Meet the Jetline teamMeeT The TeaM

This months edition we are pleased to introduce another two valued members of our team – Natalie Ford and Jade Chandler. Below you can find out a little more about them.

Well what a month it has been. I joined Jetline Cruise in October and

since then my feet have not touched the ground. Having worked closely

with Jetline Cruise over the past few years the opportunity arose to join

the family, and how could I resist. I started my career in the travel industry

over 10 years ago as a Lunn Poly Dolly, working my way through up the

ladder, I have in more recent years been lucky enough to work for brands

such as P&O Cruises, Cunard, Princess Cruises, Ocean Village and MSC

Cruises. This I believe has given me a fantastic grounding within the cruise

industry and has given me the perfect experience for my new role with

Jetline Cruise.

I have been lucky enough to travel the world, from the Far East to the

Caribbean experiencing different cultures and lifestyles along the way.

Travelling has always been a passion of mine and I can think of nothing

better than relaxing on a beautiful ship sailing in the South Pacific, well

this is the plan for my next cruise. It is an honour to now be part of the

Jetline Cruise team, we have a wealth of knowledge and expertise which

we can’t wait to share with you. I am sure I will get to speak with you in

the near future.

Happy cruising

Natalie

Hi I’m Jade. I am one of the new members of the Jetline team working in the

Jetline Call centre near Stansted Airport. I started working in the travel industry

originally at Thomson until I was made redundant. After this I worked for All

Saints Clothes shop, but I knew I wanted to get back into travel so jumped at

the chance to work for Jetline Cruise.

I’ve been working here for two months now, and am really pleased with how

it is going. We have recently been getting more intensive training on all of the

ships and their destinations so we have more information to help you book

your holiday! Last week we went to Southampton to visit the Independence

of the seas, before she set sail. We had a guided tour of the ship – we were

a little disappointed that the weather wasn’t great as we wanted to try out

the Flow rider!! We could not believe how big the ship was, when we drove

towards the port we didn’t realise it was a ship we thought it was a building!

The facilities on the ship are out of this world and there is something for

everyone on board. We were also lucky enough to experience the fine dining

on board with a beautiful three course meal that was served to us in the

amazing three tier restaurant – If you are also lucky enough to experience this

ship be sure to check out the grand chandelier in the middle of the restaurant!

We kept hoping they would not notice if we stayed on board to enjoy the

entire cruise – no such luck!

I look forward to speaking to you soon

cruise industry newsthe cruise industry is constantly evolving with cruise lines looking at ways to encourage more people to take a cruise holiday. with an ever growing number of cruise ships (currently around 300) in service and a rapidly increasing number of British cruisers – the uK market is attracting more interest globally from cruise lines. After north America the Brits are the next largest nationality of cruisers. with so much choice – here at jetline we are constantly striving to pick out cruise ideas that are different or filter out the cruises which offer the best value for money.

Master Appointed for Queen ElizabethCunard have recently announced that Captain Chris Wells, who joined Cunard as second officer on Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1992, has been appointed Master of the new 90,000-ton liner, Queen Elizabeth, which will enter service in October 2010. After joining Cunard and QE2, Captain Wells worked his way through the ranks to become staff captain. He later was seconded to the Queen Mary 2 New Build Team and spent 18 months at the St Nazaire shipyard. Having seen the ship develop from the beginning and bringing her into service as Staff Captain, Captain Wells was extremely proud when appointed to the command of Queen Mary 2 last year. Peter Shanks, President and Managing Director of Cunard Line says: “It is a well deserved honour for Captain Wells to be appointed Master of Queen Elizabeth. He will be a fine leader for all of our colleagues working with him on Queen Elizabeth. His experience on both QE2 and Queen Mary 2 will ensure he continues the famous traditions of Cunard Line”. Commenting on his appointment, Captain Wells says: “Bringing Queen Elizabeth up Southampton Water to her home port will be one of the proudest moments of my life, and I very much hope that the people of Southampton and beyond will take the ship to their hearts as they have all the Cunard Queens since Queen Mary was launched in 1934; Queen Elizabeth certainly follows in that great tradition’.

