HOLIDAY GRADE

This is a Grade 5/SS/P holiday and features some full and half day walks with generally moderate amounts of ascent anddescent. The paths are mostly good, but there will be some steep, uneven and rough ground as we explore archaeological sitesand follow Bedouin paths. Some days will be dedicated solely to sightseeing or include an element of sightseeing, and ourtransfers between centres will include walks where possible. Generally we’ll walk between 2.5 hours- 5 hours a day, up to12kms (8 miles) and an ascent/descent up to 400m. One of our days at Petra is top of the grade and ascends up to 750m,taking up to seven hours. While some walks appear shorter than others, it is the weather and terrain that determines thegrade. Also designated a Pioneer holiday, this programme offers a more adventurous itinerary, off the beaten track, exploringlesser known corners. Local events may require amendments to the programme, sometime at short notice.

Our bottom line is happy travellers, and to that end we trust our tour leaders to use the itinerary below as a basis for providingyou with a great holiday. We expect our leaders to make adjustments to the itinerary if the weather, group ability or other localconditions make that necessary. There are normally more options available to our leaders than those listed below and one ormore of these options may well be chosen. All distances, heights & timings are approximate.

Day 4

Dana

From Amman, we travel south to Dana with a beautiful and dramatic walk en route (approx. 3-4 hours over rocky ground)starting at the hot springs of Ibn Hammad. We’ll enter a sandstone gorge of abundant vegetation and hanging gardens. Youshould expect to get your shoes wet as much of the walking is in a perennial stream. En route to Dana, we make a stop at thecrusader castle of kerak. We overnight at Dana for one night.

Day 5

Feynan

We’ll take a hike from the Nature Reserve to Feynan and stay at the Feynan Eco Lodge for 1 night’s accommodation. Thenature reserve encompasses some of Jordan’s most breathtaking scenery, and became the Kingdom’s sixth wildlife reserve in1990, thereby protecting all animals — including endangered species such as the ibex. The rst hour of the walk is the thesteepest and walking poles maybe useful. 14kms (9 miles); ascent 100m, descent 1000m; 5 hours. Our accommodation atDana is a ne example of an eco experience using solar power, sourcing local ingredients for meals where possible andemploying local villagers to work in the Lodge. Watching the sunset and evening star gazing are perfect ways to end the day.

Day 6

Wadi Rum

We  explore  the  area around  Feynan  lodge,  which  was  a  big  copper mining and smelting area during the Roman era. Weexplore the remains as well as hike in the dramatic desert, Jordan Valleys and nearby Wadi Ghweir. We walk  for  about  2-4 hours,  depending  on  group tness and ability.  Up to 200 m ascent/ descent. En route  to  Wadi  Rum,  we  may  have  time for  a  short stop  in  Aqaba.  We  change  from  the  coach  to  jeeps for  the  journey  across  the  sand  dunes  to  our Bedouin camp  for  our  night  under  the  stars.  The colours of the desert change as the sun sets and the stars  come  out.  Dinner, which  has  been  cooked underground,  over  hot  charcoals,  is  eaten  around the camp re. An extraordinary experience!

Currency in Jordan

Jordanian Dinar (JOD)

The Dinar is divided into 100 piastres or 1000 ls. It is possible to obtain Jordanian Dinar before you leave the UK. Pleasecheck with your bank or nearest Foreign Exchange. ATM machines are available in Amman, Madeba & Petra. Please checkwith your bank prior to travelling that you will be able to use your card overseas. Cash can be withdrawn from inside thebanks, but they are only open from 08.30 – 13.00 when you will usually be out with the group. They are closed on Fridays.

The simplest way to exchange cash is to take Sterling currency or U.S. Dollars, and change at the hotels or Exchange Centres.Travellers’ cheques can be difcult to cash due to the bank opening hours and none of the hotels on the tour will cashtravellers’ cheques. We suggest taking a small amount of cash to exchange and to use this in conjunction with your debit andcredit cards (which are accepted in the major centres, although few of our accommodations will accept credit cards).

