Introduction ~-- ...

Sixty roUX' samples were submitted by Australian Oil and Gas Corporation Ltd. for micropalaeontological examination from sections near the junction of Cox's River and Kedimba Creek, Blue Mountains. The rocks were collected systematically from two sections with the hope that a Permian microfauna may be present which could be correlated with the Victoria Pass Section, Mitchell Highway, about 10 miles to the north. The first section was at Kills Clearing, Kedimba Creek and included samples labelled DJ.l to DJ.60. and the second section from Cleary's New Road, approxima tely 6 miles

due north of Kills Clearing, the samples being labelled DJ.61 to DJ. 64.

Few samples were fossiliferous. In the Kills Clearing section, indefinite micro-organisms were present in a chert labelled DJ.9 and referred to in the Company's notes on the sample to the Burragorane; Claystone. Arenaceous ' .. foraminifera were recoeniscd in DJ. 21, 23, 25a, and 26 and' indeterminate shell fragments in DJ. 56. DJ. 60, taken at the· ... base of the section was granite. Arenaceous foraminifera were present in only one sample, DJ.6l. from Cleary's New Road section.

The arenaceous foraminirera were obtained from crushings or the moderately coarse, weathered sandstone. Some tests were excellently preserved, others were broken during the process of crushing.

The above foraminiferal assemblage is typical of that found in the Permian beds of the Capcrtdc Group in the Victoria Pass Section, Mitchell Highway collected by D. Dale Condit in 1937. ~g~.!.~.recur"'!.atn. and K<Lo~ha~ ~E. arc prominent species in the assemblage and the beds containing thcm 9 together with the speCies listed above, arc being referred to the II zone of P.ir.! t~ill? __ ~ . .c2.El'_~~ ta II. The assemblage has been found in bore sections on the western part of the Sydney BaSin. It apparently underlies the beds containing the calcareous foraminifera in which ~~Qn~i~~+'~ria~~rr~ Crespin is prominent and which will be referred to as ilie l'Zone of F;'aondi..9}l~?.riE!. ..E.D.:r;api If. The sequence of the zoro of Frolldiculpria EPlll. followed by the zone of !?J...e.:!.,ti_na recurvata was found in Dural No.2 Bore Where a dolerite sill separated beds containing the two assemblages. It is of considerable importance in the Permian stratigraphy of the ",~/estern Coalfields that the zone of Er..£..!1.<ii2.ula.ria.J2..a.r.r1. has not yet been found in outcrop samples.

Tho table below gives a tentative r:orrelation by means of the foraminifera of the bore samples examined in the western portion of the Sydney Basin and the present collection of samples.
