DUKE DROPS TO 10-1 Duke made it through its non-conference slate with an 8-0 record and went undefeated in the month of February for the first time since 2014. The wins against Syracuse and North Carolina pushed Duke to 10-0 for the second time in program history – the 2005 team started 11-0. Under head coach John Danowski, Duke has gone unbeaten three times in February – 2-0 in 2007 and 2008 and 4-0 in 2014. Despite the five-goal loss at Notre Dame, Duke ranks fifth nationally in scoring margin with a 6.45 goals per game edge against opponents.

DUKE MEETS VIRGINIA IN TOP-5 SHOWDOWN For the fourth straight week, the Blue Devils will face a top-five ACC program. Duke landed at No. 3 in the USILA poll following its loss, while Virginia bumped up to No. 4 with a win over UNC. Thursday night’s contest will be the 15th time these two programs will meet when ranked in the top five. Duke is 5-1 when ranked higher in those games and is 8-6 overall. Eight of the 14 top-five showdowns have come since 2007 with the Blue Devils going 6-2. The two losses were in postseason action. In a testament to the success of both the Blue Devils and Cavaliers, this will be the 17th time the two will play as top-10 opponents in the past 20 outings and the 32nd time since rankings started in 1973.

DUKE’S DOMINANCE AGAINST VIRGINIA One of the strangest phenomena in Division I lacrosse has been Duke’s success over the Cavaliers under head coach John Danowski. The Blue Devils are 18-2 versus Virginia since 2007 with both losses coming in postseason action. Duke last lost to Virginia in the regular season in 2004, a 13-4 setback in Charlottesville. The Blue Devils have won the 18 games by an average of 5.2 goals per game and have scored at least 15 goals nine times.

SCOUTING VIRGINIA Virginia enters Thursday night at 9-2 following its win over North Carolina. The Cavaliers two setbacks came against North Carolina and Syracuse. They defeated Notre Dame, 12-11, at the end of March. Like Duke, Virginia features one of the country’s top offenses. The Cavaliers are averaging 15.09 goals per game to rank sixth nationally. Matt Moore and Connor Shellenberger lead the offense with 4.40 and 4.27 points per game, respectively. Payton Cormier is the top goal scorer with 32. Defensively, the Cavaliers are giving up 12.00 goals per game to rank fourth in the ACC. Virginia holds opponents to just .288 shooting but allows foes to take 41.7 shots per game. Kyle Kology is the top takeaway artist with 19 caused turnovers, while Jared Conners has 15. Conners is also great off the ground with 49 ground balls. In goal, Alex Rode has started nine games and owns a 12.50 goals against average and a .523 save percentage. At the X, Petey LaSalla is third in the ACC with a .659 win percentage (182-276) and has 87 ground balls. He also has six goals and five assists, making him a scoring threat off the draw. Special teams have not been exceptional for Virginia as it is scoring on just 32 percent of its man-up opportunities and allowing a goal on nearly 37 percent of man-down situations. The Cavaliers rank 35th and 44th nationally in the respective categories.

THE CLEARING GAME Virginia sports the most effective ride in the country statistically, holding opponents to a .757 clearing percentage. Cavalier foes are 178-of-235 on clear attempts this season. In Virginia’s four ACC contests, opponents have been able to clear their defensive half 88 percent of the time (69-of-78). On the opposite side of the ball, Duke has struggled clearing at times this season, doing so successfully 84 percent of the time (201-239). It most recently was 21-of-29 against Notre Dame. The Blue Devils rank fourth in the ACC and 36th nationally in the category. Duke has played two of the top four teams in opponent clearing percentage in High Point and Denver and went 16-of-22 and 20-of-21 in those games, respectively, for a .837 success rate.

