VOLUNTEER

Nevaeh is an eighth grader who enjoys math in school but ranks social studies at the bottom of her list. Outside of school, she loves to play soccer and go fishing with her dad. This sounds like a typical 13 year old. But not too long ago, Nevaeh’s life was very different. She witnessed things in her home that no child should have to see and she was living in a state of instability that turned her life upside down.

When working with folks in prison, or those recently released, it can often be overlooked that they are much more than just a convicted criminal. They are sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, moms and dads. There are people in their lives who may be worrying about them, praying for them, or depending on them to come home. Nevaeh was one of those people. In the longest stretch of time, she would be separated from her dad for two and a half years with very limited contact. But things weren’t necessarily better when he was at home before going to jail.

Both of Nevaeh’s parents abused drugs. “They would argue constantly,” she says. “At the time, he did drugs and would get violent when he got angry.” She was scared and nervous in her home. Thankfully, she had an older sister there to look out for her who Nevaeh considered to be like a best friend. But even though life seemed hard, it was about to get harder. When her dad went to jail, Nevaeh’s sister was taken from the home by Children and Youth Services. Though she would end up in the same home with her sister shortly after, it only lasted for about a week before she left with her mom to go to another county for six months of rehab.

Separated from her family and in a strange new environment, Nevaeh’s life was in disarray and it was because of the choices her parents had made. When asked what the hardest part of this time was, Nevaeh responded, “The calls with dad. Him asking me for another chance over and over.” He was in the process of changing his life and knew that he had to make things right with his family if he was to be with them again. After meeting with a Jubilee chaplain in prison, he decided to attend the Jubilee Aftercare Program because he knew he needed a change.

While her dad was experiencing significant life change at Jubilee, Nevaeh and her mom had relocated once the rehab program had been completed. Though it was not easy, the family would eventually be reunited. But the reality is, years of wounds are not healed in an instant. “When he first got out, we did have some trouble again,” Nevaeh remembers, “We

But her dad had a new outlook on life and was determined to not go back to the addiction that had hurt his family so badly.

The family is now making a concerted effort to heal and move forward in a more Godly way. While it isn’t always easy, it is clear to them that life is so vastly different than the way it was before, and they are grateful for it. When asked what advice she would give to other kids experiencing similar situations in their lives, Nevaeh said, “Stay strong – there’s always a good outcome in the end. Jubilee has been making Christmas cookies for inmates at Lebanon County Correctional Facility for years and now we are expanding the ministry to Schuylkill County Prison! At a time of year when most people gather with their families, this simple gift of a few cookies can speak volumes to the love of Jesus.

This increased amount of cookies presents some additional donation opportunities. In the past, a number of congregations and individuals have baked the cookies for us. This year we would like to extend the opportunity for more people to

assist by either donating toward the purchase of ingredients to be used or by helping in one of our baking days. If you would like to donate towards Jubilee’s Prison Ministry which will help cover the cost of the baking ingredients please feel free to see our website (www.jub.org) for ways to donate.

And if you are interested in participating in Jubilee’s Christmas Cookie Ministry and aren’t already involved in a pre-existing baking group, please contact Yvonne Martin at 717-274-7528 or [email protected].

Christmas Cookie ministry

Thank you to all of our banquet sponsors, donors, and attendees who supported Jubilee this year. It was an amazing night of testimony to how God can radically change a life and break the cycles of addiction, homelessness, and incarceration. If you would like to see the featured video from the evening (“Breaking the Cycle”), it is on the home page of our website (www.jub.org).

URGENT NEED! Gently Used Clothing& Especially ShoesThe majority of the life-changing ministry that occurs through Jubilee is funded by the sales in our thrift stores.

We have a big need for gently used clothing. You can donate at any of our five store locations, or in any of our Jubilee drop boxes. Jubilee has placed several of these clothing drop boxes in the Lebanon area. There are also several in Lancaster County which support both Susquehanna ValleyPregnancy Services and Jubilee Ministries. The boxes are regularly emptied by Jubileeand all proceeds benefit our local community through Jubilee’s various ministries.

erry Blessing’s funeral service was on November 2, 2019 after his battle with cancer. It was a time of uplifting remembrance of a man who God transformed in a powerful way. According to Terry, before he came to Jubilee, “I was going too fast so I had to stop. I believe that in the position that I was in – and nothing happens by accident – God stopped me.” After he had been ‘stopped’, he was able to hear what God had to tell him and it revolutionized the way he conducted his life. Many people took turns at his service to bear witness to the awesome change that had taken place in Terry’s life. He was an inspiration to anyone who saw him suffering so greatly from illness yet praising God through it all. “I believe God uses affliction to humble people. Suffering is a gift from God – especially for the Godly, the people that want to do the right thing.” Terry had a great attitude about his health. He never let it distract him from keeping his focus on the things above. A true representation of the Church could be seen as Terry’s support system grew and things like housing, meals, and transportation were provided by various people in his time of need. Friends from Jubilee’s Aftercare Program became true brothers as they would help him with whatever he needed and visit him in the hospital for encouragement. “I’m grateful and I’m glad I’ve had

an opportunity to get involved with Jubilee, period. I love

these people, this is like my family.” Anyone who

visited to encourage Terry was sure to be encouraged in return.

With his great sense of humor and loving attitude, Terry was welcoming to be around. He was excited to talk about his Lord

and Savior – Jesus Christ. Whether he was sharing his artwork praising his King, quoting scriptures that

were on his heart, or explaining his peace despite the situation because he knew God is in control.

Terry was interviewed after he had graduated from Aftercare and asked about the things he had learned that he planned to make a part of his life moving forward. “I’ve learned the truth of the Gospel – I just want to preach. I believe I’ve been called to go into ministry. That’s what I believe I’ve been called to do.” And that’s exactly what he did. Terry preached the truth of

God’s word to his family, the medical staff at the hospital, to his friends – to anyone he

came in contact with. He understood that the grace and mercy he had received through his

relationship with Jesus is so important that everyone needs to hear about it. “Nothing else matters, nothing

but the righteousness and blood of Jesus Christ. I believe I am covered by that blood. If I die today I’m walking on the other side of eternity with Jesus Christ.” As those attending Terry’s service sang the hymn I’ll Fly Away, it was a wonderful reminder that he was exactly where he wanted to be – in the presence of his Savior. He had graduated to eternal life and the suffering was ended. Here at Jubilee, we were so privileged to know Terry for the time he was here and he has left an impact on us that won’t be forgotten.

“Just a few more weary days and then, I’ll fly away. To that land where joy will never end, I’ll fly away.

I’ll fly away, oh glory, I’ll fly away. When I die, Hallelujah, by and by I’ll fly away.”
