JMOF IS 20 YEARS OLD!

This year, we are commemorating 20 years of the Jewish

Museum of Florida. The Museum, which first opened April 2,

1995, marked its official 20th anniversary last month. So, we

thought it fitting to look back on two wonderful decades and

pay homage to the Museum’s roots with this issue of TILES.

We have a brief history of the Museum on pages 4-6, and

a tribute to our Founding Executive Director, Marcia Jo Zerivitz, the driving force

behind the creation and development of the Museum on page 7.

We are grateful to have had the support we have enjoyed throughout our history,

including the public funding agencies that have been with us from the beginning

of the MOSAIC project. And we are proud to have inspired the efforts of so many

people on behalf of the Museum, without whom reaching this milestone would not

have been possible. I especially want to recognize two of our Museum Advisory

Board members, Elaine Bloom and Gwen Margolis. Both Elaine in the Florida

House and Gwen in the Florida Senate were instrumental advocates within the

state legislature and on state Tourism Committees since our earliest days. Gwen

has been a champion for cultural funding throughout her career as an elected

official, from the Senate, to the Miami-Dade County Commission, and back to

the Senate again, where she spearheaded a campaign to reverse budget cuts for

Florida’s Division of Cultural Affairs. Thanks to Gwen’s tireless work to restore the

Division’s funding, the Museum obtained $143,000 in General Program Support,

and matching funds of $240,000 through the Cultural Endowment Program – which

the Museum first qualified for, but had not received, since 2006!

Last, but certainly not least, we are deeply thankful to YOU – all of our friends

and supporters throughout the state – for the countless ways you have helped

the Museum over the years, from volunteering your time and energy to providing

essential financial support. Some of you have been with us since 1984, when the

Museum was little more than an aspiration; others are new to the Museum family.

But no matter when you joined us, we would not be here today without you. And

as we celebrate these last 20 years, we look forward to having you with us on the

journey of the Museum’s continued growth and development over the next 20

– and beyond!

Sincerely,

Kenneth M. Bloom

Teen Docent Program

MAY IS JEWISH AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH! Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM) is a national commemoration of the contributions American Jews have made to the fabric of our nation’s history, culture and society. Initiated by the Jewish Museum of Florida, with the effort led by Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and enacted by the 109th Congress, President George Bush signed a resolution in 2006 that each May would be Jewish American Heritage Month. America has been both a haven and a home to Jews. Many arrived as immigrants seeking escape from persecution, and in finding freedom, tolerance and opportunities here, have given back in all areas to enrich our national culture. Each May, the President of the U.S. issues a Proclamation for JAHM.

For 2015, JMOF-FIU will be presenting two very unique programs: Co-sponsored by the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Greater Miami Jewish

Federation and Jewish Federation of Broward County, Community Relations Committee.

May 17, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. – American Jews in the Fashion Industry

Join us for an overview of this history, starting with Jews in the garment business and many of the well known names in the industry, such as Ralph Lauren, Anne Klein, Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Kenneth Cole, Michael Kors and others. In addition, we will be celebrating Miami Beach’s children’s clothing designer, Sylvia Whyte’s 95th birthday! At the close of World War II, Sylvia Whyte opened an exclusive retail shop on

Lincoln Road that was an instant success. Trained as an art student at Cooper Union in New York, Sylvia decided to enter the field of design. It was difficult to get work in those days, but a dress that she designed for her own daughter began Whyte's career. During the postwar 1940s and early 1950s, celebrities flocked to Sylvia Whyte's shop. Debbie Reynolds bought dresses for her daughter, Carrie Fisher. Nat King Cole shopped for his daughter, Natalie. Zsa Zsa Gabor purchased clothes for Francesca, her child with Conrad Hilton. Frank Sinatra bought suits for Frank Jr. and dresses for daughters Nancy and Tina. In 1962, Whyte began manufacturing high-end infant wear and clothes for girls up to preteens. Her namesake label was sold at stores all over the country, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, I.Magnin and Macy's. Whyte described her line as "high-style for kids at prices that aren't exorbitant.” In 1988, Saks celebrated 25 years of glorious friendship with Sylvia Whyte and in 1993 Whyte was named one of the 25 most influential women in children's clothing. May 31, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. – Jewish American Heritage Month Edit-A-Thon

An “Edit-a-thon” is an event where people get together to edit Wikipedia and improve a specific topic or type of content. This program, hosted by Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, will provide participants with the opportunity to edit and create Wikipedia pages about American Jews. Using the information and objects in the JMOF-FIU collection, participants will upload details that will correct and enhance as many Wikipedia pages as

possible. Recent Wikipedia edit-a-thons have been held at Wikimedia chapter headquarters and various cultural institutions on such topics as museum collections, women's history, art, and feminism.

