February 2019 A MESSAGE FROM OUR CO-PRINCIPALS Dear Parents, On this cold February day, as a snowy blanket covers our school grounds, your delightful sons and daughters have been working diligently on their school work and adjusting to their second semester courses. How proud you would be if you could see their attentive demeanor and, for the most part, a serious approach to their studies. There are so many wonderful things happening here at Coleman to share with you. Our hope is to bring feelings of warmth and goodness to you as we all endure the bitter cold this winter season. The famed anthropologist Margaret Mead said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” We are filled with gratitude to our thoughtful and committed community for making Coleman Catholic a giving, faith- filled family……the love is in the “bones of this building” … and has been for over fifty years. There are countless people who give daily to our school without asking the cost or for anything in return. We are truly grateful for: teachers who stay in their rooms during lunch and offer extra help to the students who need it the staff member who takes the time to be sure one of our “new “drivers makes it home safely in bad weather the parents who give of their own resources to make sure all students have the money to buy a ticket to the dance or participate in a class trip the senior who quietly interviews for Harvard without fanfare and the junior who thanks her teachers first upon hearing that she is accepted to a summer program at Duke the shy voice, at the end of a long day, quietly asking our custodian if he needs some help with the cleaning of the entry way to school. The list goes on and on. We are truly humbled to be a part of a school family that takes such care of each other. Every morning we begin our days together with prayerful reflection and end with the recitation of the Peace Prayer of St. Francis in the afternoon. We feel privileged to see your sons and daughters in faith, reverence, and personal dignity as they meet our Lord in prayer. But it is the ninth grade boy who asks a new student to join him at his lunch table, the teacher who happily finds something of meaning returned to her that was missing with an apology note, the junior who stops the principal in a crowded hallway to announce unashamedly, “I love this school,” all this and more reveals the depth of their kindness We feel great hope for the future of our school and the education it provides and your children reveal the promise and possibilities to us every day. Please know that you are in our prayers . . . please keep us in yours. May God bless you and those you love always. Stay warm. Gratefully, Ellen Anderson Marie Anderson

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CO-PRINCIPALS Dear Parents, On this cold February day, as a snowy blanket covers our school grounds, your delightful sons and daughters have been working diligently on their school work and adjusting to their second semester courses. We are truly grateful for:

teachers who stay in their rooms during lunch and offer extra help to the students who need it

the staff member who takes the time to be sure one of our “new “drivers makes it home safely in bad weather

the parents who give of their own resources to make sure all students have the money to buy a ticket to the dance or participate in a class trip

the senior who quietly interviews for Harvard without fanfare and the junior who thanks her teachers first upon hearing that she is accepted to a summer program at Duke

the shy voice, at the end of a long day, quietly asking our custodian if he needs some help with the cleaning of the entry way to school.

Stay warm.

  • Date: January 29, 2019 Dear Faculty, Parents, and Students of John A. Coleman Catholic High School: On behalf of the Board of Trustees of John A. Coleman Catholic High School, I would like to invite you all to the “2019 State of the School” address scheduled for March 5, 2019 at 6:00pm in the school cafeteria. Over the past six months, our school has made significant changes in the areas of leadership, technology, and infrastructure. We believe that it is time to share our goals with the entire school community . . . our intention is to move our school forward. It is our hope that this forum will be both positive and informative. We ask that you come with questions. The program will include an overview of the school’s fiscal position and projections for the upcoming year. Our Co- Principals will discuss the “culture” of Coleman including educational programs and hopes for the future. Please know that the Coleman Board, teachers and staff continue to work diligently and selflessly to ensure that your sons and daughters are receiving the quality education they deserve and to which we are fully committed. Respectfully, Bryan M. Smith Board of Trustees - Chairman

    Coming in March:

March 5th State of the School Address The portal will be re-opened for families to view report cards on Tuesday, Feb 5th. This report

card will have the second quarter average, mid-term exam score, and the mid-year average. Honor roll will be calculated using the second quarter average. For seniors, the mid-year average is used to calculate class rank. Parents are encouraged to review grades with their children. The mid-year grades are good indicators of the likelihood of passing or failing for the year.

