principals’s message

elcome to the f i rst edition of The Beacon.

Being a new publication for our school, it intends to share ideas and information about our Christian school not only with member families, but also with all interested families in the central Lambton community.

John Knox Christian School began in Wyoming in 1958; after 55 years, people still ask "Why a Christian School?" Families who support the school are a t t racted to the ty pe o f

education offered at a Christian school. A school like John Knox Christian invigorates its educational program with the time-tested values, guidelines, and ideas of the Christian faith. Those qualities are part of the who le cur r i cu lum. They challenge students to think differently about the world and their place in it. Our goal encourages students to grow academica l l y and a l so to develop socially, psychologically and spiritually. Our hope and

prayer is that our students, as they mature, become strong Christian citizens who honour God and live in service to their community.

VolleyballOn November 30th, we were able to attend the first ever Bluewater District Christian School Volleyball Tournament. Our Wyoming Warriors were given a chance to compete against different Christian schools of a similar size. Our girls managed a win on the day and our boys f in i shed runners-up in a nail-biting three set final. Many thanks to our drivers and a special thank you to our coaches, Murray and Deborah!

BasketballOur basketball teams have been practising for the past month. Mrs . Tetreau l t i s molding the girls' team into a competitive unit on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; while Mr. E i sen i s up to the challenge of turning the boys in to dr ibb le r s , pa s ser s , blockers, and shooters on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The tournament is tentatively set for January 28th or 29th in London.

Highlights

special focus

Now in its third year, the Barton Spelling and Reading programme has emerged as a key resource in supporting students who struggle with language. The Barton system, founded on well-established research into reading difficulties, has proven effective for young students as well as adults. Students work one-on-one with an tutor in our resource room. Lydia Sipkens, the Barton tutor notes, "One of the major benefits of the program is the way the English language is broken down into simple rules that students can understand, memorize, and apply to their reading and writing." Classroom teachers have noticed a marked improvement in reading fluency and especially a growing confidence in the students' writing.

Barton Programme

Literacy is a prime concern of every school. It's been a tradition at John Knox to set time aside for personal reading as well as reading with a partner for the winter months. We team up older students with younger ones; they find their special reading corner somewhere in the school and share books for 15 - 20 minutes or so. Not only does it provide encouragement for reading, it also creates important school community bonds among students of different ages.

Reading Partners

On Thursday, February 21, John Knox is hosting its biennial history fair. Students in grades 5 - 8 are busy preparing interesting displays on Canadian history. You can expect a variety of topics covering people who were inventors and businessman and events such as building the CPR and discovery of oil in Lambton County. A special feature will be a War of 1812 display which includes a large floor map. The history fair is open to all who wish to attend; doors will open for viewing at 7:30. Refreshments and snacks will be available.

Ever y year our s tudents participate in the Remembrance Day Ar t and L i te ra r y Competition, sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion. It's the participation that is important as students have opportunity to learn about peace and war in Canada's past and present. They learn and reflect about sacrifice. A number of students received recognition from the Legion in the form of awards. We appreciate their work.

Special EventsStudents always have talents and gifts that may not readily show up in a classroom (or at home!). We gave students an audience and a chance to develop their talents. On Friday, November 23, a large crowd of parents, siblings, g randparents , f r iends , and neighbours filled our gym. They listened to clever recitations and s tudent-wri t ten speeches , watched juggling acts, skits, gymnastic routines, and heard a variety of music.

Time for Talents

It's a tradition that we invite parents and friends to our annual Christmas chapel. This year, a standing-room only crowd joined the s tudents in honour ing Christ, the greatest gift. All students participated. Each class gave a musical offering or a choral reading.

Handbells and tone chime choirs filled the gym with those special moments Christmas can bring. Our school music group, Ignite, participated as well. The closing number, "Children of the Risen King", featured all the students and left the audiences with a song in their heart.

During the month of December, the JK and SK students took an exciting “trip” around the world to learn about different Christmas traditions.

Suitcases were packed and passports processed before leaving for Germany and beyond. We discovered that many of the common Christmas traditions that we practice today have originated in other lands. Students en joyed making Christmas crafts and munching on traditional Christmas treats.

Upon return to Canada, we visited (for real!) the Moore Museum to learn how Canadians celebrated Christmas long ago.

But no matter the country, we saw that people everywhere rejoice in the greatest Christmas gift of all, Jesus!
