JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE OF JOB: Youth Worker

SERVICE/PROJECT: Young People’s Centre (YPC), based at Moulsecoomb

CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS: 16th April 2014

HOURS PER WEEK: 3 hours on a Thursday evening

TEMPORARY/PERMANENT: Fixed Term Contract until 31st October 2013 (to be extended, subject to Funding)

BAND 3, NJC POINTS 22-27, SALARY £19,623-22,958 (pro rata) (pay award pending from the 1 April) per annum, paid monthly by Automated Credit Transfer on 25th of each month

HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT: 27 days per annum, plus 3 extra days at Christmas and the usual statutory holidays (pro rata)

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Young People’s Centre Youth and Development ManagerLINE MANAGED BY: Young People’s Centre Youth and Development Manager

RESPONSIBLE FOR: Delivery of youth work within the session at Moulsecoomb Up to date record keeping in regards to monitoring and evaluating session Maintaining a safe space for young people and signposting where necessary Key holding and leading responsibilities where required

BACKGROUND AND AIMS OF PROJECT

Impact Initiatives (Impact) provides a wide range of services in Sussex for children, young people and adults.

The YPC is part of Impact Initiatives Children & Young People’s services. Located in central Brighton, it offers a wide range of opportunities for young people aged 13 –25. These include a drop-in service, counselling, youth work, sexual health, information and advice, supported access to ICT. The YPC has a reputation for innovative and user-focused work carried out in a safe environment where young people feel safe and comfortable.

More recently the YPC has also become part the Brighton and Hove Collective which works together with other youth provisions in Brighton and Hove, both charitable and statutory to provide services for young people across the city. This partnership working ensures that the youth sector is meeting the needs of young people within the city.

MAIN TASKS

Operational

1. To work with a team to supervise open access sessions, including the IT suite and Kitchen ensuring that rooms/ areas are safe and prepared for users.

2. To work with a team to deliver a youth work programme and be responsible for delivering a range of activities.

3. To promote and deliver sexual health support and interventions that are embedded within youth work programme.

4. To ensure all young people using the service within the session, receive appropriate support and information.

5. To ensure that all paperwork relevant to the sessions is completed appropriately

6. To support and supervise volunteers in delivery of the session

Building and Resources

7. To ensure any health and safety checks and risk assessments are carried out for drop in sessions and the activities delivered that you are responsible for.

8. To ensure that the Kitchen when in use conforms to Health and Safety requirements.

9. To contribute to maintaining the overall condition of the Centre, ensuring it is a positive space for young people to attend.

Monitoring /Reporting

10.To contribute to both briefing and de-briefing sessions with staff and volunteers for the session and to ensure that any client and session records are maintained.

Policies and Procedures

11.To implement project and organisational policies and procedures into daily work practice.

12.To comply with and implement Impacts Child protection policy and ensure that child protection issues are fully recorded and dealt with appropriately

13.To comply with and implement Impact Initiatives Equal Opportunities Policy and any specific policies and procedures designed to promote and monitor equal opportunities.

14.To comply with and implement Impact Initiatives Health and Safety Policy and Procedure relating to the specific activities on which you are employed. Generally, to take reasonable care for health and safety of all those affected by this work.

General

15.To attend regular supervision sessions, staff meetings and ‘Impact’ days as required and undertake any training as required

16.To be aware of the needs of other workers, paid or unpaid, and contribute positively to a supportive working environment.

17.To be part of a multi agency environment working with young people with diverse needs

18.To undertake any other duties as might reasonably be asked of the post holder at the request of the Youth and Development Manager or Centre/Service Manager.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential criteria

Experience of working with young people with a wide range of needs

Understanding of the needs, challenges and difficulties that young people face in the transition to adulthood Experience of planning, preparing and delivering youth work programmes

Commitment to and interest in working with and supporting young people to engage in positive activities

Experience of working to agreed targets and towards achievement of client outcomes.

Ability to work calmly in a busy, demanding environment and work flexibly within a team in a multi use building.

Good self-awareness & strong interpersonal skills.

Proven communication skills both written and verbal

Ability to work independently, professionally and consistently.

Ability to see solutions rather than problems.

Ability to occasionally work flexible hours e.g. evenings or weekends.

Knowledge of Child Protection and Protection of Vulnerable Adults policy and procedure

Desirable

Experience of working with or an evidence of understanding the needs ofyoung people who are NEET or have issues related to sexual health, substance misuse or mental health.

Experience of linking with other services and joint working

Level 2 qualification in Youth Work or equivalent qualifications
