MHIMSB completes new generation MOSS type LNG carrier,DIAMOND GAS SAKURA

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.(MHIMSB), a group company of Mit-subishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI)completed construction of the DIA-MOND GAS SAKURA (HN:2332), anew generation MOSS type LNGCcalled “SAYARINGO STaGE” with atank capacity of 165,502m3, and de-livered the vessel to Diamond LNGShipping 3 Pte. Ltd. on May 15, 2019. The “SAYARINGO STaGE” suc-ceeds the “SAYAENDO” (poddedpeas) type, a vessel highly acclaimedfor its improved Moss-type sphericaltanks that deliver a high level of reli-ability. The adoption of apple-shaped(ringo) tanks in the “SAYARINGOSTaGE” has enabled increased LNGcarrying capacity without changingthe ship’s beam, and incorporation ofa hybrid propulsion system has sig-nificantly boosted fuel efficiency compared with the “SAYAENDO.” “STaGE,” an acronym derivingfrom “Steam Turbine and Gas En-gines,” is a hybrid propulsion systemcombining a steam turbine and en-

gines that can befired by gas. Effi-cient use of theengine’s wasteheat in the steamturbine results insubstantial im-provement inplant efficiency, enabling high-ef-ficiency naviga-tion throughout a full range of speeds. The adoption of a tank cover inte-grated with the hull structure, deve-loped by MHI Group with technical support from Aker Arctic TechnologyInc. of Finland, enables a lighter ves-sel while fully retaining overall struc-tural strength. The design also re-duces wind resistance during navi-gation. MHIMSB will continue to deliversolutions that enable stable energysupply and environmental benefits by constructing high quality and envi-ronmental-friendly LNG carrierswith advanced technology.

Kawasaki-LNG floating power plant obtains AiP from DNV GL

addition, Kawasaki has extensive ca-pabilities of developing, designing, andmanufacturing the core equipment, gas engines, gas turbines, steam tur-bines, and heat recovery steam gene-rators (HRSG) using its own expertisein the power plant eld, and abun-dant experience of plant engineeringin Japan and around the world. There-fore Kawasaki can provide integratedpackage solutions for the LNG bun-kering vessel and tanks for the LNGsecondary terminal. Taking advantage of synergies bet-ween these LNG and energy relatedtechnologies, Kawasaki will activelymarket its energy related productsand equipment including small andmedium-size distributed powersources, which will contribute to de-velopment in areas where stablepower sources are difficult to secure.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd.has developed an LNG oating powerplant equipped with its own high-effi-ciency power generation equipmentand the gas engine model has obtainedApproval in Principle (AiP)*1 fromDNV GL based on its “Gas PowerPlant” rules which were introduced in2018. An LNG oating power plant is anintegrated system, in which LNG fueltanks, LNG regasication unit, powergenerat ion equipment , andswitchyard are all outtted on thehull. The plant is towed on the sea orriver, and then moored at the installa-tion site, where power is generatedand supplied to the onshore powergrid. Demand for this type of power plantis expected to be strong in countrieswhere demand for electricity is rap-idly increasing, such as in SoutheastAsia, especially on islands or in loca-tions where stable power sources arediicult to secure, and also in areaswith geographical problems such aslack of land for constructing onshorepower plants. LNG has a cost advan-tage over heavy oil for power genera-tion as a fuel of the power plant, andemits less greenhouse gases than coaland heavy oil. As an environmentallyfriendly fuel, the scale of supply anddemand as well as applications ofLNG are expected to expand. The main features of the Kawasaki- LNG Floating Power Plant are asfollows:(1) The plants are equipped with in- house developed gas engine or gas turbine with the world’s highest level of power generation efficiency

in this class. (Gas engine: 49.5%, Gas turbine combined cycle: 54.4%) These system have low nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and low environmental impact.(2) The gas engine (of the gas engine model) can reach the rated load in 10 minutes from start, and can also achieve high part ial load performance over a wide power range (30 - 100%).(3) A durable, highly insulated aluminum tank is used with the same specications as for small LNG carriers/bunkering vessels.(4) High quality and reliable delivery are achieved through a seamless manufacturing value chain at Kawasaki’s own factories for the main products such as power generation facility, tank, and barge. Kawasaki has built over 40 LNG-related vessels since constructingAsia’s rst LNG carrier in 1981, in-cluding large LNG carriers and LNGfuel vessels, and has received an orderfor Japan’s rst LNG bunkeringvessel. Kawasaki is a leader in LNGtransportation technology with abun-dant expertise and rich experience. In
