John Ferry, President and founder of Coldwell Banker Bali Hai Realty, lives from the heart. Operating his iconic North Shore real estate firm from the heart of Hanalei, Kauai since 1978, he has made it his business to nurture people, including the thriving staff of agents, employees and social director, Braddah Kimo. Wherever John goes, aloha flows.

Born in Los Angeles on June 27, 1944, John grew up working in the family concrete business in Glendale, California where he was also a land surveyor. In 1967 on Christmas Day in Honolulu on his way to serve in Vietnam with the 32nd Medical Group is when John first became enamored by Hawaii. After spending a few years exploring each island, by 1975, Kauai’s beauty and spirit of the people firmly captured his heart, and welcomed him home.

John founded Bali Hai Realty based on his personal mantra of “everyday being a gift” and “today is the best day of my life.” Combining this approach with his real estate expertise, John has been highly involved with outstanding, award-winning property developments found at Anini Vista, Anini Beach, Hanalei, Kauapea, Kilauea, and Wai Koa Plantation, previously known as Guava Kai. A house that John and architect and longtime friend, Stephen Devery built at Anini Beach received the AIA House of the Year award for architecture. The same property also received the concrete Award of Excellence.

Perhaps it was his start in the concrete industry that gave him the unique insight on how to build a firm foundation, but one thing is for sure, John is a master builder. While inspirational in vision, his methodical approach allows him to see the whole canvas while working the details necessary to complete the picture. Whether building an architectural masterpiece, a successful business, a sustainable community, or a loving ohana, John was born and bred to be a part of and support a community who live and breathe the Hawaii lifestyle he embodies.

While John’s goal is running a successful company, ultimately, his goal is using that success to give back to Kauai’s people. With this in mind, he has been one of the founding members of the Kauai Public Land Trust and has served on its board for 15 years. The Trust has successfully acquired land and preserved it for the community for generations to come, including a 10 acre parcel of land behind the Kauai Mini Golf thanks to both him and Bill Porter. John has also served on the boards of the YMCA and the Wilcox Memorial Hospital Foundation. He received an award for restoring the Kilauea Plantation Stone Dam from the Kauai Historical Society and most recently assisted with the Kilauea Light House Restoration and the Hanalei Pier Restoration. John and Bali Hai Realty have also cleaned the highway between Kilauea Town and Anini Road for 30 years and is also responsible for maintaining the Hanalei lookout so that everyone can enjoy the magnificent views of Hanalei Bay.

Another way of giving back is letting everyone enjoy his iconic 1948 International Woody as you enter Hanalei Town. The “Woody” sits in front of the office, where it not only contributes to the colloquial island charm of Hanalei but also sports a plaque to solicit donations for the Kauai Independent Food

Bank. John’s passion for the people and land of Kauai is legendary on the island. Everywhere John Ferry goes there is aloha. He is respected and loved by the local residents for his generosity and his sense of community.

John lives in Hanalei with his wife, Corki. He loves spending time with his five children and three grandchildren. John is an avid athlete having competed in triathlons, marathons and ocean adventure races, and he loves to ski! While home, you can often find him walking or swimming Hanalei Bay or balancing a dozen coffee beverages at Hanalei Coffee Roasters for the Bali Hai Ohana. John also loves to travel and often takes his family to faraway places, so that when they return to Kauai they realize what a special place it is. He loves Kaua’i with a passion, and that’s why he gives back.

In business on beautiful Kauai since 1978, Bali Hai Realty, Inc. provides a strong sense of care and connection when it comes to Kauai real estate and Kauai vacation rentals. Employing a seasoned staff of local residents, Bali Hai Realty has a long track record of bringing excellent teamwork and a sense of ohana to their clientele. John Ferry says, “I wake up in the morning thinking about my ohana of employees and the sense of family they bring to our customers. I have good people on staff who’ve been here a long time. We extend that sense of family to our customers and community…they feel connected to us.”

The entire Bali Hai Ohana also feels passionately about supporting and caring for each other in our community, whether it’s by volunteering at the Salvation Army Kokua Soup Kitchen in Lihue, handing out food at the Food Pantry in Hanalei, or simply spreading the aloha by asking how someone’s day was with a smile. Like John’s mantra of everyday being a gift, we cherish everyday and live with aloha in our hearts to share with others.
