ANZAC Day This Friday we commemorate ANZAC Day. ANZAC Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day we remember all Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. The spirit of ANZAC, with its human qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity. I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to Mrs Michelle Nitz for putting together today’s ANZAC Liturgy and to Mr Ellem and Mr Allen from the Chinchilla RSL Sub- Branch who spoke with the students about the significance of ANZAC day. It was pleasing to see the students so engaged in our nation’s history. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. ANZAC Day March Our students have been kindly invited again to march in the town ANZAC parade on Friday. This is a great privi- lege and I hope to see a large number of students take up the call. Students wishing to march are to assemble out- side the Club Hotel on Heeney Street at 10:30am for a 10:45am start. Students are to wear their full school uni- form including school hat. Students not wearing the full uniform will be unable to march. Our School Captains and Mrs Nitz have been kindly invit- ed to attend the ANZAC Day service being held at the Chinchilla State High School on Thursday at 9am. Students will be driven up by school car and will walk back to school on the completion of the service. NAPLAN Testing Coming up next month we have the NAPLAN testing (National Assessment Program - Literacy & Numeracy) for Year 3, Year 5 and Year 7 students on Tuesday 13th May, Wednesday 14th May and Thursday 15th May. The classes have been busy doing some preparation for these tests. The aim of the tests is to provide a measure of how Australian schools and students are performing in the areas of reading, writ- ing, spelling and numeracy. We support the intent of these tests and welcome the opportunity they give us to benchmark our school. These tests are, of course, only one measure and need to be considered along with school based assessments which are designed to identify students’ wide ranging strengths and diverse areas of need. I ask that you please ensure that your child is present at school for this testing on these days, as we only have one ‘catch up ‘day which is Friday 16th May. If you have any issues or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher. God Bless, Aaron Wells - Principal From the Principal’s desk... Welcome to Week 1 of Term 2! The Letter

During the Second World War, a soldier wrote a letter to his young wife and child. As the bombs were exploding all around him, he signed the letter, put it in an envelope and gave it to another soldier to send back home. Unfortunate-ly the letter never arrived. At the army post office, the letter got lost in an old sorting room. Somehow it had slipped in between some files and there it stayed for a long, long time. Not long after writing his letter, the young soldier was killed in action. Many years passed. The child grew up to be a man. A great celebration was planned for his 40th birthday at his mother’s home. The day before the party, an old, yellowed letter was delivered to the house. The stamp was foreign and the hand writing was unsteady. The man opened up the letter and read it in silence. He was stunned. The next day he read the following words to everyone at his birthday party. He explained that it was a special letter.

“Dearest Mary, I am writing to tell you that I am well and that I miss you so very much. The war is hard and there have been many soldiers wounded. However, I think about you and our young son every day. I look forward to the day when we will be all together once more. I promise that it will be soon. Your loving husband, Thomas” The young man finished reading the letter and looked around the room. There was total silence. The letter had been the best present he had ever received.

No matter how long it takes,

good news makes a difference when it arrives.

Lord,

We thank you for all the people who fought and continue

to fight to protect our country and our freedom. May we

never forget this or take it for granted. We remember and

honour the fallen and those who returned back home to us.

Amen.

Students should arrive at school no earlier than 8.20am and be collected by 3.15pm. If there are special circumstances the school must be notified. This information is important to clarify when students will have rostered supervision from staff while on the school premises. We also ask school students to only use the play fort while the teacher is on duty before school. We also ask school students to stay off the play fort during collection time to minimise distraction for our teachers who are ensuring students are collected by the appropriate people & leave the school safely.

CROSS COUNTRY Students will continue their preparations over the next few weeks for the Annual St Joey's Cross Country on Wednesday 7th May. It is very encouraging to see students progression in their endurance and confidence in their participation. Cross Country for many students is very challenging and I have been very impressed with the students positive outlook at meeting difficult and challenging situations. A timetable of the Cross Country Events will be included in next weeks Newsletter and we encourage Parents and family members to come along and support their children.
