Jim Kennelly — Artist At Home at Shalom When Shalom Village’s Jim Kennelly was a teenager dating the girl who would eventually become his wife, times were lean and the young couple had to find ways to entertain themselves without spending money. Many evenings found them in his family’s kitchen as Jim would sketch portraits of his beau, Kay. Gazing at the wrinkled and stained charcoal sketches today, it is easy to be drawn in by her beautiful eyes and imagine what it must have been like for the young sweethearts looking to the future with most of their lives yet to come.

Jim studied at the Dundas Valley School of Art. He worked for a graphic design company in Hamilton for 53 years, both as a commercial artist and in sales.

Jim’s work as a commercial artist, where precision is demanded, has influenced his

work. While his style may be described as realism, he manages to infuse his work with a vision that elevates it beyond merely capturing images.

Jim first came to Shalom Village, at the suggestion of his occupational therapist, to exercise in the Club Fitness Centre . He was impressed with the positive atmosphere, but never imagined he would someday be calling Shalom Village home. In 2003 he suffered a stroke and worried that he might not be able to continue to create his art. When he subsequently regained his range of motion a grateful Jim donated his first post-recovery work, a beautiful painting of a hummingbird, to the stroke recovery unit at Hamilton General Hospital where it is on display today.

Since moving home to Shalom Jim has felt driven to create new art. “It's almost like an obligation” says Jim, “to make the most of the gifts I have been granted.”

Jim has generously donated a number of pieces to Shalom Village in support of our fundraising efforts. His latest project is his “Valley Town Memories” series, unveiled at this year’s Dundas Cactus Festival. These beautiful cards feature 10 original drawings of

historic Dundas buildings, including the Town Hall, the Deluxe Restaurant and the Carnegie Library. Sets of Valley Town Memories cards are also available at The Corner Store and Bubbi Bessie’s Café at Shalom Village, along with Jim’s popular Barns and Bridges cards. They can also be ordered by e-mailing [email protected].

Shalom Village has our own Colonel One day in the late fifties Ronnie Hawkins declared “If Elvis has a Colonel, I’m going to have one too!” That’s how Shalom Village’s Harold Kudlats came to be known as “Colonel” Harold Kudlats.

Harold started his career as a music promoter and agent almost by accident when he was managing the old Barton Street Arena in Hamilton. He took over a concert by the Glenn Miller Orchestra after the original promoter dropped out. He went on to promote shows by all of the big names of the era including Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Jack Benny, Gene Krupa, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, Nat King Cole and Lionel Hampton.

Harold made the transition from promoter to agent when he opened the Harold Kudlats Agency in the Royal Connaught Hotel in 1950 . As a favour to manager Don Scott he booked a then unknown singer named Conway Twitty into the Flamingo Lounge on MacNab Street where Hamilton Place stands today.

It was at the Flamingo that Conway Twitty wrote his first million selling song, It’s Only Make Believe.

Twitty told him about Ronnie Hawkins & the Hawks. Harold booked the Hawkins group into the Golden Rail at Diamond Jim’s on King Street.

“The booking almost ended before it started,” says Harold. “The staff had never heard anything like this country rock music the Hawks played. They threatened to walk out if the show went on.”

Of course the show did go on and the band was a big hit. The band’s aggressive approach to their music and Hawkins’ stage antics, including his trademark “camel walk”, set the crowd on fire and they were soon the most popular band in Ontario.

Harold had the Hawks booked in all of the best clubs. He took them to New York where they recorded with Roulette Records

and appeared on Dick Clark’s Bandstand.

When Hawkins decided to move on his band opted to stay with Harold. They renamed the band Levon and the Hawks and continued where they left off.

Harold booked them into a resort in Somer’s Cove New Jersey where they first came to the attention of Bob Dylan. They changed their name to The Band and backed up Dylan for the next couple of years.

The Band went on to great success in their own right, touring the world and releasing numerous hit records. Their spectacular farewell concert was captured by Martin Scorsesse in the 1978 film The Last Waltz.