The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU is offering students a unique opportunity to train as volunteer docents this summer. Docents serve as tour guides for museum visitors from all over the world. Our Teen Docent Program is perfect for anyone in grade 8 or higher seeking to earn community service credit, professional experience in a museum setting, exposure to arts and cultural events and a chance to collaborate with other South Florida teens. Participants do not need any special knowledge, just a willingness to learn and an interest in public speaking.

Participants will attend our 3 two-hour training sessions at the museum this summer. (Dates & Times TBD) Upon completion, they will show off their “docenting” skills during a special Museum Family Day on Sunday, October 18.

Teen Docents earn community service hours, develop leadership and public speaking skills, obtain great experience for college and job applications and receive a one-year family membership to the museum.

2015 Teen Docent Application is available on our website: jewishmuseum.com

Thirty years ago, there was no documentation

of Jewish history in Florida. Scholars thought

this was a post-World War II phenomenon on

Miami Beach, when, in reality, documentation

goes back to Pensacola in 1763. There had

been no research - no gathering of stories of

the third largest Jewish community (by state) in

the United States.

On April 2, 2015, the Jewish Museum

of Florida (JMOF-FIU) celebrated its 20th

anniversary as a world-class, American

Alliance of Museums (AAM) accredited 15,000

square foot museum, housed in two restored,

historic buildings with a Collections and

Research Center of more than 100,000 items.

JMOF-FIU provides the full range of museum

activities including a core exhibit, MOSAIC:

Jewish Life in Florida, 1763-Present and

has presented 75 temporary exhibitions with

educational materials, academic and cultural

programs, student tours, teacher workshops,

annual and special events and much more.

In 1984, Laura Hochman was seeking the

backgrounds of her seniors at the Soref JCC,

Abe Gittelson joined her, then Henry Green as

Director, and they began MOSAIC. An $8,000

grant challenged them to expand their project

statewide and they invited Marcia Jo Zerivitz

to join them as State Coordinator. The project

team established our mission to document

Florida Jewish history and create a traveling

exhibit. Marcia set out on an 8-year trek around

Florida to find out who were the first Jews in

the communities, what they accomplished and

how they maintained their Jewish traditions.

Her organizing of community volunteer task

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JMOF-FIU!In celebration we take a look back at history… How did JMOF happen? Who is the cast of characters in the development of this non-profit organization? Note: Due to space limitation, this very brief history does not include all of the actions and names of leaders through the years. In the Museum, there are minutes of all meetings from inception and a collection of TILES newsletters that began in 1988.

forces was key to the success. Hundreds of people

shared our vision and worked hard with her to retrieve

the history, which Marcia recorded into a computer

database. This grassroots research was before the

Internet and became the genesis of the Museum’s

collection and the basis for the exhibit.

MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida opened in Miami

in 1990 and traveled over four years to 13 cities. Along

the way, our supporters expressed interest in creating

a permanent home to continue to collect the material

evidence (oral histories, photographs, documents

and artifacts) and mount exhibitions with programs to

educate the public and help ensure Jewish continuity by

creating pride from the knowledge of the contributions

of Florida’s Jews, as an example of the immigrant

experience of all Americans.

Committed leadership has been

our strength. Jim Orovitz, founding

president, conducted the first MOSAIC

Inc. Board meeting on June 22, 1990.

Murray Dubbin was the first treasurer

and brought his legal expertise to serve

our organization for 25 years. MOSAIC

attracted Murray and Helene because

they are both descendants of pioneer

families – Murray’s in Key West (1885)

and Miami (1911) and Helene’s in Tampa

(1920s). Murray says, “We both have a strong sense

of history and recognize the importance of preserving

the past, so through MOSAIC, we could carry out our

aspirations.” As a singular power couple, they have held

every volunteer position.

