1914Frankfurt University was founded by wealthy Frankfurt citizens

1932The university is re-named after Frankfurt’s most famous citizen and becomes Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität.

1933 to 1945

The university loses numerous students and over one third of its professors.

1946The university reopens after the end of World War II.

1967The university becomes a state administered institution by the Hessian government.

2004The university celebrates its 90th anniversary.