There is adequate time for students to make the changes that need to be made to successfully complete their courses. Questions regarding grades should be directed to the teacher of the course. Please note that the portal will not be opened for families that are not current with tuition payments and final transcripts will not be sent to colleges for seniors whose tuition payments are past due. Questions regarding tuition should be directed to the business office.

School will be closed on Feb. 18 and 19 as part of the Presidents’ Holiday.

  • The entire school community must be mindful of practices that jeopardize the safety of our community and the security of the building. We have hired Earl Mitchell to be present in the school from 3-7pm. Mr. Mitchell can be identified wearing Coleman attire. He circulates around the school checking for unlocked doors, building irregularities, and students who are not in a

supervised area. Parents can assist with safety practices by making sure that their sons and daughters leave school at dismissal unless they are in a supervised activity. No students should be waiting for rides for several hours. If there are issues that delay pick-up, the school should be informed so that arrangements for supervision can be made. Your cooperation is appreciated.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

BUILDING IMPROVEMENTS: As the result of an energy audit and assessment conducted by Central Hudson in the fall, the Board of Trustees has contracted to have the lighting inside and outside of the building upgraded. The scope of work is the installation of electronic low power ballasts and LED lighting throughout the building. The inside work has been completed. This project is partially grant funded and is expected to save $12,000 in energy costs per year.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

COLLEGE ACCEPTANCES: We are pleased to report that many of our seniors have been accepted to colleges. You will begin to see the names of students and the colleges on the electronic sign. Colleges will be looking closely at the grades earned during second semester. It is very important for seniors to continue to work hard until graduation day.

These ads may be submitted to the main office in an envelope labeled “Yearbook Ad” or mailed directly to the school at 430 Hurley Ave., Hurley, NY 12443 Attention: “Yearbook”.

  • Hello Parents! Thank you to all who spread the word about Coleman’s Open House this Friday, February 1st!

The best way to advertise our school and all it has to offer is from the families to choose to send

their children here. Ours is a great school and we appreciate all the support in communicating

this to our community! Let's show our school spirit to perspective families and join us on Friday

for the boys’ basketball game which will be in play during Open House.

  • John A. Coleman CATHOLIC High School

Courage To Lead + Committed To Serve

Dear Family and Friends of Coleman,

We are writing to ask for your help in buying and/or selling tickets to support our 27th Annual

Wine and Cheese Event and Raffle which will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at 2:00 pm at

John A. Coleman High School. Our Wine and Cheese event is one of the three fundraising

events we count on to keep the promise of Coleman alive.

Year after year this beloved school has counted on the generosity of others to support

programs that preserve our traditions and advance our mission. There is not a corner of this

school that cannot be touched by your support. There is not a student or teacher who will not

    benefit from this fundraiser.

It is our hope that you will see your way clear to purchase or sell at least two tickets to this

event. The tickets are $50 each and admit two adults to the event. In some cases you may be

able to afford additional tickets, if so please contact the main office at (845)338-2750. All

tickets received in the main office at Coleman no later than the closing of school on Thursday,

April 25th will be entered in the early bird drawing of two $250 prizes. (These winners will be re-

entered into the May 5th drawing). For every 10 tickets sold, you will receive a free ticket.

The Wine and Cheese Benefit features:

An assortment of hot and cold appetizers, desserts, and wines, as well as non-alcoholic

    beverages.

Fabulous raffle prizes to win – from the baskets donated by each Grade to a $10,000

    cash grand prize!

The popular Wine Pull!! For $20 you pull a wrapped wine bottle – and walk away a

    winner!!

We realize that many of you may be swamped in requests for donations for many worthwhile

causes. Conversing with our alumni, parents and students and hearing their stories has helped

us to understand what Coleman means to so many. We believe in our “heart of hearts” that

this truly is a worthwhile cause. We are in need of your support!

We look forward to seeing you on May 5th. Thank you for your consideration and support of

this event…. you can truly make a difference.

    Blessings always,

    Marie Anderson Ellen Anderson Co-Principals
