INTRODUCTION AND LITERATURE REVIEW Migrants have problems like low payment,

high workload, inadequate medical care, various types of abuses and becoming vulnerable to HIV and AIDS. (Peace Trust INDIA, 1989)

Kerala is witnessing large inflow of migrant labour (1.3%) and within the state, Ernakulam accounts for the largest number of migrants.

The largest number of migrants belongs to Tamil Nadu.Around 1,31,681 Tamil women workers are working in Kerala -estimated up to 47.08% of total Tamil population in Kerala

Significance of studyThe migrants women construction workers suffer many physical and emotional harassments in their work place

Objective To study the quality of life and socio - economic well being of the migrant unorganized Tamil women construction workers from Interstate Migrant Act 1979 perspective.

Methodology The present study is descriptive in

nature. The Tamil migrant women construction workers in Kochi city was selected as the universe of the study. 60 respondents below 35 year were selected as the sample.

Researcher used convenient sampling method. Interview schedule and Scale to measure ‘Quality of life of the people’, (WHOQOL, by WHO) were used to collect the data.

Major Findings 43% of respondents migrated to Kochi because of the migration of their spouse

56.7% of respondents have liabilities. In that,60 % of respondents have taken loan from the money lenders.

73.4% have various health issues like body pain, fever and other diseases.

60% of people lack of regular employment.

90% of the respondents have no saving.

20% of people migrated to Kochi because of low wage and lack of job opportunities (17%) in their village.

36.7 % of respondent’s children are dropped out and in that 16% of respondent’s children are dropped out because of migration.

It is surprising to note that none of these migrant labourers are aware of the Interstate Migrant Labour Act 1979 and its provisions.

 INTERVENTIONS / SUGGESTIONS

Make registration of Migrant worker a compulsory it will ensure the fundamental rights of the migrant workers.

Adequate basic amenities should provide for the resident areas of the migrant workers.

Education facilities should create for the children of migrant workers.

The Self Help Groups can play an important role in developing saving habit among migrant workers.