Thomson Dream will become the flagship for the Thomson cruises fleet when she launches in May 2010 with itineraries departing from Palma, Mallorca. In June and September the ship will be exclusively for adults and all year round there will be an adults only section on board. Thomson Dream will become Thomson’s largest ship with around 1500 passengers and 600 crew. Learn more about the prices and itineraries at Thomson Cruises from one of our Cruise Specialists at Jetline.

Thomson Dream has been purchased from Costa Cruises and was known as Costa Europa but will undergo an extensive refurbishment before she starts sailing for Thomson.

Manchester loses transatlantic serviceUS carrier, Delta Airlines is withdrawing flights from Manchester to New York from January 8th 2010. The airline has been operating the route since 2006 and uses a 174-seat Boeing 757 to provide a daily service.

A spokeswoman said the decision to drop the route had been taken following an analysis of the airline’s network which found demand dropping over the winter. However, Delta will continue to maintain a year-round Manchester-Atlanta service operated by a 214-seat Boeing 767.

This is a further loss to Manchester Airport following British Airways cancelling it’s daily flight to New York last year and Bmi withdrawing all its transatlantic flights from Manchester over the past 12 months.

Ports more important than sea days

Port visits are more important than days at sea, according to research from the UK’s second largest cruise line and as a result Thomson Cruises and Island Cruises will include more fly-cruises in its 2010 programme.

Thomson will also offer weddings at sea in the Caribbean for winter

2010/11 to expand it’s continually growing portfolio and both brands will be offering ‘test-drives’ to other Thomson and First Choice holidaymakers when ships dock in ports that are also used as beach resorts by the operators.

Online access is currently paid for on cruises but from 2010 Thomson Cruises will offer free internet service on board for passengers who want to blog about their experiences. The line’s five ships cover 130 ports of call and carry more than 200,000 passengers a year.

Details of cruises to run from seven UK ports next year have been released by new company Cruise & Maritime Voyages in a first edition preview brochure for 2010 covering 46 departures on two ships, the Marco Polo and Ocean Countess.

The programme covers departures from London Tilbury, Hull, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Leith, Greenock, Liverpool and Plymouth with the 800-passenger Marco Polo based out of Tilbury and the 800-passenger Ocean Countess offering regional departures from all seven ports.

Sales manager Michelle Daniels commented “We are firmly committed to increasing our level of sales through the retail travel trade and have a full promotional support package available to help travel agents develop local, regional and national opportunities.”

Marco Polo will start its season as a child-free cruise ship on January 2, 2010 with a 30-night cruise from Tilbury to the Caribbean with fares

from £1,499 per person. This will be followed by an Amazon & Orinoco Discovery voyage in February and a cruise in March to Northern Norway in search of the Aurora Borealis natural light display that can only be observed close to the Polar Regions.

The rest of the year’s programme will comprise a selection of six to 15-night cruises to destinations including the British Isles, Norwegian Fjords, Spitzbergen, Baltic Capitals, Mediterranean and Canary Islands. A six-night Fjordland cruise starts at £399 per person and a 14 night Northern Lights cruise from £849 per person.

Ocean Countess enters service in April 2010 following a winter refurbishment of cabins and public rooms to provide a “value for money traditional cruising experience”. The vessel will sail to Norway, the North Cape, Iceland, the British Isles and Spain and Portugal from UK regional ports with a two night mini-cruise to Amsterdam starting from only £149 per person.

Travel Trade targeted by new UK cruise venture

What is the growth rate of the cruise industry – some interesting facts and figures! The cruise industry is the most exciting growth category in the entire leisure market. Since 1980, the industry has had an average annual passenger growth rate of 8.1% per annum, while this has slowed since the global economic downturn the cruise industry as a whole has many new and large ships on order and under construction.

