Jewish tradition celebrates life, and even in bleak times for our people,
music, study and art were valued and those pursuits continued. Our Jewish Community is a vibrant one and each of our local agencies and synagogues offer Arts and Cultural programs that celebrate life, art, history, and culture. A wide range of activities take place in the areas of theatre, visual arts, music, lectures and Jewish cultural activities.
Theatre & Film The Alpert Jewish Community Center (AJCC) is host to a wide variety of Jewish Arts & Culture programs for children, teens and adults. In their youth department, classes are offered in theatre, art, dance and writing. Each summer, teens are involved in the Michael Stuhlbarg Summer Stock program in which they are cast in a full production of a Broadway play. This summer they will present the full version of Grease. There are also community theatre programs for adults. Most recently this past spring they presented the musical Working. Each fall, the Long Beach Jewish Film Festival brings to our community the best in Jewish Films from around the world. This year’s festival will debut on October 22, 23, 25 & 26. The Opening Night event will once again be presented by the Jewish Federation on October 22 and is generously sponsored by Gelson’s.
Visual Art The Zena & Pauline Gatov Gallery, which is housed in the Lentzner Family Promenade of the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus, is the site of ongoing art exhibits curated by the AJCC. Through the AJCC Gottlieb Youth Art Show and the Evva Vale College Art Exhibit, budding art students in middle school, high school and college are offered the chance to display their work through two unique endowed art exhibits. The gallery is also the viewing place for many local Jewish artists and traveling art shows and exhibits. On permanent exhibit is the Max Gatov Mezuzah Display. Temple Israel, through its Joys of Jewish Learning program, was fortunate to have artist-in-residence Mordechai Rosenstein spend a dynamic weekend with them in January, sharing his love for art and Jewish tradition. During his time there, Rosenstein created an original painting for the congregation based on one of our core values, hachnasat orchim (hospitality). He also spent time with the Torah Center students, teaching them about the history of Jewish art and painting, and sharing his stories of inspiration and creativity. Beach Hillel celebrated its annual Israel Week this year to honor Israel’s 66th birthday. They believe that one avenue of gathering support for the Jewish state is through art. On day four

Symphony’s principal cellist Cécilia Tsan, who has played Kol Nidre at the temple’s High Holy Days services for many years. Congregants, Jewish community members, and members of the larger Long Beach community joined together for a glorious afternoon of music, learning, and camaraderie. Temple Israel’s journey into the Jewish arts continued in April, as they partnered with the Long Beach Opera and brought their travelling Opera@School performance of The Diary of Anne Frank composed by Grigori Frid, to their Torah Center middle school students, parents, and community at large. Along with an interactive workshop introducing students to opera, audience members thoroughly enjoyed the engaging and moving
performance of The Diary. At Congregation Shir Chadash, there is a monthly music program called Kol Kolot, as Rabbi Laibson remarked, “Once a month we enjoy Kol Kolot, literally ‘all voices.’ This group serves as a choir of the whole during our Friday evening Progressive services. Members sit among the congregants, serving as an anchor for the contemporary music that we sing. All are welcome to Kol Kolot monthly gatherings; there are no auditions. We sing for the pleasure of it!” The CSULB Jewish Studies Program offers an annual concert of Jewish music, held on the California State University, Long Beach campus. In 2012, they hosted Vanessa Paloma, a specialist in the Ladino music of the Jews from Spain and Portugal. In 2013, they brought Yale Strom and his klezmer band Hot Pstromi to Long Beach to play and discuss the music of the Jews of Eastern Europe. According to Dr. Jeffrey Blutinger, “We are looking forward to bringing more performers to campus in the future, including musicians specializing in Judeo-Persian music and Israeli music.” Temple Beth Shalom of Long Beach is presenting A Summertime Music Festival on June 22, starring their own Cantor Judy Sofer and seven other Cantors from all over Southern California and as far away as New York.
Community Involvement The programs listed above are just some examples of the richness of cultural arts programs that take place. By your annual support of our synagogues and agencies, you make these programs possible. In order for us to maintain these programs, we need you! Join a planning committee, buy a film festival pass, and attend the lectures and synagogue concerts. In addition, there are opportunities to name programs through the Jewish Community Foundation. For more information on current and future naming opportunities or to be added to our e-mail list, contact Sharon Kenigsberg at 562-426-7601 x1008 or [email protected].
of Israel week, Beach Hillel also held its peace through graffiti program at CSULB, where students were able to pick up informational pamphlets on Israel, become knowledgeable about the issues concerning the state of Israel, and have fun spray-painting messages of peace for Israel and the world.
Lectures & Classes The AJCC Adult program hosts the popular 92Y Lecture Series. With re-broadcasts from the 92Y in New York, they have offered lectures from Robert Wagner, Ruth Reichl, Michael Doran and Simon Schama. Also in the mix of adult programs are local professors and rabbis discussing current Jewish topics and subjects of interest to the community. To round out their program, the AJCC also offers classes in Jewish cooking, adult writing classes, dance classes and community theatre performances. For sixteen years, the CSULB Jewish Studies Program has run an annual series of eight-to-ten lectures for the Long Beach Jewish community. These talks cover the diversity of the Jewish experience such as: Jewish theology and ethics; politics (both national and local); Jewish relationships with other minority groups in Southern California; Jewish music, art, film, and literature; Jews and sports; Jewish history, from the ancient to the modern; the Holocaust; Jews and popular culture and Israel. Speakers have included professors, rabbis, writers, musicians, educators, and even movie directors and producers. All these talks are free and open to the entire community.
Music In March, Temple Israel was honored to host the Long Beach Symphony’s Sounds & Spaces performance, featuring among other musicians, the

