School

The Importance of School from an Employer’s Perspective:-

1. English

2. Maths

3. Life experience

English and MathsA successful pass in English and Maths is vital if you wish to be successful in today’s Job Market.If you do not pass these subjects an Employer will assume that you cannot read or write and it will be very difficult for you to obtain employment. In order to change this view you may have to undertake further Literacy and Numeracy studies.

SchoolLife Experience

Because most of you have limited worked history or have not worked at all, a potential employer will be looking for the types of social interaction experience you have had at school:-

For example:-• School Sporting Teams• School groups/committees you are a member of• Other school based activities

Education and Employment

There are 4 main forms of Education that you can complete which will assist you in obtaining Employment:-

1.TAFE and University

2.Productivity Placement Programs

3.Registered Training Organisations

4.Apprenticeship/Traineeship

TAFE and UniversityUniversity and TAFE qualifications are very well regarded by potential employers.

When deciding what course to study, you should consider whether or not there will be employment opportunities in this field when you have completed your studies.

You need to understand even though you may have Degree or a Diploma you will still need to work you way up from the bottom and these qualifications will help you to get promoted and move a head!!!

Productivity Placement Programs

This training is free and is funded by the State and Federal Government. It ranges from Certificate II’s through to Diplomas and is available in such areas as:-● Automotive ● Information Technology● Retail ● Business

● Aged Care ● Childcare

This training is free when you leave school when you are referred to an appropriate Employment Service Provider through Centrelink.

Registered Training Organisations

Are organisations which offer qualifications from a Certificate II’s through to Diplomas for a fee and are accessible by everyone. This fee can range from a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars depending upon the qualification. These R.T.O.’s include organisations such as:-

● TAFE QLD ● Russo Institute● MAJOR Training ● Axiom College

Apprenticeships and Traineeships

These are accessible in 2 ways:-

1. By registering for an Apprenticeship or Traineeship through a Group Training Organisation such as:

● All Trades QLD

● QLD Apprenticeship Service

Where you will be provided with support and assistance while completing your 1–4 year Traineeship or Apprenticeship

2. By applying for advertised Apprenticeship and Traineeship positions

Resume• Need to contain all required relevant information

such as contact details, school results, previous paid work history, work experience etc

• Must be professionally presented and concise

• Must be tailored to each position you apply for

• Must include at least 2 Referees

Job Searching• Is done online through various websites such as:-

● seek.com.au ● careerone.com.au

● jobsearch.gov.au

• Most large organisations such as Hungry Jack’s, Woolworths, McDonald’s etc have their own website for employment where you can apply for work

Job Searching (Cont)• Done through marketing and networking, which

means:-

● Handing your resume to an employer in person

● Sending an Email or Letter expressing your interest in employment to a potential employer

● Finding out about employment opportunities through friends and family

Job ApplicationsApplying for work is primarily accomplished by the following methods:-

● Applying for work online by filling in an online application form

• Sending an Email with a cover letter and your resume attached to an Employer, Employment Service

Provider or Private Recruitment Orgnaisation

● Sending a Letter or Fax to Employer, Employment Service Provider or Private Recruitment Orgnaisation

● Handing your resume to an employer in person

1. Telephone Interviews

2. Group interviews

3. Panel interviews

4. One-on-one interviews

Job InterviewsPreparation steps before attending a Job Interview:

• Make sure that you are presented professionally and appropriately for the employment opportunity you are interviewing for

• Make sure that you take at least 2 copies of your resume

• If you bring a portfolio with School Results etc make sure that it will market you in a positive manner

• If possible complete a mock job interview with a family member, friend or teacher before attending the actual job

interview

• Make sure that you have confirmed transport arrangements to and from the job interview

• Make sure that you have contacted your Referees and informed them about your job interview

• Make sure that you have practiced your hand shake

• Develop some questions that you will ask the employer at the end of the interview

Job InterviewsThe actual job interview:-

• Make sure that you arrive at least 10 minutes early in case you have to fill in paperwork

• Make sure that you have your mobile phone switched off!!

• Introduce yourself to the relevant staff member informing that you are there to attend a job interview

• If you are required to wait, sit patiently and look alert and not at your watch or mobile phone

Job InterviewsWhen the job interview has commenced:-

• Try and relax and take slow deep breaths, while thinking about the answers that you give to the employer’s questions

• Make sure that you maintain eye contact with the employer at all times

• Ensure that you speak clearly and have correct posture

• You must have positive body language and non-verbal communication

• If you are unsure of a question or anything an employer says ask them to repeat themselves

Job InterviewsAt the conclusion of the interview:-

• Try and ask the employers questions whether prompted too or not

• Make sure that you ask the employer “when will I be contacted in regards to whether or not I have the job?”

• Thank the employer for the opportunity to interview for the job

• If you need to find out what you will be paid ask “What Award will I be paid under?” and then you can find out your exact pay rate online
