-4- Curriculum Development I created the following jazz history courses during my stay Northwestern University The Great Jazz Drummers This course discusses the evolution of the Jazz Drummer in relation to the development of Jazz throughout the 20th century. Students are required to identify and describe the playing styles of fifteen of the most influential jazz drummers in the history of the music. In addition, the main objective of the course requires students to elaborate on the development of Jazz as an art form in relation to the ever-changing social climate of the 20th century. The History of Big Band Jazz This course traces the evolution of Big Band Jazz in the 20th century in relation to compositional style and development. The objective of the course requires students to discuss and elaborate on compositional style and the evolution of Big Band Jazz in relation to the war years and the phenomenon of swing as a popular music. The course features ten innovative Big Bands. Contemporary Jazz Masters This course was designed exclusively for the undergraduate and graduate Jazz Studies Major. The course traces the musical development of eight of the most influential contemporary jazz masters of the 20th century: Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Bill Evans, Ornette Coleman, Wayne Shorter, and Miles Davis. America’s Music: The Art Form of Jazz This course is primarily designed for the non-major at the undergraduate level. The course discusses the very beginnings of Jazz in the 20th century, focusing on the migration of Jazz from New Orleans to New York City, Chicago, Kansas City, and beyond. Within this journey, students are exposed to compositions paired with the study of compositional form along with a basic analysis of the role of the rhythm section and the development of the improvised solo. Furthermore, students discuss the social environment that defines the historical progress of Jazz in relation to the development of African American culture in early 20th century America. Each jazz history course is augmented with a course pack that I have designed. Chronologically, the course pack consists of artist biographical outlines, interviews, and articles. The progress of each lecture is coordinated with historical video footage and selected listening examples.

-5- CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT (continued) The Jazz Combo Program Rehearsals focus on developing standard and jazz repertoire. In addition, students are highly encouraged to compose original material to add to the repertoire. Frequent performances and annual recording activities will serve as the central focus for inspiring overall program growth and purpose as well as to providing invaluable professional experiences for students. Furthermore, an active performance itinerary will greatly serve to inspire musical and social communication between the greater student body and the surrounding communities. Studio Percussion/Drum Set Instruction Studies in Drum Set encourage technical mastery of genres such as Jazz, Latin, Fusion and additional popular styles. Additionally, solo transcription techniques and coordinative studies in a number of styles are included as well. Graduate Seminar in Jazz Pedagogy The ongoing process of development as a conductor and instructor is dependent upon the active experience of directing ensembles and classroom lecture assignments. As part of my instruction in Jazz Pedagogy Seminar, each student is assigned to rehearse jazz combo and jazz ensemble while being filmed. Upon completion, video footage of each phase of instructional technique is constructively reviewed and discussed. This experience not only encompasses the study of rehearsal and conducting techniques, but also addresses the art of communication skills between instructor and student. Additional pedagogical methods of instruction include the study and discussion of: • Program Curriculum Development • Performance Techniques • Program Management
