Elisabeth Meyer suggests that we can conceive an industrial redevelopment as more than a big thing, but as an aesthetic experience of invisible relationships that can overcome the self-centeredness of consumer society. It urges us to imagine the industrial site as the multitudinous field of individual spatial practices whose intersections offer one a sense of ‘conflictual coexistence’. The project is to construct a new kind of community, in which a society of consumers will be aware of their impact on our habitat, not simply out of self-interestedness but arising from a sense of extended, interconnected communities. I try to spatialize the contradictions between broad social values such environmentalism and individual habits such as consumption. The project might prompt the redefinition of the citizenship, from that of consumer-

citizen or environmentalist-citizen to that of consumer as environmentalist-citizen.

Inspired by the emissions pattern of oil tanks, I researched fluid dynamics as the conceptual and technical basis for choreographing urban interactions of nature, society and industry. The proposal for Birkenhead sees soil remediation as a catalyst for raising environmental awareness, and emphasises infrastructural flow in the analysis of time-based urban dynamics. Correlated systems intermingle multiple ground/landscape conditions, movement trajectories and building massing as a series of fluid urban field. In making these processes and the threats or risks associated with them palpable, individuals might acknowledge them and be motivated to act.

The project is to redevelop Port Adelaide Waterfront with a mix of open space, new neighbourhood and heritage precinct. It has articulated a comprehensive strategy to bring Port Adelaide Waterfront back to life:

• Activate the waterfront to become a city level open space.• Create an innovative residential based new neighbourhood.• Celebrate exciting new development on exceptional history.

Visitation will connect the waterfront back to the life of the City. Ongoing investment in the physical fabric of the waterfront is essential for both preservation and new uses. The creation of a world-class

park and public space in Port Adelaide Enfield is essential to the transformation of the waterfront from abandoned ships' graveyards into a vibrant, thriving mixed-use destination for the region.

The creation of new uses and spaces takes advantage of the waterfront’s attributes, including its extraordinary views, unique vantage point on the Port and established landscapes. But it must also address the challenges of the waterfront, both as a public space and future home for a broad array of uses. While many possible uses for the Port’s existing and future buildings have been contemplated, potential tenants await the Port’s transformation.

PLAN

The site design init iatives can be understood as “A

hub with distinction”. We describe a series of bold, yet

pragmatic land planning and physical design improvements

that wi l l help to create a world-class park for the

21st century. Due to its strategic location, we tried to

distinguish the development from conventional landscape

by adding modern elements and uncompromising features

and services. One of them is a square which has surfaces

with arrays of materials and colors. Visitors could easily

find their niches whatever they want. Secondly, we will

enhance and diversify the natural ecosystems, plantings,

and landscapes across the site, primarily through the

planting of new trees to complement existing trees and

careful land management practices. They will provide

a sense of shade to the guests. In the meantime, the

development has managed to fit in the surrounding

harmoniously and therefore will serves as a hub to service

not just the passers-by but also for the surrounding

businesses such as market, fast-food outlets, sport-shops

and many more. Consequently, the plot can benefit people

who are interested in an exceptional recreation spot, as well as those just looking for a shortcut.

Page 30: Jiagu Huang's Portfolio

The development of computational logic and communication networks has played a striking role in changing the practice of landscape. Sprawl, post-industrialisation, rapid urbanisation and 'natural' disasters pose significant challenges to normative design practice, requiring an approach beyond the quick fix. Maya has emerged as a new tool which responds to the demands of these conditions. Here, "landscape' is a model of connective, scalar and temporal operations through which the urban is conceived and engages a complex ecology.

Three stages of maya experiment are evident, chronicling: firstly, a clumsy yet highly experimental stage of basic software control; secondly, a more synthetic approach to landscape matter, such as land form and thirdly, the early inception of comprehensive landscape design. Each stage is based on the findings of previous stage.

Maya modeling in this studio is based on polygon, which is very different from NURBS modeling. The challenge is how to manipulate vertexes at your desire, rather than preparing the plan first. In second stage, new forms of land are explored that are not type- or context-dependent. The aim is to detect scenatios that direct design process to evolve as ecologies of machines, instead moving towards a landscape that is both adaptive and hyper-specific.

For the final project, the design studio focus on the integration of land form, spatial and material organisations, engaging in contemporary discourses on computation in the disciplines of urbanism.

This garden is in the center of a science park in Beijing, surrounded by several software company office buildings which are no more then 3 stories. Most of the land contact with companies plot, only the south-east boundary facing main road. The target is to give a comfortable as well as impressive space to higher educated people who work for these top firms.

Illumination makes the site available even at night, and could be a attraction itself.

Some serene retreats are suitable for people who need thinking or a rest after play-ing sport.

A place could serve beverage and snack.

A man-made lake will con-tribute to collecting treated grey water also rain water which are useful for irriga-tion.

Some sports fields provide workers chances to do some exercises after a exhausting brainwork day.

A nice place for communica-tion is important for science workers.

Setting friendly entries for visitors from main roads, and helping them to get destina-tions.

Making easy connection between surrounding plots and the garden, workers near by will feel free to access the landscape or other parcels.