BREAKING DOWN THE BLUE DEVILS Michael Sowers is the top scorer with 52 points (22g, 30a), while Joe Robertson has 41 (29, 12) in his nine games. Brennan O’Neill owns a team-high 30 goals and 35 points. Nakeie Montgomery (11, 19) has 30. Twenty-two different players have scored at least one goal and 11 have at least five goals. Like on offense, Duke has depth on defense with four talented short stick midfielders in Terry Lindsay, Jake Caputo, Blake Leischow and Matt Chmil and two experienced goaltenders – Mike Adler and Turner Uppgren. The close defense is anchored by All-American JT Giles-Harris, junior Wilson Stephenson and sophomore Kenny Brower. Stephenson earned his first start down low against High Point, allowing Tyler Carpenter to run at LSM. Duke’s scoring defense is second in the ACC and 11th nationally.

DUKE’S ATTACK TRIO Duke’s attack trio of Michael Sowers, Brennan O’Neill and Joe Robertson is arguably one of the most lethal in the country. They account for 47 percent (128-of-273) of the team’s points and each have scored at least one point in every game this season. All three rank in the top 11 in the ACC in scoring average as the Blue Devils and Syracuse are the only programs to have three players ranked in the top 76 nationally in scoring average.

STARTING FAST After getting off to slow starts in the first quarters of their first two games – only scored three goals and gave up 10 – the Blue Devils outscored their opponents, 47-14, in the opening 15 minutes of the next eight games before falling behind, 3-2, to Notre Dame last weekend. Before Duke fell behind to Syracuse, the Blue Devils hadn’t trailed in a game since the 2:46 mark in the second quarter against Robert Morris on Feb. 7.

SECOND QUARTER SQUEEZE Duke’s defense has put the clamps on opponents in the second quarters this season. The Blue Devils have allowed just 21 goals overall in the second period and are giving up an average of just 8.18 shots in the quarter. Duke has shut out three of its foes in the second stanza and forced a total of 48 turnovers in eight games. Most recently, the Blue Devils didn’t find success in the second period and lost the quarter, 4-3, to the Irish en route to the setback.

QUICK STRIKE OFFENSE Over the course of 10 games, Duke has proven it can score fast and furiously. This was on display against both North Carolina and Syracuse. Versus UNC, Duke scored four goals in 4:29 to tie the game, while against Syracuse the Blue Devils scored seven goals in a span of 7:48. Six different players scored in the 7-0 run that put Duke up, 12-5. Duke managed three goals in 3:08 in the loss to the Irish. Overall this season, Duke has scored at least five goals in fewer than nine minutes in eight of the 10 contests. Against Mercer, the Blue Devils had a pair of stretches, registering five goals in 6:02 and another five in 5:59.

NAKEIE MONTGOMERY AT HIS BEST Senior Nakeie Montgomery is having his best season yet this year. He ranks fourth on the team in points with 11 goals and 19 assists. Montgomery, Joe Robertson and Michael Sowers are the only Blue Devils to have both double-digit goals and assists. The Dallas, Texas, native can impact a game in a variety of ways. He possesses incredible vision as well as the ability to beat a defender one-on-one to score. He is second on the team with 19 assists and is sixth in goals. The 30 points are 16 more than he had in the eight games in 2020. He had a career-best 39 points his sophomore season for a 2.73 points per game average. At his current average, Montgomery is on pace to nearly match the 39 in the regular season. He is one shy of reaching the century mark for his career.

OWEN CAPUTO FOLLOWING UP ON SOPHOMORE BUMP Midfielder Owen Caputo had a breakout sophomore season, ranking second on the team with 20 points from 12 goals and eight assists. In 2021, Caputo has 13 goals and four assists for 17 points after 11 games. He returned to the first midfield line against Notre Dame after and has registered at least two points in six of the 11 contests.

