The Memorial's purpose is to commemorate the sacrifice of those Australians who have died in war. Its mission is to assist Australians to remember, interpret and understand the Australian experience of war and its enduring impact on Australian society. The redevelopment of the Australian War Memorial’s galleries and precinct is the most significant redevelopment in the organisation’s 77 year history. The $500m multi-year project will deliver a substantial expansion of existing gallery spaces, a new southern extension, atrium (glazed link), and an enhanced Anzac Hall. The Role Working closely with the Concept Developers the work involves developing, interpreting and applying the Gallery Development Plans; undertaking research and analysis of the National Collection, assessing content in order to describe collection items; handling, storing and displaying collection material; liaison and negotiation with donors and coordination with stakeholders; and assistance with project development where necessary. Interpreting the overall storyline and themes for the Gallery, you will be required to provide expertise and recommendations for development and management of the Gallery including research and interpretation of the collection. You will also be required to work across multiple Memorial systems such as collection management systems (MICA, Piction and MediaBin) and document management systems (SharePoint and Trim) on a daily basis. You will also be required to work across multiple Memorial systems such as collection management systems (MICA, Piction and MediaBin) and document management systems (SharePoint and Trim) on a daily basis. This position entails working with potentially distressing and culturally sensitive material.

Core Responsibilities

Under general direction undertake a range of tasks related to the Gallery Redevelopment including:

• Contribute to the development of the Galleries by identifying and assessing potential collection material for display.

• Preparing acquisition proposals for new additions to the collection. • Contribute to the publication and research assignments for the exhibitions.• Produce high quality written work in formats such as catalogue records, exhibition text,

correspondence, minutes and reports. • Undertake accessioning and cataloguing of collection material, documenting them on the

Memorial’s collection management systems (MICA and MediaBin).• Arrange for conservation and photography of items where necessary.• Undertake administrative and project tasks in a multi-disciplinary team. • Liaise with other areas within the Memorial, in particular Conservation, Registration and Exhibitions,

in the planning and production of the exhibitions.• Respond to copyright issues in relation to collection items to be displayed.• Participate in team planning and training processes.• Undertake manual handling and movement of a wide range of objects including but not limited to

artworks, boxes, framed prints, photographic negatives and other collection items as required.

Selection Criteria

1. Demonstrated professional experience working with a military history collection to develop exhibition content.

2. Demonstrated ability to apply curatorial knowledge to the development of exhibitions and other public programs, including writing for online and print forums in a museum environment.

3. Demonstrated and highly developed research and analytical skills and experience working with collection items and historical material.

4. Demonstrated ability to cultivate productive working relationships, and to use initiative and sound personal judgement.

5. Ability to deliver business outcomes including strong organisational skills and demonstrated experience in setting task priorities, reporting on progress and paying attention to detail.

6. Demonstrated written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to work either independently and as part of a team and to liaise and negotiate with colleagues.

7. Demonstrated experience using collection management software and electronic filing systems to record and track collection items and documentation.

Desirable Criteria

Tertiary qualifications in a related discipline would be highly regarded.