TippingAs you are probably already aware, tipping or “backsheesh” is a way of life in the Middle East. In order to take the hassle out oftipping, we strongly recommend that you allow your leader to take care of making sure tips are given to hotel and restaurantstaff & to local guides and drivers. This will be done using some funds provided by Ramblers Walking Holidays plus acontribution from you, which your leader will collect during the holiday. We suggest an amount of £25-£30 per person for this.A small tip is usually required for the use of toilets and any drinks and meals you purchase yourself.

This list is not exhaustive and every walker is different and may have their own preference.

Extra Jordan InformationIn addition to the basic kit list noted above, you will benet on bringing extra footwear for our Ibn Hammad walk. Dependingon the rainfall, you may nd yourself walking in an ankle deep (or possible higher) water. If you have walking sandals, trainersor quick drying sneakers, these will do well. Don't forget your torch and towel for stays at the camps, and women should bringa scarf that covers their head and shoulders to cover when visiting religious sites and as good protection from the sun. You willnd the black and white check scarves, worn by the local population, sold almost everywhere in Amman and at Jerash andthese will be perfect for protecting your head and shoulders.

Jordan is a conservative society and foreigners are received more respectfully when they dress modestly. In general, andespecially at religious sites, men should wear long trousers, with shoulders and upper arms covered, while ladies should weartrousers or below the knee skirts.  Lightweight cotton clothes will be suitable.  Long sleeves and loose clothing is also goodprotection against the sun. When staying in Petra, and while on walks in the wadis, the attitude to dress is more relaxed, andhere shorts may be acceptable. Your leader will give you further advice.

For overnight stays at the camps and at the Feynan Eco-lodge you will need to have an overnight bag, as you will not be ableto take your suitcases with you. Your main luggage will be safely stored and you will have access to your main luggage eachmorning. The overnight bag is in addition to your day pack.

Diarrhoea & Boiled WaterDon’t forget to exercise caution with what you eat to avoid upset stomachs and stay away from unpeeled fruit and vegetables, salad and do not have ice in your drinks. Hot, fresh cooked food, where possible, is best.

Hand washing facilities may be poor or unavailable when travelling, we therefore strongly advise you to carry antibacterialsanitizing gel and / or hand wipes at all times and use to them regularly.

Drinking or cleaning teeth in un-boiled water is not recommended.  Bottled pure water is inexpensive and widely available inshops, at hotels, and on the coach. Make sure you only buy sealed bottles.

You must be adequately insured to join our holidays. We do not insist that you insure with us but we require that you areadequately insured for the nature of your holiday. Your policy should also provide adequate cover for the activities, includedand optional, you are likely to participate in during your holiday.

Whoever you insure with, please ensure that you take full details, and ideally the policy itself, with you on holiday and provideour tour leader with your insurer's name, the policy number and emergency assistance contact numbers.

Please note that it is very difcult to obtain travel insurance once your holiday arrangements have started.

Responsible TravelWe're committed to ethical tourism in all our destinations. Our holidays are designed for you to discover the essence of thecountry you are visiting. Travelling in small groups not only gives you an up close and personal experience of your destination, but minimises your impact on the immediate environment. We feel that the most important starting point to protect theenvironment is to be out in it. For more details visit our website.

The Ramblers Holidays Charitable TrustUnlike many tour operators we have our own trust through which RWH Travel’s prots are channelled back into a variety ofoutdoor, walking-related or environmental conservation projects in the UK. The focus of the Trust’s nancial support is Britain’sleading walking charity, The Ramblers, and their role in promoting the benets and importance of walking to the British public. In addition the Trust welcomes applications for small grants from local organisations in the UK who need support for walking-orientated activities. This includes the establishment of footpaths and bridleways, funding for rebuilding bridges andrenovating huts, as well as bursary funding for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for children who could not otherwise afford todo it. Please visit the ‘About Us’ section of our website and click on the Charitable Trust link for more details.

Heart and SoleWe appreciate that we are in a fortunate position to be able to use our prots to help make a difference to people's lives. Heart& Sole is a venture managed by our ofce staff, whose aim is to reach the heart of the communities in the countries we visit.Through Heart & Sole, we hope to make more of a long term, direct impact to these communities, particularly in less developedcountries where even a small amount goes a long way.