The UK saw a 12% growth in cruise passenger numbers during 2006, and even more impressively a 19% growth in cruise nights booked in 2006. In 2007 in the UK, the fly-cruise market increased by 13% to 753,000 passengers. The continued growth in cruise holidays is all the more impressive when seen in context against the stagnation facing the overall package holiday market which, since peaking at more than 20.6m foreign inclusive holidays sold in 2002 has slipped back 8% to less than 19m in 2006. The cruise industry’s share of this market has increased 65% in five years and doubled over 10 years and in 2006 one in every 16 package holidaymakers chose a cruise. By 2008 The PSA reported that the UK cruise market hat hit 1.5 million passengers with 577,000 passengers taking an cruise from the UK and 900,000 passengers from Britain choosing to take a fly-cruise.

Niche segments are growing at an even faster pace, The eleven Specialist Cruise Collection members offer itineraries that focus on the destination rather than the onboard experience and visit exotic places best experienced by sea, such as the Galapagos, Antarctica, the Arctic Circle including Greenland, Iceland and Norwegian Fjords, East Timor, Papua New Guinea and the remote Kimberly region of Australia.

I have always found it hard to believe how good quality and hot food can possibly be served in the main dining room in such vast quantities, in such a short space of time and at sea!

I recently had the pleasure of completing my 3rd Transatlantic crossing on the Queen Mary 2 and each time I have been equally impressed with the quality and choice of food on board in each of the four Kings Court self service (buffet style) restaurants. Particularly as it caters for my personal palette – which I am sad to say it typically British.

in other words: • A nice cup of tea when I want it.

• A good ole British banger for breakfast

• Proper Fish N Chips with Mushy peas - only cod will do; no Pollocks here!!!

• Mint Sauce with your roast lamb

• Crispy crackling on your roast pork

• Horseradish sauce and Yorkshire Pudding with your roast beef.

• A chicken Chow Mein and fried rice

• A beef curry late at night after the night club.

Behind the Scenes by martin tanner

Dining on board Qm2

But also for the wonderfully exotic dishes served on board which I would not normally have at home. This is no surprise as in the Kings Court you can see the food being prepared, heated and displayed – where the passengers select what they want.

But in the main dining room where dishes are cooked to order and chosen from comprehensive menus by the diners; then served by waiters for some mystical source – I have always wondered how they do it. On this last cruise we were fortunate to be invited to visit the kitchen - and before you say anything I was not asked to do the dishes.

We left the sumptuous surroundings of the Britannia restaurant through automatic revolving doors for another world. This world is a clinical and an extremely clean stainless steel one with 150 chefs serving 16000 meals per day. The kitchen (or galley) is 2500 sq metres and has up and down escalators to take waiters to the second floor of the Britannia restaurant with heavy laden trays. The whole galley and dining operation is supported by a team of 85 dishwashers, pot washers and galley cleaners working around the clock.

Four automatic dishwashers clean 87,000 items per day. All fresh water on board is made from desalinated seawater and is perfectly safe to drink.

Three machines process 600 tonnes of seawater per day to produce the equivalent of 250 litres of freshwater per passenger per day consumed on board ship.

1200 main courses are served within an hour on each of two sittings. The food is prepared early on in the day and cooked to a certain point. It is then finished off just before service. Each time a particular dish is ordered - it is entered onto a computerised meal counter so that chefs can keep track of what has been ordered and what has yet to be served. Salads and cold dishes are prepared, plated and stored on huge racks then refrigerated. Each course has its own preparation and serving area which looks rather like a self service canteen.

The Queen Mary 2 has the capacity to store 12 days of fruit and vegetables at various stages of ripeness and 3 weeks capacity for meat. Pork and Lamb are always supplied from the UK and Beef comes from the USA. No matter where the ship is in the world meat is always shipped from the same suppliers.

There is also a printers on board so that menus can be adjusted according to what is available and in case things run out. Apparently the biggest disaster imaginable in the kitchen is if they run out of rice - as the majority of the crew would not be happy!