In June 1992, the

Board made the historic

decision to create the

Jewish Museum of

Florida. Marcia Jo Zerivitz

was designated as the

Director, charged with

managing the traveling exhibit, fundraising, finding a site,

then responsible for museum construction and planning

to open a new museum.

In December 1992, the Board signed a lease with

Congregation Beth Jacob. Norman Giller became

the campaign chair and then the first JMOF president.

Jim, Murray and Norman deserve much praise for their

sustained dedication and especially their vision - a

scarce commodity in the early days.

JMOF-FIU is a truly unique place – its mission

and its buildings. It is the nation’s first museum to

focus on a statewide ethnic history and the only one

dedicated to telling the story of the Florida Jewish

experience since at least 1763. The buildings are on

the National Register of Historic Places; the Art Deco

building with stained glass windows was destined for

demolition until we saved it. Erected as synagogues, the

location is south of Fifth Street, as that is where Jews

were allowed to live on Miami Beach.

Ira Giller was the architect and

contractor for both building restorations

and the connecting bistro structure. His

vision when planning the Museum’s first

building (301 Washington Ave.) was “to

restore the historic 1936 synagogue

while adaptively re-using it as a 21st Century museum.”

Ira says the design challenge was “to retain the original

elements (grand entry stair, balcony and sloping main

floor) while meeting the Museum needs of exhibit

and collections storage areas and flat office space.”

During construction (1993-1995), challenges included

discovering the extent of deterioration damage, including

spalling concrete foundations and beams, plaster details

and termite damaged wood floors and structure. The

building restoration earned several awards.

To achieve our level of accomplishments required a

large corps of volunteers and remarkable governance.

JMOF has been blessed with seven devoted

presidents in our 20 years.

Norman Giller believed in the need

to establish a permanent home for

MOSAIC to document the history for

future generations. He grasped the

necessity of a significant building to

create credibility for the Museum among

the public, government and donors. His proudest

moments were the opening of JMOF, the National Trust

for Historic Preservation award for building restoration

and passing the torch of leadership to the next

generation with Ira’s succession as president.

The superstar of volunteer fundraising

is Norman Levine with more than

$3 million to his credit (of more than

$35 million totally raised). He secured

50% of the Guarantors required for

a $500,000 construction loan from

the City of Miami Beach and personally guaranteed,

with Norman Giller, a loan to pay the balance on the

fabrication of the core exhibit. During his term, JMOF

purchased the three properties from the Congregation.

Levine says, “I chaired an Israel Bond luncheon at FIU

in December 2010, where Marcia Jo Zerivitz asked FIU

President Mark Rosenberg to consider a partnership

and I am most proud of being the shadchan!”

Helene Dubbin has utilized her

leadership skills to benefit JMOF and

eagerly accepted every task, grand

or modest, asked of her throughout

our growth, including two terms as

president, chairing the Nominating

Committee and Advisory Council over many years

and serving on most task forces and committees for

25 years.

Ira Giller’s contributions included doubling the size

of the Museum with the restoration and opening of the

adjacent 1929 synagogue (now the Jonathan Symons

Building), presiding over the most successful Purim Ball

and creating the master plan for future expansion to a

third building over the parking lot.

Leonard Wien is the second

generation of a powerful Miami Beach

pioneer family that continues to make

a difference in the community. His

strong sense of history and rootedness

prompted his involvement in JMOF

and writing of an extensive account of his family

to document the memories, which embodies the

Museum’s mission.

“It was a thrill to learn about the

history of Jews in Florida,” said Linda

Zilber, of her presidency. “I was able

to connect with FIU people and our

merger will insure that our Museum will

be here for all people in future years.”

Elliot Stone was the president

involved with the historic transitioning of

JMOF to JMOF-FIU that was finalized

in 2012 by the partnership with Florida

International University.

The word "history" contains the word

"story." JMOF-FIU retrieves the stories of Floridian Jews

and preserves them to strengthen our future. YOU are

invited to contribute your story to our history and help

write the next chapters.

