Downstream Oil and Gas
Chose John Crane Managed Reliability
Program (MRP), due to successful programs
run in the customer’s other European sites
PERFORMANCE PLUS® team undertook a feasibility study
of the plant to set a baseline for the proposed program
Program covers:
• Seal supply to nearly 900 pieces of equipment
• Three site-based personnel
(one-reliability engineer and two technicians)
• Seal failure analysis
• Training for customer personnel
• Stock standardization program
John Crane team became training and development partner
to educate in-house engineers and maintenance team in
importance of reliability management.

Downstream Oil and Gas
Over the next five years, the refinery achieved
a 91% improvement in mechanical seal
failure.
Estimated cost savings for the
customer amounted to more than
€1.1M EUR ($1.3M USD).
ASSET MANAGEMENT
SOLUTIONS
Data-driven services provide a deeper
understanding of process plant operations
for all equipment (not just pumps)
• Maintenance Engineering—Improves maintenance procedures
and workforce planning. Services include:
– CMMS data build and integrity
– Development of maintenance strategies
– Equipment criticality studies
– Critical spares analysis/recommendation
• Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM)—Address potential problems
before they can cause damaging impact to your operation

Upstream Oil and Gas
The customer chose John Crane to support them
due to the existing trust between the two partners.
The John Crane Asset Management team understood
the customer’s practices and operations, as well as the data.
The team undertook a structured process to
cleanse the data within the customer’s system,
using John Crane’s proprietary CMMS data
builder and optimization software.
Data cleansing identified:
• Deficiencies in existing records
• Key business critical data items
• Safety backlog, justifying changes/reductions
via quality data
• Out of service equipment, which does not need
maintenance assigning
JOHN CRANE SENSE™
PREDICTIVE DIAGNOSTICS
Software and sensors continuously gather data and
analyze and predict performance of key equipment
• Sensors connected to existing seal equipment to
continuously capture information for the algorithms
• Software algorithms incorporate John Crane’s years of experience
and data to sense potential issues affecting seal performance
John Crane experts remotely monitor the systems and provide timely,
actionable information to predict or prevent problems

Field Trial in Progress
Situation
• Petrochemical facility benzene pump with
MTBF of approximately 6 months
• Limited telemetry to DCS with manual walk
around and visual inspection
Results to date
• Continuous, detailed information allowed
John Crane to identify a procedural error
and solve a problem that was contributing
to the poor reliability
• Provided data to confirm cause of long
standing reliability problem related to the
seal support system
• Trial continued and identified multiple
failure models that were causing the seal
deterioration
• Recommended corrective actions were
taken and the seals have run 2 years
without an additional failure