Martin Tanner, our product and Marketing Manager at Jetline Cruise recently had a visit aboard Queen Mary 2 to see behind the scenes in the kitchens. Below you can read all about what he found out - its enough to make your mouth water!

A chef prepares some dessertsThe Britannia RestaurantA warm welcome awaits you

Menus are put together a couple of weeks before the cruise specifically to cater for the mix of nationalities on board. Hence why I like the food on Transatlantic crossings.

• 120 Pizzas are consumed each day

• 700 English Scones are served during afternoon tea in the Queens Room and Queens Grill lounge

• 9500 Canapes are consumed through the voyage

• Over 8000 linen napkins are used and laundered each day

• 6000 cups of tea are served daily

• Almost 610 miles of cling film is used on board each year.

after this last cruise and following the tour of the kitchen my opinion of main dining on ships has changed. The food was hot and tasty & there were lots of dishes on the menus which I could not decide on. Quite often I had two starters and a main course or even one of the entrees as a starter. Sometimes I would mix the vegetables from one entrée with the meat from another. Despite the varied demands of the diners and the unimaginable combinations of food – it was no problem for the Queen Mary 2 Galley team and always delivered in fine dining style.

Take a look at the sample menu above from one of the evenings on board.

TICKETS & CRUISE DOCUMENTATION

E-TICKETS

A few years back Airlines adopted e-tickets which is a piece of paper with your booking details on and your E-ticket number. This piece of paper is simply handed to the person at the check in desk instead of tickets. In most cases the check in desk will only ask for your passport as they can find the details on their reservation system.

As a result what now constitutes your flight ticket is simply a printed piece of paper which we can e-mail to you. Quite often you can check in on line before you travel direct with the airline you are flying on and also prebook your seat numbers at the same time. With many – this can only be done within 24 hours of departure. To do this you will need the Airline’s flight reference (locator number) which may be different to the one you were given at the time of booking.

In the same way - what represents vouchers for hotels, tours and transfers are also printed pieces of paper which we can e-mail to you.

LUGGAGE ALLOWANCES ON FLIGHTS

Unfortunately these vary wildly between airlines, destinations and flight tickets.

Please check with our sales team at the time of booking. The info below is for general guidance only and not exact.

For low cost airlines such as Easyjet, Flybe, Aer Lingus, BMI Baby and Rynair there is always an extra charge for checked baggage and a limitation on hand luggage. In the case of Easyjet this is £6pp each way for a case weighing no more than 20KG (44lbs) – we usually include this charge as part of the Fare quoted.

For international flights on the main airlines such as BA, Virgin, American Airlines, Delta, Continental etc and also on Air Transat and Thomas Cook to Canada the allowance is usually 20Kg (44lbs) for checked baggage and 5-6KG (11-13lbs) for hand luggage.

For domestic flights within the United States the hand luggage allowance is usually very generous at around 18KG (40lbs) plus a personal item. But there may be a charge for checked baggage going in the hold of the aircraft usually a maximum of 30KG (65lbs) for a charge of around $20.

If domestic flights are booked with an international flight there is usually no charge for checked baggage.

Should you go over the luggage allowance booked then airlines will charge extortionate sums – in some cases as much as £10 per Kg (2.2lbs) over.

It would seem that November and December are busy months for our members going on a cruise holiday. These larger numbers of departures have unfortunately coincided with the recent postal strikes and have created a bit of a backlog. If you have experienced any delay in receiving your tickets and cruise documentation thank you for your patience. Here at Jetline we are working hard to get your tickets to you in time. at the time of writing this article our administration team have now sent out all tickets for departures up to 15th November and are fast catching up.

ACCESS TO THE INTERNET

For many people receiving tickets and vouchers by e-mail is extremely convenient and saves a lot of time. We always ask at the time of enquiry and booking if you have an e-mail address so that we can send travel documents by e-mail.

However we recognise that some people prefer to receive hard copies of documents and others have no access to the internet or are not happy using the internet. If this is the case please do not hesitate to call one of our dedicated cruise agents on:

For most cruise lines you now have the option of completing these details on line rather than completing hard copies and sending them through the post.