YOU DON’T HAVE TO LOOK VERY FAR to see how much the Jewish community has contributed to society. In fact you don’t have to look beyond your own backyard.
Jewish pioneer Samuel Heller came for real estate, other Jews came to operate produce stalls. They helped transform the Long Beach area from what was once a small town into a thriving center of commerce and culture, building many of the landmarks and iconic businesses.
DURING THE 20TH CENTURY, our community came together to create the charitable organizations that took care of Jews in need, and they established the Federation to solve our greatest challenges.
Today the Federation is still at the forefront of innovation, helping people make a bigger difference - as individual philanthropists and as a community - here in the Greater Long Beach area, in Israel, and around the world.
If you would like to increase your impact, and align your charitable goals with your Jewish values, we can help. The Federation and the Jewish Community Foundation
offer a range of expert philanthropic services including: • Philanthropic Advising• Multi-Generational Philanthropy• Legacy Planning

ture through the establishment of an Endowment Fund. We are very lucky to have the support of Susan and Morton Stuhlbarg as they have just established the Morton & Susan Stuhlbarg Alpert Jewish Community Center (AJCC) Summer Stock Endowment. They have made provisions to bequeath funds to the Jewish Community Foundation, estab-lishing an endowment fund for
the yearly administration of the AJCC Summer Stock Program, which will be named in honor of their son, Michael Stuhlbarg. It will now be known as the Michael Stuhlbarg Summer Stock Program. As you might imagine, at age thirteen Michael had no idea what career path he might take. However, when he was forced (by his sister, Laurie) to audition for a part in Bye Bye Birdie, he soon learned to enjoy acting, and of course, the applause and the acclaim that went with it all. After learn-ing his craft at UCLA School of Theatre, and then receiving his BFA from The Juilliard School, he has spent the last 23 years creating a successful career as an actor. “We sincerely hope others will have the op-portunity to make that choice after participating in the AJCC Summer Stock experience,” expressed the Stuhlbargs. We have many opportu-nities such as this across the community. You may wish to fund a current program now,
or set something up for the fu-ture. You may wish to provide all costs for the program, or contribute what you can to an already established fund. You might even be so moved to contribute to the Morton & Susan Stuhlbarg Alpert Jewish Community Center Summer Stock Endowment! You can participate in the Power of Two. No matter how big or how small, every community member can par-ticipate. Together we can and will secure the future of our Jewish Community, let us assist you in doing so. Please call Danny Levy at 562-426-7601 x1007 to get started!
This past year we have shared with you the Power of Two: the Annual Commu-nity Campaign impact and the Fund for our Future stories about bequests and capital improvements to the campus. COMBINED
ANNUAL MEETING
Honoring Our Leadership
Each year the Jewish Federation and Community Foundation hold a combined annual meeting. This year, our Annual Meeting will take place at the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus on Thursday, June 12 at 7 pm. The entire community is in-vited to join in a reception, complete with wine and hors d’oeuvres prior to the meet-ing at 6 pm. During the evening, the two organizations will review their successes, elect and install new board members, and recognize leaders who have contributed to the fur-therance of our missions in the community.
Robert Baldwin Community Service Award The event is always a wonderful opportunity to come together to celebrate
our leadership. This year we are truly honored that Shirley and Eugene Ross will receive the Robert Baldwin Community Service Award. The Baldwin award recognizes dedicat-ed volunteers for years of outstanding service through tzedakah, responsibility and support for Israel. The award is in memory of Robert Baldwin (1919-1992) whose life epit-omized these principles and who was a loving role model for all whose lives he touched. Shirley’s contributions to our organizations, as a lead-er and a CPA have been in-numerable. She spent 7 years as the Foundation’s Treasurer followed by a two-year term as Foundation President. Shealso served as FederationTreasurer and served a two-year term as Federation President. She continues to sit on the finance committees of both organizations, on both Boards, as well as on the Federation’s Allocations Committee. She is also an active leader at Temple Beth David. Gene, who is a retired CPA, has sat on both the Alpert Jewish Community Center
