Sir Alex Ferguson

1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . At the end of the 2012/2013 football season, Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement as manager of Manchester United, one of the most famous football teams in the world. He began his managerial career at Manchester United in 1986, and during the next 26 years he justifiably earned the title of being the most successful manager ever in British football. Under his guidance the team won nearly 40 trophies, not only frequently being winners of the British Premier League, but also winning European trophies, and, in 2008, Manchester United won the FIFA Club World Cup.

2 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Like many football managers Sir Alex, who was born in Scotland, had a successful career as a player before moving into management. His early years were spent in Scotland, where he played for teams such as Glasgow Rangers, Dunfermline, Falkirk and Ayr United. He then moved into coaching, and eventually became the manager of Aberdeen Football Club. This was where he first made his name as a manager, leading Aberdeen to win three Scottish titles, four Scottish cups and also the European Cup Winners’ Cup. With these successes he moved the centre of Scottish football away from Glasgow to Aberdeen.

3 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . When he took over at Manchester United the club was suffering from a run of defeats, and was near the bottom of Division One, with the risk of dropping into Division Two. His first challenge was simply to keep the team in Division One, and to move the team up the league table. This was going to take time, as Sir Alex needed to build a team, bring in new talented players and develop the skills of young players. However, the first sign of Manchester United’s new period of success came within three years of his appointment as manager, when the club won the FA Cup – a cup he was to win no less than five times!

One reason for Sir Alex’s success is his ability to spot talented players, and to help them develop. One of the most famous of English footballers, David Beckham, spent a long period of time at Manchester United, and more recently such well-known players as Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Ronaldo and Van Persie have all played for the club. He inspired loyalty from his players, but also expected hard work and commitment. Players who were not prepared to adapt to his firm style of management soon found themselves dropped from the team, and being sold to other clubs.

When Sir Alex reached the normal retirement age of 65, he showed no sign of wanting to leave, and seemed as ambitious for success as at any time in his career. By then Manchester United had established themselves as either winners or runners up of the Premier League (as the former Division One was now called), winning in 2007, 2008, 2009, runners up in 2010, winning again in 2011, runners up in 2012, and winners again in 2013. It was only when the club had won the 2013 championship that he announced he would retire at the end of that football season. Later it was agreed that, in retirement, he would take up a position on the Manchester United board, and also act as an adviser and as an ambassador for the club.

Farm shop

Darren Edwards and his wife, Liz, were tired of their life in the city, going to an office

every day, travelling long distances to work, and returning home late in the evening.

So, when their first child, Oliver, was born, they decided to sell their house in London,

and move to the countryside. They started a new life in the north of England, living

on the edge of a village. Darren, who grew up on a farm, spends his days growing

vegetables and looking 31 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . a small herd of cows and some

PART SEVEN

Read the following passage and then answer the questions, selecting True (A), False (B) or Not Mentioned in Text (C). Mark your answers on your answer sheet.

The house martin

One of the best-loved birds in England is the house martin, easily identified by the nests this bird builds under the roofs of houses. The house martin is a member of the swallow family, and has white tail feathers and blue-black feathers on its back, which makes it easy to recognise when it is flying.

The house martin’s distinctive nests are made from mud, grass and small roots, and the house martins are extremely skilful builders. They scoop damp mud from the edge of ponds and puddles and quickly make a small cup-shaped nest, sticking the grass and roots together with the mud. The nest, when completed, sticks firmly to the side of a house. The top of the nest is protected by the tiles of the roof, and the birds get in and out through a small hole at the top. The inside of the nest is lined with feathers.

The house martin does not live in England all year round, but spends the cooler winter months elsewhere in Europe, in countries to the south, and also in Africa. They come to England in April, and almost immediately start building their nests, often returning every year to the same place, and – indeed – to the same building. No sooner have they completed the nest than the female will lay eggs and then both birds share the task of sitting on the eggs until the young birds hatch out – within 14 days of being laid.

The parent birds share the job of feeding their young, which are usually fed on insects. The young birds normally fly within another 22 days, and then the female will lay a second batch of eggs, and raise a second family in one summer. It has even been known for some house martins to raise three families in one summer, before they fly off in October to warmer countries for the winter.

As well as nesting on houses, house martins also nest on cliff edges, and sometimes they also nest in large colonies on the edge of caves. Fifty years ago there were large nesting colonies in Yorkshire, Derbyshire and some places in Wales, but the colonies have decreased in size over the years, and there are now some fears that house martins are dying out in England, and may soon become extinct.

46 House martins are not very popular in England.

Read the text ‘Recycling your waste’, then answer the questions on the next page by selecting A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on your answer sheet.

Recycling your waste

ALL households within the local area are supplied with three bins: –blue-lid bin; black-lid bin and green-lid bin.

Blue-lid binThis bin is for mixed paper, folded cardboard, plastic bags, bottles, and other glass containers, food and drink cans, foil trays, drink cartons, aerosols.Paper and cardboard should be placed within the fitted box under the lid; this will keep it separate from other waste, so that it remains clean and dry. If you have too much paper it can be placed in a clean plastic bag, which should be left beside the blue-lid bin on collection day.

Green-lid binThis bin is for garden waste – grass cuttings, dead leaves and flowers; plants, shrub and hedge clippings, twigs and bark.

PLEASE NOTE – NO FOOD WASTE SHOULD BE PLACED IN THIS BIN.

Black-lid binThis is for non-recyclable and non-garden waste. This bin should only be used for waste that cannot be put into the blue-lid bin, the green-lid bin or the food caddy.

Every household will also have a small food bin, or food caddy. This caddy will be collected EVERY week. Householders will be provided with a roll of bin liners for use with these caddies. All food waste should be put into the caddy, and the lid should be kept in the closed and locked position (i.e. with the handle in the vertical position). To open the food caddy, lower the handle to a horizontal position, and lift the lid. Do not leave your food caddy in direct sunlight; instead keep it in a shady place, with the handle in the locked position so animals cannot get into it.

The food caddy should ONLY be used for food waste; all other waste should be put into the other bins, according to the instructions above.

***Your collection day is now MONDAY (except when Monday is a National holiday, when it will be Tuesday)***

All your collections will be made on the same day of the week. One week your black-lid bin will be collected, and the following week the blue-lid and green-lid bins will be collected. Your food caddy will be collected every week.

ALL the bins have wheels; they should be wheeled to the edge of your property, ready for collection BEFORE 07.00 on the day of collection.

For disposal of large items, such as furniture, unwanted fridges and cookers, etc. please contact your local council office.
