Expectation Management

A friend was recently telling me the story of the first night he kissed his future wife. Having known her

for years and loved her from afar, he confessed his feelings for her. She asked him if he wanted to sleepwith her and he said "To be honest with you, if it's just sex, we may as well not bother because there's noway the reality is going to live up to seventeen years of my fantasies!"

In the stock market, people build entire careers trying to manage the marketplace's expectation ofcompany earnings so that their stock price grows on rumours of "high earnings", yet at theannouncement of actual earnings, the stock price neither crashes with disappointment nor soars withunsustainable excitement.

Expectations exceeded bring joy, and expectations unrealised bring sadness. One of the key skills in foryou to develop is expectation managementhelping build your own and other people's expectations insuch a way that their senses are heightened, yet the actual experience of whatever it is you are offering

still exceeds the imagined one.

Today's Experiment:

1. Think of an impending event that is important to you. It could be a meeting, a phone call, anannouncement, a trip, anything that you know is coming up in the next few days.

2. Imagine the worstthe nightmare scenario. Not only do you fail, but you fail publicly,embarassingly, and on an unprecedented scale!

3. Now, imagine the bestthe Disney movie scenario. Not only do you succeed, but you save a

diabetic child from down a mine shaft along the way!

4. Finally, imagine the likeliestwhat do you think is a more likely outcome than either the nightmareor "wet dream"?

As you go through this, notice how your feelings change without anything changing in the worldaround you. This experience is the key to mastering and utilising expectation management.

Play, experiment, have fun, and learn!