“Those boys made a lot of money but ran through it like water” recalls Harold. “Levon would throw his bills into the fireplace unopened.”

Harold is especially proud that he worked almost exclusively with Canadian talent. He has traveled the world and become a successful agent with a reputation for integrity in a very tough business. It was rockabilly star Matt Lucas who dubbed Harold “the only honest agent in the business,” and the name stuck, with good reason.

Hats off to the Colonel!

Do the Hustle! Put on your comfortable shoes and join ESPN’s Dan Shulman

and the rest of the Shalom Village community on November 12th for the 5th Annual Hannukah Hustle! This popular 5k / 10k run and 1k walk continues to grow every year. More than 400 runners and walkers took part in 2005.

This year we are fortunate to be joined by ESPN sportscaster Dan Shulman. Mr. Shulman has generously donated his services as guest race announcer, and Shalom Village is grateful for his support.

Runners, walkers, sponsors and spectators are all welcome at the Hannukah Hustle. The action starts at 9:30 a.m. After the race join us for a barbeque and Hannukah party including latkes and cider.

Corporate sponsorships are still available for this event. The funds raised are crucial to our active living programs such as the Shalom Village Olympic

Club and The Club Fitness

Centre, as well as health promotion initiatives including in-home physiotherapy and research projects in rehabilitation. Please call Mandy at (905) 529-1613 ext. 220 for more information. ESPN broadcasting

The Shalom Village Story Shalom Village is a pioneering not for profit organization in Hamilton Ontario that provides a community of services to older adults, primarily long term care and assisted living apartments. Other programs include "Goldie's Place", a day program for cognitively impaired adults living in the community, and "The Club", an innovative fitness centre for people over the age of 70. We also house the Ruth Sherman Centre, focusing on Education and Research into issues related to aging, and levysolutions@shalomvillage, dedicated to improving the quality of life for older adults through effective use of technology.

Shalom Village is truly a village in all senses of the word. Intimate dining rooms in each House or Street allow residents to develop relationships with their closest neighbours, while an array of activities, services and social opportunities are available downtown on Shalom Village’s own York Street and elsewhere in our community. We have facilities to meet health and wellness needs, social needs, intellectual

needs and spiritual needs. There is a fully staffed fitness centre, a snoezelen, a café, an internet chat room and library, a hair salon, a volunteer centre, a synagogue, a bistro and a large facility for our day program.

Shalom Village actively builds relationships with our community partners. We are affiliated with the McMaster University Faculty of Health Sciences, where our CEO Patricia Morden is an Associate Clinical Professor. The Ruth Sherman Centre also provides educational programs in partnership with Mohawk College and the Victorian Order of Nurses.

We host the Hamilton Long Term Care

Joint Executive Committee and are active partners with The Continuing Gerontological Education Cooperative (CGEC). Our partnership with the Long Term Care Resource Centre gives our staff access to quality healthcare information that can potentially improve resident care and aid in research activities. We are active participants in the Hamilton Emergency Services Network and represent Long Term Care on the Ministry of Health’s eHealth committee developing technology and communication strategies for the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integrated Network, or LHIN.

As a not for profit organization Shalom Village relies on community support to help

us go beyond the accepted standards and provide the home that our loved ones deserve. Many of the valuable programs and activities that are so important to those who call Shalom Village home would not be possible without this support.

Thank you for helping us to keep the light shining!

Show You Care with Shalom Village Cards

Whether it is to express sympathy or to share a celebration, Shalom Village tribute cards are the perfect way to acknowledge life’s milestones and to show your family and friends that you care. Memorials, birthdays, holidays, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs and anniversaries are just some of the occasions to acknowledge with cards. You may wish to consider asking that Shalom Village memorial cards be sent in lieu of flowers when a loved one dies.

Proceeds of card sales support life and living at Shalom Village.

To send a Tribute Card or make a donation call Kathleen Thomas at (905) 529-1613 ext. 265 or send an e-mail to [email protected]