Page 7: JMOF-FIU Tiles Spring 2015

As we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Jewish Museum of Florida (JMOF), we want to recognize and extend profound thanks to Marcia Jo Zerivitz, the driving force behind the creation of this Museum! Most acknowledge there would be no JMOF without Marcia Jo. She is the first to say she did not open the Museum by herself, but it was her ability to attract, motivate and lead dedicated volunteers, her organization, creative and fundraising skills, drive for perfection and passion that made JMOF a reality.

Thirty years ago, Marcia Jo was approached to become part of the MOSAIC team whose goal was to produce an exhibit on the Florida Jewish experience. Before 1984, there was no interest in compiling this history. Marcia Jo says, “We were able to give the world something they did not know they did not have,” and she feels complete for this contribution.

Marcia Jo is a process person and future generations are the beneficiaries. Over eight years (1985-1992) and before the days of cell phones and the internet, Wikipedia and Google, Marcia Jo traveled 250,000 miles around Florida to research and retrieve this unknown, rich story that could be documented from 1763. Working with dedicated volunteers who she recruited and trained, she produced a computer database of the gathered material evidence of Jewish life in the Sunshine State. She raised the funds for and traveled the MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida exhibit to 13 cities (1990-1994) - really hard work for a start-up, grassroots project with many doubters.

Then she led the evolution of the traveling exhibit into the Jewish Museum of Florida. Marcia Jo built our institution from the ground up – reaching out to national top-level museum professionals, executing the strategic planning of every element of a new business and having to recruit leadership and raise the funds to support it.

No one could have imagined at the time that Marcia Jo Zerivitz’s extraordinary energy, tenacity, dedication and vision would ultimately lead to the formation of this internationally acclaimed Museum, which, 20 years later, continues to collect, preserve, interpret and display for the public the experience of Jewish life in Florida.

Under Marcia Jo’s leadership, JMOF presented more than 60 exhibits in 16 years, established an Endowment Fund and achieved accreditation (2002) and re-accreditation (2011) by the American Alliance of Museums. She initiated the exploration of an affiliation with a major Florida University, and, with her approach to FIU President Dr. Mark B. Rosenberg in December 2010, the process began for the historic partnership between JMOF and FIU.

Marcia Jo’s long list of outstanding accomplishments includes initiating the efforts for the creation of legislations for a Florida Jewish History Month (2003) and a Jewish American Heritage Month (2006) – both firsts in our state and nation.

As the recognized authority of Florida Jewish history, Marcia Jo’s scholarship has been used in countless films and publications - locally, nationally and internationally. She wrote the Florida entries for Encyclopedia Judaica and has written the books, Jews of Greater Miami and Jews of Tampa, as well as the Florida Jewish Heritage Trail (with Rachel Heimovics).

Marcia Jo says, “Important things all these years later are that we know what questions to ask, interest in Florida Jewish history and the pioneer families has been piqued and I was able to put into place an ARCHIVAL SYSTEM (the Collection inventory database) for people far beyond myself to have the capability to retrieve and use the amassed information for exhibits, programs, publications, films, family research and more.” She further feels that “An archive that remains static falls behind. Research and the gathering and updating of information must be ongoing,” so this is a challenge to the Museum.

All of the knowledge, energies and skills of our Founding Executive Director in establishing and maintaining JMOF and its collection and activities have brought pride to the entire Jewish community of Florida and beyond. The excitement has been contagious and this process has created Jewish memory that strengthens Jewish identity and helps ensure Jewish continuity. For Marcia Jo Zerivitz, this process has provided 30 years of meaningful, productive life experiences, working with outstanding, devoted PEOPLE.

Elayne Weisburd

Miami Beach

Elayne Weisburd is the type of woman who did not worry about stereotypes or glass ceilings; she saw that changes needed to be made and knew that she was capable of making them. As the first female Commissioner of the City of Miami Beach from 1977 to 1979,

Weisburd helped Miami Beach get on the road to becoming a world-class city. She served as chairman of the Miami Beach Chamber’s Education Committee for more than 12 years, as well as serving on the Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs Council. In honor of her work in education, the Elayne Weisburd Excellence in Education Awards are still presented each year by the Miami Beach Chamber Education Foundation to teachers whose work is innovative in the classroom. Today, Weisburd serves as President of Miami Jewish Health Systems HCT Tenants Council and she is a member of the Miami Jewish Health Systems’ Auxiliary.

