanding this crucial passage is to see if the Bible says the same thing in other places. 1. Habakkuk 2:4

2. Galatians 3:11-12 3. Hebrews 10:38

B. Consider the two ways to translate Romans 1:17.

1. The righteous __________________________________________

2. The righteous

__________________________________________

C. Define the words.

1. Righteousness _________________________________________

2. Faith

_________________________________________________ 3. Live

__________________________________________________

D. When you accept the Gospel, you receive _______________________ from God and then you will experience true _____________.

E. Since that is true, you then need to practice the mechanics of exercising faith.

1. Surrender yourself to God daily (Psalm 37:5).

2. Believe his promises (Acts 27:25). 3. Trust that what he says is true (Proverbs 3:5-6). 4. Obey him explicitly (Deuteronomy 13:14).