Hard copies of cruise documentation are usually sent to us by the cruise lines approximately 3 weeks before departure of the ship and not the flight (if you have one as part of your arrangements). Therefore under normal circumstances you should expect to receive your cruise documentation collated with any flight tickets (E-TICKETS) and hotel vouchers around two weeks before departure. If you require your tickets any earlier than this please let us know in good time and we will endeavour to arrange an earlier despatch.

Currently the following cruise lines will send hard copies of cruise documentation by post:

• CUNARD

• P&O

• Royal Caribbean International

• Norwegian Cruise Lines

• Celebrity Cruises

• Azamara cruises

• MSC Cruises

Due to the environmental impact caused by the excessive amount of paper used for cruise documentation all cruise lines will be introducing an electronic ticket policy in the near future – similar to airlines. Indeed Princess have already done so (SEE BELOW). As your cruise specialist we are committed to ensuring that these changes made by cruise lines to ticketing policy do not affect your holiday experience. As always we are here to assist and address any concerns you may have.

PRINCESS CRUISES

This is the first cruise line to adopt an electronic ticketing policy and as such will no longer be sending out hard copies of cruise documentation. Outlined below are instructions for you to follow to access your Princess cruise documents:

Visit www.princess.com click on “prepare for your cruise” (located at the top of the page).

1. Enter your first name, surname and reference number

2. Go to the bottom of the page- read and accept terms & conditions

3. click Proceed

4. complete the passenger immigration in order to print out your boarding pass.

You will be supplied with luggage labels on arrival at the port to attach to your luggage - where you can write your stateroom number on them before handing to the porters.

We hope this answers any questions you may have about your tickets and alleviate any concerns in the run up to your cruise holiday.

Holland America is one of the best kept secrets of the cruising world in the UK. We consider Holland America to be one of the best of what we call the 5 cruising brands. Their modern fleet of cruise ships are spacious, have less passengers onboard relative to their size, are tastefully decorated and furnished. Having travelled on the Eurodam we were impressed with the layout, style and use of teak decking around the pool areas. Holland America ships have two pool areas – one at the back for incredible sailaway vistas and another Lido style area in the middle with a retractable glass roof for year round sunbathing and fun! They also have some of the best spas at sea with a wonderful hydro therapy pool and thermal suite relaxation lounge. There is also a theatre, casino, numerous bars, Crows Nest nightclub, Retreat cabana area, Explorations Café, kids clubs and more.

The Eurodam is the most recent addition to the fleet (last year) and is also the largest at just over 86,000 tonnes. More importantly this is the first Signature class ship with little touches that enhance your cruising experience such as full divan beds, fluffy bathrobes and daily fruit baskets. Also standard Balcony staterooms have bathtubs! Plus this ship has some great works of art to marvel at whilst walking around and the Pinnacle Grill is excellent - well worth the few extra pounds cover charge. Other dining options include the Rembrandt main dining room where you can opt for “As You Wish” dining, The Lido for daytime buffets or informal waiter service dining at night. We must also mention the beautiful and tranquil Tamarind Far Eastern style restaurant with its adjacent Silk Den lounge and panoramic views.

Our Queen Mary 2 offers below are based on the first leg of her world cruise leaving New York for Southampton on the 4th January. We have combined this with 2 hotel options to take advantage of New Year in New York and / or the chance to shop in the post Christmas sales and not worry about weight restrictions on your journey home. Plus what better way to return home after your heady celebrations than to pamper yourself on a relaxing iconic crossing back to Blighty.

If you enjoy your days at sea on a regular cruise or you can’t stand the thought of a tiring overnight flight home from the States then this cruise is one for you. If you lead a busy life at work or at home then give yourself a treat and let someone else do all the work. Without any interruptions of ports of call – these 7 nights are for a total chill out time. After the first day at sea for most people doing their first Transatlantic crossing the over whelming comment is: “This is the first time I have felt completely relaxed”.