Suzanne Lasky-Gerard

Miami

Ms. Lasky-Gerard began her television career at WTVJ Channel 4 Miami in 1970, as the station’s first female producer and writer for a monthly news series. This led to her becoming WTVJ’s first woman news reporter, at a time, when there were only four other women

working at the local network affiliates. One year later Lasky-Gerard was hired by WCKT Channel 7 to host, produce, and write four weekly TV series, covering a range of topics from women’s issues to cultural arts, providing her the opportunity to interview such luminaries as Hubert Humphrey, Bob Hope, Sammy Davis Jr., James Earl Jones, William Shatner, Yul Brynner, Alan Alda and literally hundreds more. Following 12 years at WCKT, Lasky-Gerard became Executive Director and General Manager of JFTV, the Miami Jewish cable network started by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. Her greatest source of pride is her Emmy award-winning documentary about The March of the Living, which was the recipient of several local and national awards, including the Wolfson Award. Lasky-Gerard went on to form her own production company in 1993, when the industry was dominated by men.

Dr. Charlene Wygodski

St. Petersburg

Dr. Charlene Wygodski broke through the glass ceiling in 1986, when she became the first Jewish female dentist to practice in St. Petersburg. She was also one of the first women to earn Doctor of Dental Surgery from Emory University. Dr. Wygodski’s

practice is dedicated to the care of children. She has also volunteered her professional services throughout her career, including a stint at a kibbutz for the American Dental Volunteers for Israel, and offering her assistance for the Pinellas County Health Department dental clinic, Head Start Program, Rotary Dental Mission to Mexico, and the annual Give a Kid a Smile Program. The daughter of a Holocaust survivor, Dr. Wygodski is a second generation Board member of the Florida Holocaust Museum and Congregation B’nai Israel in St. Petersburg. In 2014, she received the Maimonides Alfred M. Schick MD Memorial Award for her outstanding commitment to the medical community and the Jewish Federation of Pinellas County.

Exhibit Preview

The Seventh Day: Revisiting Shabbat On view through October 25, 2015

In Jewish tradition, one of the pillars of Jewish practice, Sabbath, or Shabbat, is observed in many ways, including going to synagogue, enjoying a special meal, resting from work or physical activity and reflecting on life outside of our daily routines. This exhibition features contemporary and often provocative depictions of Shabbat through the works of leading international artists.

Over millennia, the interpretation and the practice of Shabbat has evolved, changed, and expanded to meet the needs of people, respond to the growth of rabbinic law, and adapt to the travails of living in the Diaspora. With a rapidly changing Jewish community, characterized by increasing ethnic diversity, interfaith families, challenges affecting the organized institutions of Jewish life, and an unprecedented acceptance in the fabric of North American life, what does the seventh day mean to contemporary Jews who may or may not choose to adhere to traditional observance?

The artists in this exhibition have tackled this question, resulting in these works of art born out of an era where technology and culture have eroded the boundaries separating work, play, and repose. These contemporary artworks engage our imagination and invite us to delve into the possibilities and new definitions of renewal, symbolized by the ‘day of rest.’

Traveling exhibit from Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion Museum, New York.

Vision 20/20: Looking Back/Looking ForwardOn view through October 25, 2015

This exhibition provides a glimpse into JMOF-FIU’s collection of more than 100,000 items documenting multi-generations of Jewish families throughout Florida, featuring many objects on display for the first time! Floridian Jewish Families have played an integral part in every area of the development of the Sunshine State, from the pioneer families who settled here more than 250 years ago, to the contemporary movers and shakers who are making history today.

Exhibition formed from the Collection of the Jewish Museum of Florida, originated by Marcia Jo Zerivitz, Founding Executive Director.

Gala Purim Ball 2015 Queen Esther’s Court HonoreesJust as Queen Esther made her place in history by speaking out for the Jewish people, the Jewish Museum of Florida created a Queen Esther’s Court for its Gala Purim Balls to honor Florida men and women for their exceptional leadership and commitment to the Jewish people. This year, with the theme Vision 20/20: Looking Back/Looking Forward, we honored multi-generations of prominent Florida Jewish families for their contributions to the development of Jewish life in Florida and beyond -- then, now and for future generations.

