John 7:2

This feast was the start of the last six months of the Savior’s life.

The Feast of Tabernacles was a time to rejoice and to express gratitude to the Lord for the rich harvest of the fertile lands of Palestine (map #2).

The Feast commemorates Moses leading the children of Israel to the Promised Land, the Land of Canaan.

This is when the Hosanna Shout began!

John 7:5

Isaiah 53:1-5 “A man of sorrows”

1. Members of his own family did not accept him at first.

2. People in his hometown sought to kill him.3. His countrymen, the Jews, rejected him.4. One friend betrayed him. One denied

knowing him.5. In the end, all disciples forsook him and fled.

John 7:17, D&C 130:20-21 and Ether 12:6

Exciting exploration is preferred by some to plodding implementation; speculation seems more fun than consecration, and so is trying to soften the hard doctrines instead of submitting to them. Worse still, by not obeying, these few members lack real knowing. Lacking real knowing, they cannot defend their faith and my become critics instead of defenders! A few of the latter end up in the self-reinforcing and self-congratulating Hyde Park corner of the Church, as if London’s real Hyde Park corner were Parliament, Whitehall, Buckingham Palace, and all of England combined! (Neal A. Maxwell, Ensign, November 1992, 66).

John 7:28

Most scholars agree that the Jews knew He was the Son of God!

John 7:37-39

Out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. But this spake he of the Spirit (v.39).

John 9:6

John 8:11-12

The J.S.T. reads and the woman glorified God from that hour and believed on his name (JST, John 8:11).

In other words, start your repentance!

John 8:32

Free from the damning power of false doctrine, bondage of appetite and lust, shackles of sin.

Result, we can work out our salvation and be exalted!

John 9:1-7

v.6 He spat on the ground, made clay in the spittle, and anointed the eyes of the

blind man with the clay.

Moses 6:35 Enoch did a similar thing.

John 7:37-39 Out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

Disabilities:

There are clearly special cases of individuals in mortality who have special limitations in life, which conditions we mortals cannot now fully fathom. For all we know, the seeming limitations may have been agreed-upon spur to achievement --- a “thorn in the flesh.” Like him who was blind from birth, some come to bring glory to God. We must be exceedingly careful about imputing either wrong causes or wrong rewards to all in such circumstances. They are in the Lord’s hands, and he loves them perfectly. Indeed, some of those who have required much waiting upon in this life may be waited upon again by the rest of us in the next world --- but for the highest of reasons (Neal A. Maxwell, “Meeting the Challenges of Today, 153).

Simply False Doctrine!

John 9:34

Spiritual blindness is a greater tragedy than physical blindness.

John 9:39

John 10:11

Sheepfold:

High walls with thorns on top with only one entrance.

Some likened it (the sheepfold) to the Celestial Kingdom.

Porter:

Several flocks were in one fold, a porter stood guard of the door while others went and rested.

Shepherd:

Generally had a name for each sheep, and each sheep would come if called (by their master).

The shepherds’ coat usually had a large pocket to carry a weak or wounded lamb.

Hireling :

Did not own the sheep, worked for the money.

John 10:17-18

The Romans or the Jews did not kill the Savior!

He Raised Lazarus from the Dead

John 11

v.3 He whom thou lovest is sick.

v.6 He abode two days in the same place where he was.

John 11:11 Lazarus Sleepeth!

The literal construction placed upon these words by the apostles evoked the plain declaration, “Lazarus is dead.” In the Talmud sleep is referred to as death (JTC, 302).

v.17 He had lain in the grave four days already!

The popular Jewish belief was that the spirit remained close to the body for three days, then left (JTC, 500).

This was the last major miracle before the Triumphal entry.

There are different kinds of tears: tears of joy, tears we shed for those who have no hope of a glorious resurrection, tears evoked by the tears of others. The latter tears are tenderness and empathy responding to the tears of others in a mutual sympathy. Jesus was approached with news saying that Lazarus was ill. Would Jesus come? Jesus said that Lazarus would be raised, but did not go right away. When He finally did go to Lazarus’ home, He found friends weeping. Though Jesus knew He was about to raise Lazarus from the dead, He, too, wept because of His empathy. Likewise, when He blessed the Nephite children, He wept for joy twice. Thus tears are evoked for a variety of reasons, so we should not be surprised when tenderness responds to tenderness, and empathy evokes tears (Neal A. Maxwell).