WILSON STEPHENSON RETURNS Wilson Stephenson is back. For the first time since May 18, 2019 Stephenson, a defenseman, played meaningful minutes as he helped anchor the close defense at Richmond. He finished the game with two ground balls and a caused turnover, his first official statistics since 2019. He earned his first career start three days later in the win against High Point, picking up two ground balls. In his four starting assignments he has 15 ground balls, including a career-high five against Syracuse. His return to the lacrosse field has not been an easy road to haul. The Greenwich, Conn., native suffered a devastating leg injury in the NCAA quarterfinal game against Notre Dame in 2019. After two weeks in the hospital and a few surgeries, Stephenson was released from the hospital. Stephenson immediately started his journey back to playing lacrosse, which he vowed would happen. He returned to campus in the fall of 2020 and worked his way towards walking and building strength and after numerous surgeries, he returned to the lacrosse field this past fall for Duke practices. Stephenson made his amazing return official when he stepped on the field to play against Mercer, Feb. 13. His work culminated in his starting assignment against the Panthers.

DYSON WILLIAMS MOVES TO THE MIDFIELD Duke sophomore Dyson Williams returned after a standout rookie season where he led the Blue Devils in scoring with 30 points from 26 goals and four assists at attack. He was on pace to have 48 tallies, four shy of Justin Guterding’s Duke rookie record. Williams returned to the starting attack unit in 2021 and registered six goals in his first three games before he was sidelined for two games. When he returned to the field against Richmond, Williams found himself in a new position in the midfield. Playing limited minutes versus the Spiders, Williams registered his first goal as a midfielder. He has grown more comfortable in the position recently, tallying two goals in three of the past four games.

TYLER CARPENTER HAS THE SCOOP Sophomore defenseman Tyler Carpenter has been tremendous off the ground for Duke. The native of Durham, N.C., has 48 ground balls in his 11 games, 25 more than he had in the eight games as a rookie. He has picked up at least four in nine of the 11 outings and recorded six in the win over North Carolina. Carpenter is third among non-faceoff specialists in ground balls in the ACC.

SOWERS CLIMBING THE CHARTS Sowers continues to shine for the Blue Devils, leading the team with 52 points. He has seven five-plus point outings this season and six games with at least three assists. Riding a 58-game point streak, Sowers has 354 career points from 143 goals and 211 assists. He is tied with Matt Danowski for No. 5 on the NCAA all-time chart. Speaking of the records book, Sowers recently reached the 200 assists mark, becoming the sixth player in Division I history to reach the benchmark. He needs 21 assists to break Pat Spencer’s NCAA assists record of 231. His current average of 6.10 points per game ranks fifth all time. To put his productivity into perspective, only six players this century averaged more than five points per game for their careers.

NASO STELLAR AT THE X Starting with the Robert Morris game, rookie Jake Naso has been Duke’s top draw man. The St. Anthony’s product has taken 79 percent (225-of-285) of the team’s faceoffs in the past 10 games and has won 152 of them for a .673 win percentage. Naso got a break against High Point as Dan O’Connell took the bulk of the draws. Naso is the lone freshman to rank in the top 10 in faceoff percentage nationally, while his 152 wins already are the most by a rookie in Duke lacrosse history. Brendan Fowler won 86 draws (86-of-155) his freshman year, while CJ Costabile went 49-of-91. Other top draw men over the years at Duke - Sam Payton, Kevin Cassese and Scott Bross - earned their stripes later in their careers, making Naso’s success at the X all that much more impressive. In addition to winning 67 percent of the faceoffs, Naso has 84 ground balls and two goals and two assists. He leads the ACC in ground balls per game (8.36) and is fifth nationally.

GILES-HARRIS TOP TAKEAWAY BLUE DEVIL JT Giles-Harris was the 2019 ACC Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the third Blue Devil to win the award since it began in 2012 and the first close defenseman. Giles-Harris led Duke in caused turnovers in 2020 with 13 and has 82 for his career. He will chase the Duke career caused turnovers record held by Luke Duprey, needing seven more takeaways to pass him. The NCAA officially started tracking the statistic in 2010. Giles-Harris has increased his total in each of his three previous seasons from nine, to 22 to 26.