(AJCC) Board and the Senior Citizen Housing Board. Over the years at the AJCC, he has served as the Audit Chair and on the Finance Committee. In 2004, he was awarded the AJCC Presidents’ Founders Award for his almost full-time effort working with the center’s accounting staff during a difficult time of transition. He served as the Treasurer of the Senior Citizen Housing Board until he was termed out.
Fred Neuburger Young Leadership Award We are equally proud to be able to present the Fred Neuburger Young Leadership Award to Matt Simmons. The award recognizes a young
leader, aged 45 or younger, who has a vision for strength-ening our community, the de-sire and ability to motivate others to become active in the community, and the ability to become a Federation lead-er. Matt currently serves on the AJCC Board of Directors where he has chaired several activities. He is also a found-ing chair of the Federation’s Long Beach Solomon Society.
National AwardsTwo national awardees will also be recognized that evening. Shirley Ross will be

Synagogue DirectoryThe Art of Revelation
By Rabbi Steven A. Moskowitz
This is how the moment of Revelation is described in the Torah:
There is thunder, lightning, a dense cloud. God descends to this dimension in fire. Smoke rises up. The moun-tain trembles, and the people tremble. It is as if those as-pects of creation which are inorganic and those which are organic are now merged in sympathetic resonance to the imminent presence of their Source. A horn blares. Yet, the Israelites’ senses are so convoluted that they see rather than hear those blasts and the roll of the thunder. Through all this interplay of sound and motion and light, there is a confounding of or-dinary senses which discloses a new path to harmony with the Source of all life, with all of creation, with one’s fellow human beings. The moment at Mount Sinaiis described in a palette rich with the media of the visual, movement, and musical arts.
It is art that provides the lan-guage which enables us to perceive what has always been there, but our compla-cency, our rigid orientation, and our stiff-necked attitude has kept us from seeing it. It was an artist, Bezalel, who was assigned the task of building a structure that would enable God to dwell among us. To see beyond the ordi-nariness, and discover there the extraordinary, this has always been the message of Jewish tradition. The ap-pointed leader in our journey through the wilderness is one who sees that a bush is not a mere shrub. It is also a site of inflammatory truth: Free the enslaved! Our heritage esteems those gifted with the artistic talent to re-orient our vision through the darkness of the rote and the superficial to the light of texture and dimen-sionality. The primary talent of an artist is his ability to step away from the externalities of the thing and, disregard-
ing its outer form, gaze into its innerness and perceive its essence, and be able to con-vey this in his painting. This is how an artist can serve his Creator. (Rabbi Menachem Schneerson) Great artists disclose the light that our dullness to one another has enshrouded. The great 20th century chief rabbi and kabbalist Rav Kook once told a Jewish sculptor how much he admired the work of Rembrandt: I really think that Rembrandt was a tzaddik. We are told that when God created light, it was so strong that one could see from one end of the world to the other, but God was afraid that the wicked might abuse it. So God reserved that light for the righteous in the world to come. But now and then there are great men who are blessed and privileged to see it. I think that Rembrandt was one of them, and the light in his paintings is the very light that God created on Genesis day.
To disclose light is not the same thing as providing answers. In our tradition, an-swers tend to conclude the discussion and bring to a standstill the search for mean-ing. James Baldwin wrote: The purpose of art is to lay bare the questions that have been hidden by the answers. The art of the Revelation at Mount Sinai is its continuing capacity to disrupt our en-slavement to the narrowest of paths and re-engage us in our construction of a world based on covenantal respon-sibility and mutual account-ability. Rabbi Steven Moskowitz is Rabbi at Temple Israel in Long Beach. Shavuot, the Festival of Weeks, will be from sunset June 3 - nightfall June 5, 2014. Agriculturally, it com-memorates the time when the first fruits were harvested and brought to the Temple. Histor-ically, it celebrates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai.

