“Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me.
And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His
temple; and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you
delight, behold, He is coming,” says the LORD of hosts.
(Malachi 3:1)
Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist!
(Matthew 11:11)
As John pointed to Jesus he
understood what his job was.
7And he was preaching, and saying, “After me One is
coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to stoop down
and untie the thong of His sandals. 8I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you
with the Holy Spirit.”

“…behold the lamb of God”
1. Substitution
2. Atonement
Two main thoughts that would have come to
the Hebrew mind:
7Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “Behold,
the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for
the burnt offering?” 8Abraham said,
Genesis 22:7-14
“God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” So
the two of them walked on together. 9Then they came to the place of
which God had told him; and Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood, and
bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the
wood. 10Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
11But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham,
Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12He said, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad,
and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God,
since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”
13Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught
in the thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram
and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son.
14Abraham called the name of that place The LORD Will Provide,
as it is said to this day, "In the mount of the LORD it will be provided."
Where did the ram come from?
Jehovah-jirehThe Lord will provide.
ATONEMENT
Countless Old Testament rituals and offerings involved the slaughter of a lamb on an
alter dedicated to Yahweh (Jehovah).
These were all about atonement.
Atonement signifies
reconciliation
(at-one-ment).
• Propitiation (KJV or ASV)
• Atoning sacrifice (NIV)
• Expiation (NRSV)
The angry party is propitiated
(appeased) because sin is
expiated (removed).
Three terms:
Propitiation is the primary thought…
God is holy and therefore unalterably
opposed to sin.
God is a righteous judge,
and a God who has indignation every day.
(Psalms 7:11)
O God, You have rejected us. You have broken us;
You have been angry; O, restore us.
(Psalms 60:1)
How could a sinful person approach a holy
God that hates sin? They would be justified
in being afraid to approach the Lord.
Isaiah 59:1-2
Because of God’s compassion and
kindness that same worshiper was invited
to come before the Lord with a sacrifice
God Himself had provided.
For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make
atonement for your souls; for it is the
blood by reason of the life that makes atonement.
(Leviticus 17:11)
• An individual approaching Yahweh –presented a lamb as an
atoning sacrifice.• Family observing annual
Passover Feast – a lamb was sacrificed
and eaten together.• National day of atonement –
an animal was killed, blood sprinkled on the mercy seat.
Jesus was the climax of
“substitution” and “propitiation”.
By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of
Jesus Christ once for all. (Hebrews 10:10)
• one sacrifice for one individual.
• one sacrifice for one family.
• one sacrifice for one nation.
• one sacrifice for the world!
The Progression:
who takes away the sins of the world!”
“Look, the
Lamb of
God
Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us;
we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf,
so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
II Corinthians 5:20-21
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you
may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with
the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins;
and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
I John 2:1-2
Jesus took the deadly blow headed for your soul
so you could be spared.
YOUR sin has consequences.
