Welcome back, JMS! It’s time to
start getting back to work and
let’s keep those grades up. Com-
ing back from a long Christmas
break was hard but we are ready
and eager for this new year! If you were passing all of your
classes, had three or less absences, you got three weeks
off. Congrats again to those hard-working students! Good
job! As everyone is coming to school during this new year,
we went around the school to let a few of our students
choose what they would like to do better in 2017.

The 7th grade science classes are learning about how living
things need adaptations to survive. Then, they will be moving on to Natural
Selection, while learning about Charles Darwin. We close out the six weeks
by going over cycles (water and carbon.) We will also have a guest speaker
from the Water Authority to speak to all our classes about the water cycle,
conserving water, and human effects on our water.

8th Grade
Science is
learning
Force and
Motion. Also,
they are
talking about Newton's Laws to ven-
ture into the vast world of Earth
and Space. They will be learning all
about the stars, galaxies, season's,
and the phases of the moon.
In January, 7th graders tackled a unit on Poetry.
They may have gone into it reluctantly, but they
came out with more confidence on the sub-
ject and some great tips on how to read and analyze this difficult
genre. Each student created a Poetry Folder that gave them tools
and reference materials to use as we read a variety of poems. Tools
to remember: 1) Read the poem more than once, 2) use SOAPStone,
3) Check for understanding each time you read the poem. Most of
all--keep an open mind when you read poetry!
They also enjoyed reading poems from Booked by Kwame Alexan-
der. If you haven't read it check it out!

N.J.H.S. {National Junior Honor Society}
N.J.H.S is an organization that focuses on service projects and
how to be a vital part of our community . During the school year
N.J.H.S. volunteered at The Mission, Joe Wright Elementary
Family Fun Night and hosted the Candy Cane Gram fundraiser.
Mrs. Martin (N.J.H.S. sponsor) says. “We plan on doing Passen-
ger Safety programs through a program called Teens in the Driv-
er’s Seat.” Mrs. Martin was asked what she likes about N.J.H.S
and she told us, “I love getting to know the students and it is
really awesome to see how hard they work to help others and to
make their community better.” Now we know that winners are
not people who never fail, but people who never quit. It’s an hon-
or to be a member of the N.J.H.S program at JMS.

7th grade band member who plays the clarinet. Sara has learned the higher octave of the clarinet since she has started band in middle school. Her favorite song in band is “Ex’s and Oh’s.” Band had there solo and

Wonderful Juanita
Our Janitors are extremely essential to JMS! One in specific is Mrs.
Juanita. She loves this school... “It is like family” to her. She enjoys com-
ing to school to see all of her co-workers and of course, the students. Her
greatest strength is her religion, her weakness is chocolate like many of
ours.
We can’t thank all of our janitors enough, they help us tremendously.
Many of us don’t acknowledge all of their hard work, but we really need
to, it’s nice to feel appreciated. It encourages them to work harder and
we definitely need their help around here. When you see one of hard-
working men or women, tell them “thank you for what you do for us!”
“Lucky” To Be A Librarian!
The one who keeps everything rolling in the right direction... we all thank
you Mrs. Lucky for everything you do here at JMS! We don’t know what
we would do without you here to keep the library organized and running
smoothly.
Mrs. Lucky feels that to be a good leader you have to have a very posi-
tive attitude. She also says you have to reach the students before you
can teach them and always let them know you love them.
Mrs. Lucky’s strengths are being organized, caring, and being reliable.
Her weaknesses are worrying too much and being stubborn.
We thank you again for everything you do and we hope you continue
making students’ reading experience so enjoyable!
