Presenting Yourself for Success… TIP: Use this as a checklist and check off the boxes as you go.
Before Your Job Interview:
Learn all you can about the company. Be prepared to answer
questions about scenarios that could happen on the job. Have
two or three of your own questions to ask.
Do a mock interview with a friend or family member.
Dress appropriately for your interview (i.e. dress clothes for
office/ casual but clean for construction).
Arrive 10-15 minutes early.
Turn your phone off.
Bring a copy of your résumé, a pad of paper and a pen for
writing down notes.
During Your Job Interview:
Be polite with all staff you encounter.
Shake hands with the interviewers.
Show your enthusiasm for the job, be authentic.
Be aware of your non-verbal behaviors: sit straight, smile as
often as you can, maintain eye contact, and don’t chew gum.
Don’t make negative comments about previous employers.
Listen very carefully to each question you are asked and give
thoughtful, clear and honest answers.
If you don’t understand the question it is okay to ask what the
interviewer means.
When the interview is over, offer a firm handshake, make eye
contact, and say ‘thank you’.
After Your Job Interview:
Make a list for yourself of what went well and areas that you
would like to do differently next time.
Call or email employer in one to two weeks if you haven’t heard
from them.
19
Common Interview Questions The following list will help to prepare you for the types of
questions that you will be asked during your interview. Practice
answering these questions out loud with a partner or on your
own. Take your time and try to provide personal examples
wherever possible. Ready…set…go!
1. Tell us about yourself. What qualities do you have that
make you a good candidate for this position?
2. Why do you want this job?
3. What do you know about our company?
4. What are your strengths and your weaknesses?
5. What would you say is your greatest achievement?
6. Tell me about a time that you went above and beyond the
call of duty. What did you do?
7. How would you say you work best: independently or as part
of a team? Tell us about an example where you did each of
these and what the results were.
8. Tell me about a time that you did not get along with a co-
worker or had another conflict on the job. What did you
do?
9. What is an example of a time you were challenged in your
job? How did you handle it?
10. If I was your supervisor, and I asked you do something that
you did not want to do, what would you say?
11. What sort of pay or wage would you be looking for? It is
helpful to look up the pay that is posted with the job or find
similar jobs and pay scale before your interview.
12. Do you have any questions for us? Have at least one
question prepared.