Dzialynski, Coleman and Abramovitz Families, Jacksonville & TampaFloridian Jews Into the Eighth GenerationIn 1857, in Jacksonville, George Dzialynski was the first Jewish boy born in Florida to a family that planted roots in the state and has continued to live here as Jews since 1850. George's father, Philip, came as a peddler to Jacksonville from Prussia, then brought his father, four brothers and four sisters. George married Bertha Zadek of Gainesville in 1883 and they moved to Tampa and helped organize Congregation Schaarai Zedek in 1894. The couple had two daughters, whose children all remained Jewish. Although there are no descendants today named Dzialynski, several great grandchildren have remained in Jacksonville and are

still practicing Jews. This Floridian Jewish family now has 75 descendants and continues!

Michael & Judy Adler and Family, MiamiFive Generations of Jewish Leadership Locally,Nationally and BeyondSamuel Adler and his wife Bunny married in 1946, spent their honeymoon on Miami Beach, and moved here in 1959, where they became active in the Jewish community. Both had strong role models, with Sam’s mother Esther, living to the age of 97 and Bunny’s mother, Ruth, to the amazing age of 106. Sam became President of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation (GMJF), and Bunny chaired its Lion of Judah program, soon growing their involvement to national organizations. Their children, Michael, Sara and

Karen, followed in their parents’ footsteps, with Michael and his wife Judy serving in leadership roles at GMJF and beyond. They developed GMJF’s Young Leadership group and have led countless missions to Israel. Their children are now making their own impact as young leaders, and raising the next generation to follow their example.

Rebecca Fischer and Danielle, Joshua and Aaron Traub, Hollywood Spreading Tikun Olam Rebecca Fischer, a 45-year activist and volunteer in the Jewish community, imparted her passion and love for Israel and the Jewish people to her children. Her dedication and commitment for tikun olam, “repairing the world,” has served as a role model for her children, Danielle, Joshua and Aaron Traub. They are each following in her footsteps, making significant impact as young leaders in the Jewish community and representing a shining future for our Jewish community locally, nationally and beyond.

Judy Gilbert-Gould and Family, MiamiFollowing A Legacy of Making a Difference Judy Gilbert-Gould learned from a young age that she truly could make a difference in the world, through the deeds of her parents, Stanley C. and Martha Myers. They were pioneers in the Miami Jewish community, where Stanley founded of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation in 1938. Their involvement grew locally and nationally, but their most important legacy was passing down their deep commitment to the Jewish community L’Dor V’Dor, to their children and grandchildren. Their son, Kenneth, devoted his life as a public official to improving social and human services. Judy’s passion for social

justice guided her 25 years of service at the GMJF, where she educated and lobbied on important issues to the Jewish and general communities. She continues to inspire her three children and eight grandchildren through the words of Eleanor Roosevelt, “It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.”

Doris and Frank Rosenblatt FamilyFour Generations of Leadership in TampaNathan and Elizabeth (Bess) Rosenblatt settled in Tampa in 1912 and were very active in the Jewish community. Of their six children, sons Nathan, Charles and Frank served in the armed forces during World War II. When Frank returned to Tampa, he met Doris Chaite, and they were married at Congregation Rodeph Sholom. Both of their parents instilled in them strong values of family, Judaism, community and social service, which they have passed down to their three children, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Debbie Friedman Gober & Frank Gober and Family, Broward County Three Generations of “Giving Back”Dolores and Jerome Friedman moved to Hollywood in 1967 and quickly became involved in the Jewish community, passing down their values of tikun olam to their children. Daughter Debbie and her husband Frank center their lives on Judaism and social service, with involvement in many organizations throughout Broward County, nationally and in Israel. Their three daughters have followed their example. All have been active in numerous Jewish organizations on their respective college campuses, and they continue to set examples for their peers through their inspiring Jewish leadership. The Gober family is

guided by their motto, “You make a living by what you get; you make a life by what you give.”