THE STREAKS CONTINUE The point streaks continued for Michael Sowers and Joe Robertson last Saturday. Sowers has scored at least one point in all 58 of his collegiate games, dating back to his Princeton debut Feb. 18, 2017. Sowers has been held without a goal just five times and has only been held to a single point twice in his career - against Syracuse and Notre Dame this season. Senior Joe Robertson pushed his streak to 38 games, dating back to March 24, 2018. Sowers and Robertson are two of 13 players sporting at least a 37-game point scoring streak. Robertson also extended his goal streak to 16 games, joining Dyson Williams on the short list of 13 players. With one goal against Notre Dame, Dyson Williams extended his games with at least one goal to 17 – every game of his young career.

PATH OF BRENNAN O’NEILL Much has been written about Brennan O’Neill, considered by some to be a once in a generation player. He committed to Duke in the fall of 2018 after changing a previous verbal commitment to Penn State after one season of high school lacrosse. A mixture of size – he is 6-2, 230 – and skill, O’Neill made waves as an eighth grader when he scored 99 points for Bay Shore High School. He made the move to St. Anthony’s after that and

proceeded to take his lacrosse career to another level over the next three seasons. As a Friar, O’Neill led his team to the 2019 CHSAA (Long Island/state) championship game where he had a spectacular seven-goal effort in a 14-13 win over rival Chaminade. He was named the Warrior/US Lacrosse National Player of the Year in 2019, finishing with 56 goals and 26 assists. He had 98 points in 2018.

O’NEILL GETTING COMFORTABLE O’Neill bounced between midfield and attack in the first few games of the year before finding a permanent home on attack with Sowers and Joe Robertson. In his debut against Denver, O’Neill played attack and had three goals and four points overall. He had two points in each of the next two games and has now hit his stride, scoring five goals in each of the past two games. O’Neill had eight points in his first three games and has 18 in the past five outings alone for a 3.60 points per game average in that stretch.

NUMBERS AND RECORDS TO WATCH There are a lot of numbers to keep an eye on for Duke this season. There are a host of records and milestones in sight for the talented Blue Devils.

JOE ROBERTSON160 points - two shy of moving into the top 25 on Duke career chart

JOEY MANOWN86 goals - 14 shy of becoming another 20 100-goal scorers

MICHAEL SOWERS211 assists - 21 shy of breaking Pat Spencer’s NCAA record of 231354 points - tied for 5th on the NCAA career scoring chart and 47 off of Lyle Thompson’s NCAA career record of 400

JT GILES-HARRIS82 caused turnovers - seven away from breaking Luke Duprey’s school record of 88

BREAKING DOWN DUKE’S WEALTH OF DEPTH IN 2021 Duke has arguably the most depth during John Danowski’s 14 seasons as the head coach of the Blue Devils. It returned 10 seniors from the 2020 team and welcomed six graduate student transfers, each with at least 30 games under their belts. Duke’s list of attackmen features three with at least 115 points (Sowers, J Robertson, Manown), Dyson Williams who had 30 points in eight games in 2020, O’Neill, a rookie with scoring power and JP Basile who led the squad in assists last season. Phil Robertson was a starter for Princeton last season, leaving Duke a great wealth of talent on the field if and when it needs the next man to step up. In the midfield, the Blue Devils have six players who have played at least 20 games. Bolstered by talented rookie Aidan Danenza, Duke has enough depth and talent to have transition midfielders from SSDM to spark the offense. At SSDM, Duke is experienced with two-year team captain Terry Lindsay playing in 75 career games and Blake Leischow 59. Matt Chmil has played 23 games in his career and is coming off his best season, while Jake Caputo played in all eight as a rookie in 2020. While Duke might be thinner in depth at close defense and LSM, the Blue Devils return its starting close defense and LSM corps from a year ago. In goal, Duke is buoyed by a talented group of five goalies, including graduate transfer Mike Adler and two-year starter Turner Uppgren. At the X, Duke has a group that has taken nearly 2,000 faceoffs over the past four seasons and won 57 percent of those.

