Gardening can be an enjoyableactivity for adults and children alike.Gardening encourages creativethinking and can make for an eco-friendly activity as well.
Adding a touch of whimsy togardening can make it that much moreattractive to children. Perhaps that iswhy fairy gardens have become sopopular among youngsters. Fairy
gardens can be designed in outdoorgardens or in containers that childrencan nurse and enjoy indoors. Here aresix steps to get your fairy garden up andrunning.
1. Choose your container orlocation. Decide where to place thefairy garden. Hollowed-out tree stumpsare both contained and outdoors, andkids may feel like the fairies inhabitedthis neglected area of the yard andmade it their own. Otherwise, usecontainers you already have, such asold pots, hanging baskets, picnicbaskets or cookie tins. Woodenbirdhouses with their roofs removedalso can make for clever places tohouse the gardens.
2. Choose a theme. Fairy housescan take on any theme their creatorsprefer. Themes help children decidewhat to include in their gardens. Forexample, a seaside retreat may workwell with little reclining chairs, seagrasses and succulents. You can then
complete the theme by adding someseashells and colored stones.
3. Draw up your design. Beforesecuring anything in the container ordigging into your garden bed, sketchout a garden design. This gives you anidea of how the finished product willlook. Even before planting, gently placeplants and other components in theirspots and move them around
accordingly untilyou find thedesired look.
4. Includes i m i l a r - n e e d splants. Mixingplants that haved i f f e r e n trequirements canmake it challengingto care for the fairygarden, so selectplants that requiresimilar levels ofsunlight, prefersimilar soilconditions and
require roughly the same amount ofwatering. Herbs are a smart choicebecause they stay small and are easilymaintained.
5. Don’t forget a fairy dwelling.You will need to add a house for thefairies to inhabit. Small bird houses canwork, but you also can consider oldteapots, bird-nesting boxes or evenhomemade houses assembled out ofbark and twigs. Use your imagination