Joseph Shraga & Hinda Reiza Safer Family, Jacksonville & Orlando More Than a Century of Jewish Leadership in FloridaBen Zion, Benjamin, Ida, Sarah, Jacob, Harry and Max, the children of Joseph and Hinda Safer, began arriving in Jacksonville at the turn of the 20th century. Of the seven children and their spouses, there were 42 offspring. Benjamin became a rabbi and accepted a position as the religious leader of Congregation B’nai Israel in Jacksonville in 1902, where he became the role model for the religious and moral training of an entire community. Members of the Safer family have served in various Jewish and civic leadership positions for more than 100 years in Florida, as they continue to find meaning in service to the

Jewish community both as leaders and philanthropists.

We hope you will enjoy reading the tribute to Bernice Samkoff and her bequest to the Jewish Museum of Florida featured in the FIU Legacy for Learning newsletter accompanying your issue of Tiles. Many of our long-time Museum supporters will remember that it was our President at the time, Norman Levine, who introduced Bernice to the Museum and to our Founding Executive Director, Marcia Jo Zerivitz. Bernice was so impressed that she told Norman she would consider making a planned gift to the Museum, which she did! Bernice passed away six months after that memorable visit.

You, too, can help support our Museum’s unique mission of collecting, preserving and interpreting the more than 250 years of history of Jews in Florida by including JMOF-FIU in your estate plans and being named a member of our Heritage Society.

For more information about the many ways that a legacy gift can be made, now and for the future, please contact Nancy Rachman, [email protected] or 786-972-3162.

Mark Podwal: All This Has Come Upon Us November 10, 2015 – March 6, 2016

Artist, author and illustrator Mark Podwal, is best known for his drawings on The New York Times OP-ED page. The exhibit features Podwal’s drawings and paintings of historical threats of antisemitism, combined with verses from the Book of Psalms. Each image in this series depicts a tragedy or injustice in Jewish history, from slavery in Egypt through the Holocaust, and is paired with a verse from Psalms. According to Podwal, “the paintings and drawings in this series are a disturbing reminder of how Europe’s extensive history of ‘Jew-hatred’ laid the groundwork for Terezin and Auschwitz.

The Jewish Museum of Florida opened in 1995 in a former historic synagogue that housed the first congregation on Miami Beach. Built in 1936, the Henry Hohauser designed building that underwent a two-year restoration, boasts Art Deco features, a copper dome and 80 stained glass windows. In 2007, the museum expanded into the original 1929 synagogue next door after a one-year restoration, now The Jonathan Symons Building. Both buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2008, the two buildings were connected with a skylighted Bessie’s Bistro.

The museum is much more than beautiful buildings. It is a place that presents its own and traveling exhibits, sponsors cultural and educational programs, houses a Collections & Research Center reflecting 250 years of Florida Jewish history, and communicates Jewish history, art, culture and values to Jews and non-Jews alike in an informal mode. The museum is also a place where Jews of all ages and stripes discover and reaffirm their rich heritage – thus helping to strengthen Jewish identity and ensure Jewish continuity.

So how did all this get started? You may already know if you are among those who participated in and enjoyed the exhibit MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida that traveled to 13 cities (1990-94). Depicting Florida Jewish history from 1763 to the present, this was a statewide grassroots project to collect material evidence from the time Jews were first allowed to live in the Sunshine State. Thousands of photographs, artifacts and oral histories were gathered from families and this collection continues now in the museum, which was created as a result of the interest and support garnered from the original MOSAIC project.

Where the traveling exhibit was the launch, the Jewish Museum of Florida further delves into the state’s rich Jewish history of yesterday and today – for the future.

Historic Partnership with Florida International University (FIU) Following the approval of the museum’s Board of Directors, Florida International University’s Board of Trustees and the Florida Board of Governors, the museum became part of the FIU family in December 2012. This historic partnership leverages the resources of the museum and FIU, igniting a new era of interdisciplinary education and research focused on the history of the Jewish experience in Florida, the ways in which Florida Jews influence and are influenced by the cultural dynamics of Florida, the nation and the world, and issues of discrimination against all peoples in Florida throughout history. A key component of the partnership is the relocation of a variety of FIU programs, including the Jewish Studies Certificate Program, to the museum’s facilities. The plan also includes the expansion of academic programs and research endeavors designed to educate FIU students, faculty and the greater Florida community about the challenges of the immigrant experiences shared by all ethnicities in the State.

Whether your family has lived in Florida for eight generations, as some have, or just arrived – YOUR story is an important tile in the MOSAIC. Join us!