DUKE’S DEPTH PROVING TO BE DANGEROUS A lot has been made of Duke’s talented roster, especially on offense, leading up to the 2021 campaign. The Blue Devils have backed up the discussions as 22 different Blue Devils have at least one point this season. Three defensive players are a part of the scoring mix – Jake Caputo, Tyler Carpenter and Terry Lindsay. In addition to the balanced scoring, Duke’s options in goal proved to be instrumental to the team’s success in the first two games. Three different goaltenders saw action in the first two games with graduate student transfer Mike Adler earning the start against the Pioneers and Turner Uppgren the nod versus Robert Morris. Adler played the first 16 minutes against Denver, allowing six goals, before Uppgren came off the bench to make 11 saves and earn the victory. It was a reversal of roles in the Robert Morris outing as Uppgren allowed five early goals to the Colonials. Adler got the call after 10 minutes and came in to make 11 saves in 45 minutes. Andrew Bonafede made two saves in the final 3:42 against Robert Morris.

DUKE’S EXPERIENCE AT MIDFIELD The Blue Devils have a lot of game experience all over the field, but especially in the midfield with seven players having played at least 25 games and two playing every game over the past four seasons. Overall, Duke’s six midfielders have played in 334 career games.

DUKE ROOKIES - SMALL IN NUMBERS MIGHTY IN TALENT Duke’s 2021 rookie class is smaller in numbers than usual, but packed with talent. The group comprises of three five-star and four four-star players and features a goalie (Evan Barr), the nation’s top faceoff specialist (Jake Naso), a defenseman (Cole Krauss) and three midfielders (Aidan Danenza, Ryan Mackenzie, Charlie O’Connor) and attackman Brennan O’Neill. Krauss, Naso and O’Neill were among the 26 players selected for the U.S. U19 National Team training roster in the fall of 2019. They were three of the seven high school players selected. All three and Danenza were voted the Under Armour Senior All-America team in 2020. Danenza, Naso and O’Neill all played together at St. Anthony’s. Naso won 80 percent of his draws in 2019, while Danenza had 22 goals and 20 assists for the Friars en route to the state championship. Krauss is ranked 22nd among rookies by Inside Lacrosse and O’Connor was 33rd overall and among the top midfielders by the magazine.

DANOWSKI DIVISION I WINS LEADER Head coach John Danowski created a club of his own in the 2019 season opener as he became the first Division I men’s lacrosse head coach to capture 400 career wins. He is among four across all three divisions to reach the mark after Denver’s Bill Tierney joined the club March 30, 2019. He etched his name at the top of the Division I men’s lacrosse wins list in 2017, beating Jacksonville for his 376th career victory. Dom Starsia held the previous record of 375. The Blue Devils’ leader has 209 wins at Duke, 192 at Hofstra and 27 in his first stop at LIU Post. Danowski, a winner of three NCAA titles, is one of four active coaches to own multiple NCAA titles. He is third among the group with three, while Bill Tierney of Denver leads the way with seven.

DYSON AND ZACK GREER CONNECTION As a rookie, Williams tallied seven goals against Richmond, joining elite company as the first Duke attackman to score seven in a game since Zack Greer did so against St. John’s in 2008 and the first Duke player since Deemer Class posted seven versus Syracuse in 2016. Williams and Greer hail from the same hometown of Oshawa, Ontario. Greer and Williams’ father, Shawn Williams, played togetheron Team Canada and for Edmonton Rush in the NLL.

OFFSEASON MOVES During the 332-day break, a lot happened within collegiate lacrosse as student-athletes searched for programs to call home for their final season after the NCAA granted an extra year of eligibility. The Blue Devils, arguably, benefitted the most of any program as six players picked Duke as their final destination. Headlining the transfer class was Michael Sowers of Princeton. The premier attackman in the game, Sowers was on pace to break the NCAA single-season record for points and assists before the season came to an abrupt end. Fellow Princeton attackman, Phil Robertson, also elected to join Sowers and spend his final season with his younger brother, Joe. Phil had 70 career points at Princeton. Mike Adler arrived in Durham after a stellar career at Saint Joseph’s, finishing his career with the Hawks with a .569 save percentage. Dan O’Connell spent four years at Holy Cross, winning 446 faceoffs and 63 percent of his restarts as a Crusader. Rounding out the transfer group are Amherst attackman Jon Coffey and Dartmouth defenseman James Sullivan.

