Another busy month is behind us at Burnett, marking the beginning of semester 2. Along all of our classes, many club activities continue to make our school a vibrant place of learning. Our Winter Athletics season has come to an end and our staff is already planning for the different teams in our Spring Athletics season. A big thank you to all the coaches and sponsors, whose commitment and dedication is invaluable to our sports program. A huge thank you as well to our tireless athletic director, Ms. C. Bateman!
February marked the beginning of the course planning process for 2016-‐17. Our Counsellors, Ms. Takada, Ms. Schneebelli, and Mr. Reid, are currently working with students to complete this planning for next year with all our grade 8 to 11 students. It is important for students and parents/guardians to review the selections as they will be used to create the school timetable for next September.
Finally, parents are asked to mark their calendar for an important presentation on April 7, 2016 hosted by our PAC in on the topic of online safety. More information can be found in this newsletter.
Sincerely, B. Wiens Principal INTERIM REPORTS -‐ SEMESTER 2 PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES

SECOND SEMESTER START UP
…Our second semester start was very smooth. All course change requests were considered before the first week of the semester. However, it is important to note that students are asked to select courses for both semester one and two (8 courses) during program planning in the Spring prior to each new school year. Our timetable is then built and staff put in place for the year to accommodate the selections students made at this time. For this reason, there is always limited space for students wishing to make changes in order to repeat or upgrade courses. Students who did not have a specific course in first semester and are taking if for the first time second semester must be given priority. Students wishing to upgrade or repeat a course have the option of attending Full Credit Summer School for this purpose.

SCHOOL PARKING LOT Our school parking lot is increasingly becoming a concern for us. Too many students are being picked up and dropped off at school, and the traffic in the parking lot is creating some safety issues. Please encourage your son/daughter to walk to school to help ease the traffic congestion in the parking lot.
Learning Centre -‐ Room D129 Open All Blocks
What is the Learning Centre? At Burnett, we have a number of ways that we support you in doing your best possible work. The Learning Centre is one of the services that we are offering to all students. In the Learning Centre, students work with Mrs. Berry & other teachers individually or in small groups to:
• Receive extra help with challenging assignments in all subject areas • Review or catch up on class material • Develop reading, writing, study, or organizational strategies • Write tests in a separate setting … And more!
Who can use the Learning Centre? • All Burnett students!
How does the Learning Centre work? Students drop down to the Learning Centre in one of two ways:
• A teacher refers a student • A student asks their classroom teacher for a referral
Ms. Berry available all Blocks -‐ A B C D Ms. Lenahan (senior Math teacher) available every Monday, Wednesday & Friday

JN Burnett PAC DRY AFTER GRAD COMMITTEE
The Dry After Grad (DAG) was established at JN Burnett in 2005, and is supported by the BC Liquor Control Board and sponsored by the Burnett PAC. The event provides a fun and safe after grad party for the graduating students. The DAG committee arranges games such as Laser Tag and Giant Sumo Wrestling; entertainment includes a caricature artist, tattoo artists, a magician and fortunetellers. There will be lots of food and some prizes, too!!
As this event is for Grade 12 students, historically parents of the Grade 12 students have organized the event. We try to have the actual overnight after grad party run and chaperoned by volunteer parents of Grade 8-11 students.
VOLUNTEERS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED
Without enough help the event may be cancelled Julie Tischler and Margaret Tam 2016 Dry After Grad co-chairs
Watch for messages from the school for the date of the next Dry Grad committee meeting
OR To volunteer to help please contact

Richmond International Student Program Interested in opening your home up for an International Student?
The International Student Program allows overseas students to enter Grades 8 through 12 at selected secondary schools, and under certain circumstances, Kindergarten to Grade 7 at selected elementary schools in Richmond, Greater Vancouver. The program gives overseas students the opportunity to study alongside Canadian students in the BC public education system. As a Host Family, you will have an opportunity to welcome into your home, students from around the world. Your family will have a profound influence on the students’ study abroad experience. Both your family and the students you host will ideally gain a mutual understanding and respect for each other’s culture and worldview. In addition to economic remuneration, your reward will be the realization that your commitment to host international students will, in some small way, contribute to global understanding and world peace. Each member of your family and your student will come to know each other in depth. Our Home stay program is the ideal setting for this type of experience. If you are interested in learning more about our hosting program please forward an e-‐mail for information to: Karen York Home stay Coordinator -‐ International Student Program Richmond School District 38 Phone: 604-‐295-‐4303 [email protected]
