In elementary schools one could find a variety activities celebrating the day. With the spring semester being in full swing at the high school level commemoration of the 100th Day of School is not seldom recognized. However, there is plenty of activity to go around during this time of year, especially at Rose High. And, that includes Valentine’s Day not going by without the J.H. Rose Chorus conducting their annual event. The chorus delivered entertainment and joy to students and staff alike with their Singing Telegrams. A week prior, J.H. Rose hosted the Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Institute for the third year in a row. Our Culinary Arts program served a gourmet meal while Link Crew members provided informative tours. The organizer shared the following: Thank you for an excellent day today! From lunch to the information and tours, you all did an outstanding job, as always. As we were riding on the bus, many participants were talking about how much they didn’t know about J.H. Rose and how impressed they are with all you offer in and out of the classroom.” Later that week, faculty members were able to share our course offerings with rising 9th graders and current students at the J.H. Rose Curriculum Fair. Our students have been active in competition as well with the Rose Book Wars team placing 2nd in the county competition. The Mock Trial Green Team will advance to the state competition after their recent regional win. The school also received recognition from The Printing Industry of the Carolinas, Inc. (PICA) for student’s graphic design work. The piece was awarded Best of High School Division. I close with a special congratulations to Ms. Adina Midgette for her recog- nition as Pitt County School’s Cafeteria Manager of the Year. Academic Boosters February 2017

    ...enhancing teaching and learning

Ninth and 10th grade English teachers received an Academic Boosters grant in the Fall for Vocabulary Power Plus for the ACT workbooks. Other high schools in the district had implemented these workbooks into their lessons and seen great success in student assessments.

Mrs. Medlin, 10th grade English teacher, reports that “these workbooks are valuable resources for our students (not just those college bound or planning to take the ACT). Our students see and use the words in context, enhance critical reading skills with inferences, and use the words in various writing practices. These lessons are also cross-curricular because passages involve topics from science, social studies, literature, and humanities.”

The use of these workbooks does more than get students ready for college, they help students improve vocabulary skills for all types of testing, like benchmark tests and End of Course tests, as well as the ACT and SAT. The workbooks also help to lay a foundation for students in English I and II classes so that they will be better prepared for upper level English classes. The English department is highly appreciative of this grant money and all that it provides for

our students. Thank you, Academic Boosters members, for your contributions that make this

valuable resource possible for ALL 9th and 10th grade students at J. H. Rose!

    PRESIDENT VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD

The President's Volunteer Service Award is a way of recognizing student volunteerism on a national level. It is an award that celebrates the spirit of the community and the dedication of those members who offer their time and service to others. What: It is a national award recognizing outstanding commitment to volunteerism in the community. How: Students keep track of their volunteer hours during the calendar year and complete the form found on the JHR PVSA website. They have their qualifying supervisor sign off on their volunteer hours on the forms after filling out the form. Students submit all completed forms by February 28th. Dates: JHR uses the calendar year for PVSA appli-cants, Jan 1-Dec 31. All volunteer hours accumulated during that time frame is then submitted and verified. Forms are due by Feb 28th, however exceptions can be made. The paperwork is sent off in March to ensure students have the opportunity to receive their awards and recognition during awards day. Forms: Here is the JHR website for PVSA, where the forms can be found: https://sites.google.com/a/pitt.k12.nc.us/jhrpvsa/home

Why: Many students are already volunteering in the community. This award recognizes their commitment to volunteerism and the work they have put in bettering their community. Aside from strengthening the bonds of the community and helping those in need, many colleges and jobs look for students that are well-rounded and committed to serving others through volunteering or non-profit work. It is a benefit to both the community and to the student.

Whom: Submit forms to Stephanie Noles, [email protected] or in person, room 314. JHR is one of very few certifying organizations in Pitt County. There have recently been other chapters express interest, but aside from Pitt Community Partners and St. Peter’s, JHR has been a leader in this area, recognizing 5-10 students each year with the PVSA.

Special Thanks to our Corporate Sponsors!
