Job Description

Role title: Remaking Beamish Community Participation Officer Maternity Cover initially for 9 months

Key internal relationships: Remaking Beamish Team (Collections, Development, Learning, Engagement), Event Officers, Volunteer Co-ordinators, Costume Team, People Development and Museum visitors

Key external relationships: Community and special interest groups, community heritage organisations, individuals linked to Remaking Beamish, museum and heritage organisations in the North East.

Purpose: Develop and deliver creative and dynamic community participation activities which engage community members linked to buildings within Remaking Beamish and which enable a diverse range of local people to participate meaningfully in decision making within the project.

Duties and Responsibilities Work as a member of the Engagement and Participation Team to

‘put the visitor first’ developing and delivering high quality community engagement activity which demonstrates our commitment to delivering a world class experience through a living, working Open Air Museum.

Help to deliver the vision of The National Lottery Heritage Fund Remaking Beamish project, placing community members and visitors at the centre of all project activities both at the Museum and in the community, ensuring local people help shape the project and ensuring that diverse stories are represented at the museum.

Engage and sustain links with community members linked with buildings and stories within Remaking Beamish fostering links with people and communities across the north east.

Work closely with the Remaking Beamish Learning Co-ordinator and with individuals, community organisations and special interest groups to develop, plan and deliver appropriate, dynamic and inspiring community engagement projects and activities, outlined in the Remaking Beamish Activity Plan, which engage new audiences and promote opportunities for participation.

In collaboration with other Remaking Beamish project officers, design and implement a flexible process for the creation of Engagement Plans which includes input from our visitors, our local communities and colleagues and which ensures that diverse voices are heard.

Collect oral histories and stories from groups and individuals and ensure the summarising and storage process is carried out effectively, in collaboration with the Collections team, to ensure they can inform our Engagement Planning.

Feed in information from communities and individuals to the Remaking Beamish Engagement Development Officer to help with the preparation Engagement Plans which outline the stories and activities to be told in each new space.

Organise and attend events, talks, exhibitions and workshops across the North East to consult with the public about the project and trial new engagement activity.

Work with the Events Officers and other colleagues to trial engagement activity within events and to deliver community led celebration events linked to the opening of each new building.

Work with the Collections Team to facilitate opportunities for community members to identify key objects and the stories that can be told through them, as well as identifying stories we want to tell and the objects needed to tell those stories.

Evaluate all community participation projects against The National Lottery Heritage Fund ‘Remaking Beamish’ planned aims and objectives, reporting on a regular basis to the Remaking Beamish Team Leader and others as required.

Record participation figures and prepare internal and external reports and case studies as and when required for The National Lottery Heritage Fund funded ‘Remaking Beamish’ project.

Work with team members to ensure informed, innovative and creative approaches are taken to meet the needs of local communities and the priorities/objectives of the Remaking Beamish project outlined in the Activity Plan.

Work with colleagues to ensure consistent communication and cross area working to ensure the visitor is always placed first in any planning and activities.

Use social media to develop, maintain and foster new links with diverse audiences and communities, promoting the Remaking Beamish project activities.

Work with the Events Officers to support and encourage community participation in events at the museum and within the community to help broaden access and engagement with the Remaking Beamish project.

Work closely with the teams throughout the Museum to support events and deliver activities linked to the Remaking Beamish project.

Keep up to date with current practice in community engagement and actively seek new ideas and methods of working to enhance community participation projects.

Input in to Remaking Beamish training for staff and volunteers

General responsibilities

Maintain and continue to develop good working relationships with staff, partners, volunteers and funders in relation to the Remaking Beamish project.

Monitor and record spending on all community participation projects.

Ensure compliance with all standing orders, financial regulations, and audit management procedures.

Assist in ensuring best value for all materials, services and suppliers according to the Museums financial procedures.

Work flexibly to respond to the needs of both the museum and community.

Carry out the duties of the post in accordance with the Museum’s Equal Opportunity Policy, Code of Conduct and Health and Safety legislation and regulations. This will include developing and monitoring risk assessments for community participation team activities and managing control measures in place to reduce risk.

Ensure quality systems and standard operating procedures are in place to facilitate the smooth and timely delivery of projects and activities.

The Remaking Beamish Community Participation Officer will from time to time be expected to carry out a range of other duties commensurate with the grade and falling within the scope of the post as requested by management.

This post is subject to the Scheme and Conditions of Service of the National Joint Council for Local Authority Services.
