• The School Technology Coordinators…..

• Are members of the System Technology Committee. This position requires some knowledge of and willingness to learn how to troubleshoot computer and network hardware. This person must be willing to further his or her expertise by receiving additional training and reviewing current literature.

• Are trained and will assist all teachers in the school to achieve technology competency and to integrate technology into the curriculum.

• Attend all System-wide Technology Meetings.

Job Summary

• Complete School Technology Plans and Technology Inventories (mandated by State Department).

• Coordinate all technology related professional development activities at their respective schools.

• Instruct faculty on using and maintaining computers, printers, cameras, Interactive White Boards, Document Cameras, and any other devices deemed appropriate for instructional uses.

• Assist with school technology purchases – work with District Technology Department to ensure all bid laws are obeyed and purchases are documented in Technology Plans. Also, purchases must be compatible with network (no Vista!).

Job Summary

• Spend an average of hours a six weeks working on technology related issues. There may be some after-school and/or summer hours included.

• Are the designated liaisons to the Technology Department and appropriate vendors to report trouble ticket requests.

• Submit a log (signed by TC and principal) at the conclusion of each six weeks summarizing all Technology Coordinator related activities. During our last monitoring, they were scrutinized and helped us do well.

Requirements to receive the Supplement

• Attend all System-wide Technology Meetings• Submit a log at the conclusion of each six

• Submit one lesson plan to ALEX during the school year

3-Ring Binder

Every coordinator should keep a 3-Ring Binder for Technology each year – this can be your “Survival” binder.

E-mail Addresses

• E-mail addresses for new employees (new to our system)– Send list of your new employees to Lisa – Firstname_lastname@ecboe.org– Password is password

• They need to change passwords the first time they log in.

Sophos Antivirus • Any computer connected to the Etowah County School District Network

must be protected with Sophos Antivirus Software.• Have teachers manually check their Windows Updates and Sophos

settings to be sure they are updating daily. Also, computers must have Spybot, AdAware, or Windows Defender on them.

• It is imperative that ALL computers are protected:– Administrative– Classroom– Labs– Lunchrooms– Laptops

• One unprotected computer can cause disaster!!

Technology Inventory• Make sure your school inventory is current and

accurate.• If you moved into a new building, or are in the

process of doing so, this is the opportune time to get your inventories where they need to be.

• This information goes on your School Report Card issued by the State.

• The Tech Inventory is part of the School Technology Plan.

Disposals• Do not just throw technology in the dumpster

– Violation of FEDERAL LAW!!!!!– Have it removed from fixed assets

• Follow appropriate procedures

EPA Universal Waste Act Requires that computer hardware be disposed of in approved landfills

Items that are not disposed of properly will face expensive fines. There is a charge for this type of disposal.

Up to $25-$35 per monitor There are costly fines if individuals or organizations are caught improperly disposing

of these items. Do not throw away disposable batteries. Other items regulated by this act:

24 Port Switch 1100Each hole is a port to connect one device (computer, etc.). Most of our switches are 24 port, thus, they connect up to 24 devices each. The more devices you have in your school, the more ports or switches you need.

• Each School has only one router• The router is used to connect each school to

the Central office and then on to the Internet• If the router isn’t properly connected and

functional, Internet connectivity is impossible

Router

Adtran CSUA CSU is the device that connects a TI line to a router. The CSU converts the signal from the T1 to a signal that the router can use.

Wireless Access PointWireless Access Points are used to create wireless “hot spots” for laptops, lunchroom computers, schools with portable classrooms, and computers with wireless network cards.

The wireless access point must be plugged into a wired connection to a switch in order to be functional.

GroupWise Guidelines

• GroupWise Client should be loaded on all Teacher and Administrative Computers

• All GroupWise Clients should be set in Caching Mode– This will keep users from losing messages forever!!

• Until the Web based client is reinstalled, mail can be checked remotely– http://www.mail2web.com

• Type in your full email address and password• Any email address can be checked from this address

GroupWise Caching Mode

• Change mode from online to caching– Follow the prompts and use the same passwords

GroupWise Messenger

• All teacher and administrative computers should have GroupWise Messenger installed

• Your computer should have this installed and you should use it for easy communication with the Technology Office and your colleagues

Installing GroupWise Messenger

The Messenger will be located on the f: drive of your Novell server.It will be in a folder called “groupwise messenger”.

You will need to copy this folder to your local computer and run the setup. I have provided snapshots to help you though this process. If you have any questions please contact the IT department.

After finding the folder run setup.

Use First name _ last name that was given to you to log in. Example :randal_gilliland” that would go in the user name.

Password is what ever you use to login with. Where is reads SERVER: “MAKESURE IT READS mail.ecboe.org”

You should see this box appear when you have login in. you will need to add your contacts as needed.

• Government, Business & Industry regularly replace their computer hardware– Usually on a three to five year cycle

• Depending on their age and condition these organizations regularly donate their used computers to schools

• The Etowah County School District does not have a replacement policy because there is not a steady funding source

• We do need to develop a donation policy so that the computers that are donated can be used for a reasonable length of time and don’t end up costing the schools more money to have them disposed than they are worth

Scope and Sequence

• You need to familiarize yourself with the Etowah County Technology Scope and Sequence

• You need to familiarize yourself with the Alabama Course of Study for Technology

• Please work with your principal to make sure the Course of Study is being taught in your school

• Use the Scope and Sequence as a roadmap to teach the Course of Study

purpose. Emails, phone calls, and IM’s are not as efficient. – If you can resolve the issue…

• Close the ticket and include the appropriate information.

– If you can’t resolve the issue….• Transfer the ticket to Melissa Shields.• DO NOT send the ticket directly to a technician.

– If you do, it will be sent back to you and delay resolution of the issue.

• Mrs. Shields will send the ticket to the appropriate technician.

School Technology Plan• On the GOALS section of the school plan,

remember that you only have to address 3 objectives (some GOALS have 4 or more objectives).

• Remember to delete “help boxes” provided for you before you turn in final copy.

• The school template will be sent to you via email or district website.

• You will also be sent a copy of the system’s technology plan for review.