BLUE DEVIL LACROSSE FAMILY AFFAIR The Blue Devils feature two pairs of brothers on the squad in 2020 as Princeton transfer Phil Robertson joins his brother, Joe Robertson, for one final season. Jake and Owen Caputo are in their second season as Blue Devils. The family affair continues onto the coaching staff with assistant coach Ron Caputo in his second season coaching at least one son. Head coach John Danowski and Matt Danowski are a father-son duo, while Ned Crotty is Matt’s brother in law.

DYSON WILLIAMS KEEPS 51 IN THE FAMILY Freshman attackman Dyson Williams is keeping the No. 51 in the family. His father, Shawn Williams, made the number famous in lacrosse circles and Dyson’s brother, Tucker, also wore the number before he died of cancer at age eight in 2014. Dyson and Shawn were able to play a game together in 2017 when they both donned uniforms for the Brooklin Redmen and combined for 10 points. Shawn scored 842 goals in a distinguished summer box lacrosse league. He currently serves as an assistant coach with the Colorado Mammoth.

CARPENTER - A LIFELONG BLUE DEVIL Tyler Carpenter has been Blue Devil his entire life after the family moved to Durham when his mom, Jolene Nagel, was hired as the Duke volleyball coach. Nagel was hired in 1999 and has 648 wins as a volleyball head coach, 445 of which have come at Duke. Tyler’s brother CJ Carpenter also played for the Blue Devils from 2016-2020. He saw action in 38 games, including 10 starts, finishing with 32 goals and 47 points. Carpenter’s father, Sam Carpenter, played lacrosse at Middlebury and professionally with the Denver Rifles. He served as the head coach of Denver University from 1986-88 and was an assistant coach for the U.S. U-19 team in 2002-03. Sam Carpenter currently is a Senior Assistant Director in the Office of Admissions at Duke.

>> DUKE SCORING BY QUARTER

Cemented as one of the top coaches in college lacrosse, John Danowski has led the Duke men’s lacrosse team to unprecedented success and himself to the top of the Division I men’s lacrosse wins list. Danowski was introduced as Duke’s eighth head men’s lacrosse coach on July 21, 2006, and quickly led the Blue Devils to some of the most successful lacrosse seasons in school history and ultimately to three NCAA Championships in five seasons.

In Danowski’s 14 years at the helm of the Blue Devils lacrosse program, he has compiled an impressive 207-62 record in leading Duke to seven ACC regular season titles and four ACC tournament titles, 10 appearances in the NCAA semifinals, including eight straight from 2007-14, five in the NCAA title match and ultimately to the 2010, 2013 and 2014 national titles. The 2014 NCAA crown put Danowski, a winner of a record 412

career games, among a small group of nine coaches to win three national titles and among eight to capture consecutive crowns. Meanwhile, Duke’s run of eight straight NCAA semifinals rank as the second most of any program since 2000 with Syracuse. In 2019, Danowski became the first Division I lacrosse coach and only the third across all three divisions to amass 400 career wins when duke beat Furman 17-9 to start the 2019 campaign. He currently stands at 412-199 in his 37 seasons of coaching.

A winner of nearly 80 percent of his games at Duke, the individual awards Blue Devil players have garnered is equally impressive. In 13 seasons, Danowski mentored 78 All-America selections, 49 All-ACC choices, two Tewaaraton Trophy winners, a pair of USILA Attackman of the Year honorees, a USILA Defenseman of the Year, three USILA Midfielder of the Year award recipients and 24 USILA Scholar All-America picks.

While the success on the field is unsurpassed in Duke lacrosse history, the student-athletes excellence in the classroom also is unrivaled. The Blue Devils consistently lead the ACC in All-ACC Academic picks as well as players on the ACC Academic Honor Roll. In 2019, Duke had 39 players – over 80 percent of the team – achieve a 3.0 grade point average for the entire academic year.