10-12 night fly-cruises aboard

This exciting offer combines 3 nights hotel stay in Toronto with a trip to Niagara Falls, a visit to New York and a 6 or 7 night classic Trans atlantic crossing between New York & Southampton on the Queen Mary 2.

ToroNTo: Fly direct from Gatwick to Toronto for 3 nights hotel stay. Toronto has a great range of shops (the undercover Eaton Centre is a must) and excellent restaurants – we recommend the Spaghetti Factory. No visit to Toronto is complete without a visit to the CN Tower with panoramic views over the city and across Lake Ontario.

NIAGArA FALLS: A full day escorted coach tour is included to Niagara Falls with free time to explore Niagara. Check out the casino and a relaxing walk along the promenade next to Niagara River is an excellent photo opportunity for the falls. There is a FREE trip on the famous Maid of the Mist - where you will be supplied with a blue mac to take you on a breathtaking mini cruise into the plumes at the base of the falls. On the way back there is a stop at the mighty Whirlpool rapids, a journey through picturesque Niagara on the Lake and a visit to a winery to see how Ice wine is produced.

NEW YorK: At the end of your Toronto stay fly direct to New York and stay for 1 night in a central Manhattan hotel. Take advantage of some frenzied shopping, have fresh pasta for lunch in the food court at Macys and watch the sunset from the top of the Empire State Building. Take a morning stroll in Central Park before loading yourself and all of your purchases onto the Queen Mary 2.

QUEEN mArY 2: Departing from New York is memorable as you pass the Statue of Liberty and the picturesque New York skyline fades into the distance behind the wake of the ship.

Have late mornings in bed with room service to get you going. A leisurely breakfast, a stroll on deck and perhaps a lecture from one of the guest speakers on board. An afternoon pint in the pub, a wallow in the Canyon Ranch Spa, then an aperitif in the Chart room before dinner. Try your hand in the Casino after the theatre then round the night off in the very stylish Commodore Club for a night cap. By the end of your voyage you will wonder where the time has gone and will be reluctant to disembark.

The itinerary operates in reverse with Westbound cruises from Southampton to New York and an overnight flight home from Toronto.

This ship is ideal for cruiser / theme park / beachgoer type with the biggest wow factor of anything seen so far. This floating resort is a must Do for anyone who loves being on a ship-look out for the following things to do on board: central Park with its gardens, restaurants and bars. This is one of our favourite cruise itineraries in the Mediterranean cruising from our favourite port. a short flight takes you to romantic and extremely picturesque Venice; which has one of the best city sailaways in the Med - as the ship glides past Saint Marks Square on its way out to sea. This mixed with the charm and varied beauty of the Greek islands makes a perfect Summer cruise. We always feel it is a shame to sail from Venice and not actually stay there; so with this offer we have included an overnight hotel stay.

We have chosen 3 star hotels close to Saint Marks Square and are within easy strolling distance of all the historical sights and the Rialto bridge. This area is also well connected by the relatively inexpensive water bus which also operates a service to the cruise terminal.

16 night fly-cruise aboard Golden Princess

The word is out and our best selling offer is now a target for Princess cruises. As so many of our members have recognised this to be such a bargain – Princess cruises are beginning to increase prices. So we have now included departures up to the end of next year to give you more chance to book before they put the prices up.

For many forty somethings Hawaii initially conjures up images of Magnum PI and red Ferraris. For Fifty somethings Steve Garret and Hawaii Five O are frantically canoeing though the surf, whilst sixty somethings may think of Elvis in his film Blue Hawaii and Rockahula. Most though think of exotic Hula girls, Lei Garlands, swaying palms and magnificent sunsets. Perhaps visit Pearl Harbour and the Arizona monument and take a stroll along Waikiki beach on Oahu. Visit the pineapple plantations of Maui, the Wailua Falls and Nawiliwili harbour of Kauai and a Volcano adventure on the Big Island. Or simply have a Luau – an Hawaiian version of a BBQ but much more colourful and fun!