Do You Ever Wonder What The Hype Is All About?
Come to an open house and learn about the bene-fits of Silver Gan Israel Day
Mazel Tov Class of 2014 Anticipation and excite-ment is in the air at the Hebrew Academy as the year comes to a close and the middle and high school students prepare for their graduation. The Academy is a preschool through twelfth grade Jewish day school, which means that many of our graduates have been learning and growing together for well over a de-cade. Not only have they learned how to read, write and analyze English and Hebrew, but more important-ly, they have learned how to apply their academics to
their everyday lives in order to make a positive contribu-tion to this fast changing and complex world. The Academy has five core values and four main te-nets. The school strives to help our students develop intellec-tually, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. When our alumni are asked what they remember from their Hebrew Academy days, their answers never cease to be a center for pride for their teachers, administrators, rabbis and the parents. Sometimes, you find an alumnus who only spent a
year with us and he/she will always say – “that was the best year of my childhood life.” We are so very proud of our graduates who will cel-ebrate their graduation the evening of June17th and are soon to be Hebrew Academy Alumni. We know that they will have the tools to be suc-cessful to go on with any pur-suit they desire and become strong members of the Jewish community. We wish them the best and look forward to hear about their adult pur-suits.
Camp and the stimulating environment they provide on Sunday, June 8 between
program runs from June 23-August 22. At the open house, par-ents and children will learn about the schedule, field trips, counselors, hamster balls, laser tag, maze, swimming pools, imagination and game rooms, and much more. The open house will be held on the Silver Gan Israel/Hebrew Academy campus and is open to the entire commu-nity. Please RSVP to [email protected] if you plan to join. To learn more about the camp and this open house, please visit www.SGI.Camp or call 844-SGI-CAMP).

Shared First-Hand Experiences
At the Hebrew Academy, all students are required to take a Jewish history course about the Holocaust. As part of Holocaust Remembrance Day, a survivor of the Holocaust spoke to the upper school students. One of the students wrote the following about her experience: On Tuesday, April 28, Gerda Seifer, a Holocaust survivor, came to our school to speak with us about her ex-periences during and after the Holocaust. She told us about her experiences while living in Poland under the Russian occupation for the first two
years of the war, something that is not commonly spoken about. Then, she described her various close brushes with death while she hid from the Nazis. After the war, she managed to find her way to England with the help of Rabbi Solomon Schonfeld. Until this day, she says that when she meets someone, she evaluates their “Jewish appearance” and if they could pass themselves off as a gentile. The Holocaust is something that will affect her for the rest of her life and is important for us to remember.

10 am – 2 pm. Families will have an opportunity to tour the campus, meet one of the
directors and ask any ques-tions they may have. A pizza lunch will be available, free of charge, for all families to enjoy. “Camp families often convey that they wish they would have known about us sooner,” said Sender Engel, the camp director. “We thought it would be prudent to show off the campus and program on a quiet Sunday. With so many options, trans-portation, hot lunches, ex-tended care, various day options and more, the SGI experience becomes one that will fit into any fami-ly’s lifestyle and schedule.” The ACA accredited camp
WE ARE THE HEBREW ACADEMY“At the Hebrew Academy my children and I are treat-ed with warmth and understanding which makes us feel part of this fantastic community. Not only are my children receiving a stellar education, but they are also living and learning morals and ethics which will carry them through life at home, and in their careers.”– Valerie Bleakley & Family
